LANSING, MI – February is Heart Health Month and Sparrow is sponsoring several local events to promote cardiac care and keep everyone in the Mid-Michigan region informed about healthy habits. Did you know that one in four people die of heart disease every year or that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women and that 735,000 Americans have a heart attack every year. Knowing your risk starts with knowing your numbers and making the right lifestyle choices, including proper diet, physical activity, and abstaining from smoking. Free heart health screenings will be held throughout the month at Sparrow Hospital and our Community Hospitals. In as little as 15 minutes, participants will learn about their cholesterol and blood pressure from a Sparrow Nurse. No appointment is necessary and parking is complimentary. The screenings will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations: •Tuesday, Feb. 11: Sparrow Carson Hospital, Conference Room B, 406 E. Elm Street, Carson City

•Thursday, Feb. 13: AL!VE, 800 E. Lawrence Avenue, Charlotte •Tuesday, Feb. 18: Sparrow Ionia Hospital, 2nd floor conference room, 3665 S. State Road, Ionia Here are other events happening at Sparrow throughout the month: •Thursday, Feb. 13: Sparrow Eaton Hospital hosts its seventh annual interactive, educational Heart Health Event at AL!VE. There will be a free Lunch and Learn presentation, with a heart healthy lunch starting at 11:30 a.m., followed by a presentation by experts from Sparrow Eaton’s Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Lunch is included for all who pre-register by Monday, Feb. 10, by calling 517.541.5800, option 1. •Thursday, Feb. 13: Sparrow Ionia Hospital hosts a Lunch and Learn session on AFIB and stroke, presented by Aimee Seaman, FNP, Sparrow TCI. The free session will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the second floor conference room at Sparrow Ionia, 3565 S. State Road, Ionia. Call to reserve a spot at 616.523.1356.

Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to show the ones you love just how much you care about them. This is achieved through various gestures, including giving heartfelt gifts. Research from Business Insider found that 51 percent of Americans now celebrate Valentine’s Day. While a recent poll from Insights West found that although many Canadians view Valentine’s Day as overly commercial, 75 percent still plan on celebrating it. People are still spending big bucks on making Valentine’s Day special. The National Retail Federation indicates Americans spent more than $20.7 billion on the holiday in 2019 and forecasters predict similar spending in 2020. Every Valentine’s Day, certain gifts emerge as the most popular. While certain gifts are common, there are ways to make them seem fresh and exciting. Here are some ideas for Valentine’s Day gifting.

FLOWERS

The National Retail Federation estimates that people spend around $2 billion on flowers for gifts. While roses are much sought after, thinking outside the bouquet can produce unique results. Choose different blooms, perhaps a loved one’s favorite flower or something regional. Potted plants also will last longer than cut flowers, giving them more staying power. Skip bouquets in favor of table centerpieces, which can be eye-catching.

Gifting jewelry can be tricky because it is such a personal gift that must tie into a sweetheart’s style. It may be tempting to go with something large and flashy or full of diamonds, but a better option is to take inventory of what your loved one wears on a daily basis and try to mimic the size and scope in your gift. Other thoughtful jewelry gifts include understated pendant necklaces or bracelets engraved with key dates or the names of their children. Colored gemstones in lieu of diamonds also may be a striking choice.

Federation. A box of chocolates certainly can fit the bill, but other options abound. Perhaps a sweetheart has a favorite candy that recalls his or her childhood or prefers a chocolate maker from his or her hometown. Purchase those items to add a bit of nostalgia. Make the holiday magical by setting up a candy bar right at home, where your sweetheart can pick and choose from candies displayed in eye-catching bowls and canisters. Another novel idea is to CHOCOLATES AND use candy molds to make your own sweet treats. CANDY Roughly $1.8 billion is spent Thoughtful Valentine’s Day on candy each Valentine’s gifts can make the day even Day, says the National Retail more special for sweethearts. Dinner and a movie is a classic date night, but on Valentine’s Day restaurants and theaters may be overcrowded and only offer limited menus. An alternative can be to arrange for a gourmet meal to be delivered and wrap up a new streaming movie/TV device already primed with a subscription to his or her favorite streaming service. Then all you need to do is snuggle on the sofa for a romantic night in.

How to incorporate more heart-healthy foods into your diet Diet and heart health go hand in hand. The American Heart Association notes that a healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons to fight cardiovascular diseases, which the World Health Organization says kill more people across the globe each year than any other disease. Men and women do not need degrees in nutrition science to create hearthealthy diets for them-

selves and their families. In fact, the familiar calls to “eat your fruits and vegetables” many adults recall from childhood lessons or nights around the family dinner table still bear weight today. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables is a hallmark of a healthy lifestyle. And supplementing such a diet with other heart-healthy foods is a great way to reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that fruits and vegetables are healthy whether they’re fresh, frozen, canned, and/or dried. The AHA advises eating fruits and vegetables with every meal and snack, and that may require a little creativity as you sneak them into favorite dishes. For example, the AHA suggests replacing half the ground meat in recipes for burgers, meatloaf or meatballs with cooked chopped mushrooms. The mushrooms can be finely chopped with a knife or food processor, and then sautéed in some olive oil until they’re soft. They can then be mixed in with the lean meat, and the meal can be cooked as it normally would. At the breakfast table, add fruit to a bowl of cereal to make for a more flavorful morning meal.

cheese. You can even add fruit or vegetables to such snacks to make snack time even more heart-healthy.

PROTEINS

Healthy proteins are another way people can promote heart health with their daily diets. When choosing proteins at the grocery store, the AHA recommends choosing chicken and fish over red meats. That’s because red meats, which include beef and lamb, have more saturated fat than chicken and fish. Saturated fats increase blood cholesterol levels and can worsen heart disease, while the unsaturated fats in fish like salmon can actually reduce the risk for cardiovascular issues like heart failure and ischemic stroke. When preparing poultry, remove the skin, as most of the saturated fat in poultry is found just beneath the skin.

GRAINS

When buying grains, the DHHS recommends reading the ingredients list on the package before purchasing. Make sure whole wheat or another whole grain is the first item listed in the ingredients list, and choose only those products that say 100

The Ionia County Health Department (ICHD) invites you to join us in celebrating National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM), and the 75th anniversary of Community Water Fluoridation. NCDHM is intended to bring increased awareness of the importance of regular dental check-ups and a healthy oral hygiene routine. Part of a healthy oral hygiene routine may include drinking water with added fluoride. For 75 years, children in the United States have been drinking water with added fluoride and enjoying the benefits of better dental health. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 5 children aged five to eleven years have at least one untreated decayed tooth. Children with untreated tooth decay may develop pain and infections that could lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning. The good news is that tooth decay is preventable! Community water fluoridation has been keeping children’s teeth strong, and reducing cavities by about 25% in children and adults. By preventing cavities, community water fluoridation saves money both for families and for the US health care system. If children are not served by a community water system that provides them with the adequate amount of fluoride, there are other ways to achieve a healthy smile, such as: • Starting an oral hygiene

routine early! Parents should brush their child’s teeth when they begin to come in. Children should have their first dental visit by the age of one. • Brushing regularly. Parents should help their child brush twice a day for 2 minutes each time. As soon as the first tooth comes in, brushing should start. • Drinking fluoridated water. Community water supplies (CWS) may contain enough fluoride to protect your child’s teeth. Contact your local municipality to determine if your community water supply is fluoridated or visit nccd. cdc.gov/DOH_MWF/Default/ Default.aspx. If you have well water, or live in a community without fluoridated water, consider buying bottled water with fluoride added. • Serving nutritious snacks and limiting sweets to mealtimes. Avoid filling bottles with liquids such as sugar water, juice, or soft drinks. Routine dental services may be covered if your child is enrolled in a Medicaid plan such as Healthy Kids, Healthy Kids Dental, or MIChild. My Community Dental Centers, on behalf of ICHD, focuses on providing dental services to Medicaid enrollees and low-income, uninsured residents throughout Ionia County. For more information on MCDC services or to schedule an appointment, please call 1-877-313-6232. For more information regarding Medicaid enrollment contact the Ionia County Health Department at (616) 572-5341.
