† ALLERDING Cynthia Sue Allerding, age 70, of Ionia, passed away on Friday, February
9, 2024. She was born on August 5, 1953, in Hastings. Cindy enjoyed crocheting, bird watching, crosswords and indoor gardening. She loved to be by the water. She was a hard worker with a kind heart and calm spirit. Cindy had immense love for her children and grandchildren. She welcomed all in as family, many called her mom. She is survived by her loving, lifelong companion Gaylord Mason, her children, Richard (Stacy) Dashkovitz III of Ionia, Walter Dashkovitz Jr. of Muir, Gaylord (Helene) Mason II of Ionia and Sara (Jeff) Shaver of Florida; sisters, Mary Worthington and Kathy Decker; brother-in-law, Richard Eliason; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Cindy was preceded in death by her father, Carl Allerding, her mother, Ruth Ann Bartholomew Allerding, her brother, Jerry Allerding and sister, JoAnn Allerding. She is deeply missed by all her family and friends. Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life is scheduled for August 4 with more details to be provided later. † SHINDORF Treva Arlene (McQueen) Shindorf, of Ionia, passed away surrounded by her family on February 10, 2024 at the age of 92. She was born in Lansing on March 8, 1931, the daughter of Clarence V. and Bessie M. (McKnight) McQueen. Treva led a life filled with simple joys and profound love. She found delight in the simple pleasures of birdwatching and traveling. Treva was an astounding cook, she made many delicious dishes, including her famous potato salad. Above all, Treva’s heart belonged to her family. As a devoted homemaker, she poured her love and dedication into creating a warm home where her loved ones could always find comfort. Preceding Treva in death are her parents, Clarence and Bessie McQueen; beloved husband of 36 years, Henry Starr Shindorf; daughter, Katherine Louise Ledin; son, Raymon Earl Geister; son, James Shindorf; and 10 siblings. Surviving Treva are her children, Michael (Dee) Geister of Belding, Mary (Dale) Allen of Belding, Andrew (Jeanine Reeder) Geister of Ionia, and Brenda (Dennis) Heath of Tyre, Lebanon; son-in-law, Steve Ledin of Ionia; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; brother, C.J. (Bonnie) McQueen of Belding; and sister, Virginia Arnold. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Rob Lawrence and Pastor Darren Signs at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be at Easton Township Cemetery. meals continue to be filling and tasty. This recipe for “Herby Rice and Black Bean Salsa Burrito Bowl” from Niki Webster’s “Rainbow Bowls” (Sourcebooks) is full of protein-rich beans, flavorful herbed rice and satisfying avocado. It can be enjoyed as a quick and easy, meatless lunch or dinner.
HERBY RICE AND BLACK BEAN SALSA BURRITO BOWL Serves 2
100 grams 1
Splash of olive oil sugar snap peas avocado, flesh sliced
FOR THE RICE: 2 TBSP extra virgin olive oil 250 grams cooked basmati rice Juice of ½ lime 1 tsp maple syrup 40 grams fresh herbs, such as coriander, flat-leaf parsely, mint and/or dill, chopped Sea salt and black pepper FOR THE BLACK BEAN SALSA: 240 grams canned black beans, drained and rinsed 2 TBSP sun-dried tomato paste 100 grams cherry tomatoes, chopped Juice of ½ lime 4 TBSP fresh mint, shredded ½ tsp sea salt flakes Pinch of chili flakes
To make the rice, add 1 tablespoon of the oil to a frying pan with the cooked rice, lime juice and maple syrup. Fry for 1 to 2 minutes on a medium heat, then add the fresh herbs. Add the remaining tablespoon of oil and season with salt and pepper. Set aside and keep warm. Set a small frying pan or griddle pan on a medium heat. Add a splash of olive oil and the sugar snaps and fry for 2 to 3 minutes until a little charred. To make the black bean salsa, add all the ingredients to a bowl and stir to combine. To serve, load two bowls with the rice mixture, black bean salsa, sugar snaps, and sliced avocado. TF2426967.

Foods that can keep cholesterol in check Diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy cholesterol numbers. Although the level of cholesterol in a person’s blood is partly due to factors related to heredity, the foods one eats also affect cholesterol levels. When doctors discuss cholesterol with their patients, they may refer to total cholesterol, bad cholesterol and good cholesterol. What does that mean? Total cholesterol is the combined number of cholesterol in the blood, and should be below 200. Good cholesterol is known as HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and ideally it should be above 60. Bad, or LDL (lowdensity lipoprotein) cholesterol, should be below 100, says the Cleveland Clinic. A person who has a poor lipoprotein profile may be instructed to alter their diet. Learning which foods might help is an important tool in managing cholesterol and triglyceride numbers. OATS AND MORE Individuals likely have heard that oatmeal is good for helping reduce cholesterol numbers. Oatmeal has soluble fiber, which lowers LDL cholesterol by reducing the absorption of cholesterol into the bloodstream. Oat bran and other high-fiber grains also are good to enjoy. LEGUMES AND PRODUCE Eggplant, okra, kidney beans, Brussels sprouts, pears, apples, and more also can be effective at lowering cholesterol levels. These foods tend to be lower in calories and saturated fats but high in soluble fiber.
NUTS Almond, walnuts and other foods high in omega-3 fatty acids can lower cholesterol levels by raising the levels of HDL cholesterol. Nuts like almonds also are high in vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can keep the body healthy in a number of ways. Since nuts are high in calories, it is important to eat them in moderation. FATTY FISH Eating fish over other meat-based protein sources helps reduce caloric intake. It also means the body gains the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids that lower LDL and triglycerides in the bloodstream. STEROLS AND STANOLS Sterols and stanols are components of plants that gum up the body’s ability to absorb cholesterol from food, says Harvard Health. Companies add them to foods like margarine and granola bars as supplements. Roughly two grams of plant sterols a day can reduce LDL by 10 percent. AVOCADOS AND OLIVES Both of these foods are good sources of fiber and also monounsaturated fats that can help improve HDL and lower LDL levels. Substitute olive and avocado oils for lard and butter when cooking to improve cholesterol levels. Certain foods can be beneficial for improving cholesterol numbers. Focusing on the positive can help people feel less restricted by healthy eating plans. TF239290
