The Wing and Renucci Families would like to say a special
Thank You...
Last Saturday was one of the most amazing days we have seen in a long time and we want to reach out and tell everyone thank you so much for coming to Julie’s celebration of life. The Family, Friends, MDOC family and the Community rallied around us to just prove how much Julie meant to them, this community and this world. The Celebration was heartwarming and astonishing. Also a special thank you to The Eagles and The American Legion, and Friends of Sidney Bar for all there help and donations for Julie’s Celebration of Life. Also, to lonia Moose 998, for the hospitality, the service, the food and to all the helpers, we could not have done it without you.

– OBITUARIES –
† ADAIR Kenneth Dean Adair age 79 of Ionia passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of January 25, 2024. He was born August 18, 1944, in Ionia, Michigan to Max and Mildred (Krause) Adair. At 17 years old, Ken joined the United States Army and proudly served his country from 1962-1968. He was stationed in Germany. Ken worked at TRW in Portland, Michigan for nearly 35 years in a variety of roles including crane operator - one of many skills and trades he learned while in the U.S. Army. Upon retirement he enjoyed many activities, including doing home renovation projects -- famous for saying “trim will cover it” as a solution -fishing, hunting, woodworking, small engine repair, and just tinkering in the garage. And he was always on the hunt for his next “treasure” at local yard sales. Ken was known for his witty sense of humor, stubbornness, long prayers, and willingness to help anyone in need. Church, faith and love of God played an important part of Ken’s life. Many dear friendships were formed - and have remained strong to this day -- while attending Lyons Baptist Church, Temple Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Sebewa. Over the years, Ken served as deacon and worked as Awana and youth group leaders. He was a Godly husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend to so many. Ken is survived by his wife of 56 years, Esther, and 3 children and their spouses: James and Melissa (Adair) Wright, Christopher and Michelle Adair, Jerry and Kim (Adair) Owsinski. His sister: Mary Lindsley. And his 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, five brothers and one sister. Funeral services was at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 12 p.m. with Pastor Greg Mattson officiating. Visitation was on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Dad’s memory. Donations and online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com † CHRISTOPHER The Lord looked at the current situation on Earth and decided this emergency required one of the most experienced and capable volunteers available. He called on Margaret (Peg) Christopher. Never one to turn down a challenge or a new position, she rose to the occasion and joined him in heaven on January 13th, 2024. He knew she was highly qualified because she had easily been an officer and president for nearly every organization to which she belonged. She had a B.S. from Central Michigan University and a Masters in Music Education from the University of Wisconsin. She taught music in Ionia, Belding and Lakewood for over 40 years. Now she will gloriously shine as she directs a choir of angels. The Lord needs a leader and positive communicator with passion, energy, confidence and faith. Peg is his gal! Her devotions, newsletters and creative presentations are legendary amongst her various organizations, including: The First United Methodist Church, the Ionia Association of Retired School Personnel, Advocates of Sparrow Hospital and the WCD MAHA, Beta Sigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Women’s Festival Committee, The Literary Society and not least, the 438th Troop Carrier Group WWII. Of course, the Lord knows that even heaven can use a boost from an ever prepared lifetime Girl Scout. Peg can lead the angels in grand march style, just as she did by founding the Dad Daughter Date Night, a popular event that danced on for decades. Many local residents will recall her as director and leader of all things musical and campy at the Girl Scout Little House Day Camp each summer. I’m sure she’ll be leading them all on a wonderful imaginary bear hunt in paradise. The Lord can rest assured that Peg knows how to entertain. Her beautiful displays at the many Festival of Tables each year may even rival Leonardo da Vinci’s portrayal of the Last Supper. Peg knew lasting love, the first fifty-three years of marriage to Fred Christopher, and another ten years of romance and marriage with Donald Fell, both who are waiting in heaven for her with open arms. Yes, she did have a thing for those military men. Peg had been born at home in Drayton Plains, MI on September 22, 1925, and was the oldest of eight children. Her baby brother, Frank Blue and sister, Ruth Chase will miss her dearly. She also leaves two daughters, Linda (David) May and Sharon (Jack) Unger, here on earth to continue living the adventure. Her other daughter, Patricia, will greet her on the other side and surely be drafted into helping with her new heavenly volunteer roles. Lucky her! Since Peg is no longer able to volunteer here on earth and make her regular charitable donations, she would love for others to make donations in her memory. You could make a donation to Baycliff Health Camp online at baycliff.org, or to the Ionia Ministerial Association directly through Adam Rewa at the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 434 High St, Ionia, MI. 48846. As Peg departed unexpectedly during a deep freeze and blizzardgeddon, a celebration of life service will be held at Lehman Funeral Home when the weather is much warmer. Advance notice will be published when the date is determined. Please be advised, we will reveal her secret holiday cheese ball recipe at the service. If you’d like to share a story or photographs, please visit her obituary memory wall at lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
Thank You There are not enough words to express our gratitude for the many cards, giving of Gideon Bibles, plants, food that was brought in for the memorial luncheon, gifts and the love and support shown to our families.

† SHIER Carol Jean Shier, 88 years old, of Ionia, Michigan, passed away peacefully in her home on the early morning of January 16, 2024. Born Carol Jean MacKinnon on July 2, 1935, in Birmingham, Mi. to Cecil and Leona “Grace” MacKinnon. Carol graduated from Cedar Springs High School in 1953 and went on to study Airline Stewardess training in Minnesota. After completion, she moved back to Cedar Springs where she met the love of her life. She married Donald “Pete” Shier on March 1, 1956. They relocated to Ionia in 1959 and purchased their family home on North St. Carol was deeply involved in her community. She created the “North Street Neighborhood Club” and was the Troop Leader for the local Girl Scouts. Carol was known for her fun sense of style and colorful fashion choices. Her style transcended into her crocheting and sewing. To receive a handmade gift from Carol, was to receive pure love. She always put such thought into everything she made. Her grandchildren knew her as a gifted storyteller. She created many traditions that her grandchildren now pass on to their own children. Whether that be the “Good Morning” song or a proper Tea Party to celebrate the holidays. Carol was a devoted woman of faith. She was an active member of her Presbyterian Church and Christian Service Center. In her retirement, she could be found at the card table with friends and family, where she vowed to always return home victorious. Her competitive nature was passed down through her family. She would attend a multitude of sporting events for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her daughter born to Heaven, Cindy Shier. Her parents Cecil and Leona “Grace” MacKinnon. Her Husband Donald “Pete” Shier. Her siblings William and James MacKinnon and Marjory Covell. She is survived by her 4 daughters: Terri (Patrick) Peterson, Laurie (Kim) Patrick, Quinn (Pete) Meade, and Shalyn Ralston. Her 9 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM, Saturday, January 20, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church,125 E Main St, Ionia, MI 48846 with Dr. Christopher Dorn officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church. Arrangements cared for by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church in Carol’s name. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com. † WITTENBACH Carl Dean Wittenbach
May 16th 1951 - December 30th, 2023 After a long battle of illnesses, Dean left to be with his Lord. He was raised on the family farm outside of Lowell. He served in the US Army and completed a tour in Vietnam. Through the journeys of his life he became a jack of all trades, master of none, who eventually would retire from Mid-Michigan Livestock Services in Ovid. Dean was a bit of a renaissance man with a vast array of interests. He enjoyed the fruits of the land and shared his opinions with those who would listen (and many that preferred not to). A non-conforming philosopher of life who lived on his own terms, wandering for many years until he found his place amongst “the great cosmic wonderfulness”. Dean will be sadly missed by the family he left behind: wife Julie Fox, their children and grandchildren. Daughter Tricia Wittenbach of Clarksville; her children Jaede and Easton Stank. Daughter Faith (Don) Wailes of Strasburg, Colorado; her children Abram and Elizabeth (Libby). Son Zachariah (Jessica) Wittenbach of Orleans; his children Drake, Leonidas and Victoria. Son Jeremiah (Tiffinie) Wittenbach of Ionia; his children Miah, Jaxson, Harper and Rowan. Adopted Son Andrew Woodrow (Kari Brooke) of Ovid; his son Maxson. Siblings; Chris (Gail) Wittenbach of Clinton, Joe (Deb) Wittenbach of Muir, Pat (Terri) Wittenbach of Ionia, James (Justin) Wittenbach of Fairborn, Ohio, Kim (Karla) Wittenbach of Portland and Anne (Scott) Swinehart of Ionia. In-Law’s include Shelley Obery of Ionia, Carolyn Fox of Ionia, Merlin (Donna) Fox of Belding, Bryan Fox of Muir, Carlene (Carl) Fox of Saranac, Deanna (Brian) Foco of Ionia, Stephanie (Michael) Morey of DeWitt, Helena (Steve) Hoover of Brighton and Matthew Fox of Ionia. He also leaves the dear friend and neighbor lady Diane Smith of Ionia as well as several nieces and nephews. Dean will be reunited with his parents; George and Barb Wittenbach, siblings; Steve and his wife Karen Wittenbach, Jan Wittenbach and Paula Wittenbach, In-Laws; Merlin and Diane Fox, nephews; Bart Wittenbach, Brent Foco, Bryan Dolley ,and Gordon Dolley, and close friend Michael Butler. Dean always said the new year did not start until the spring when everything was new and refreshed. Per his wishes, join us in the spring for a celebration of his life. Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Belding is serving his family.
† YAW Edward Lewis Yaw, 61, of Lyons, Michigan, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2024 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Edward was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He had a special bond with his “QB” Pamela Ferris, who was the love of his life. Edward had a knack for fixing almost anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He had a vibrant personality and was known as the life of the party. Edward also found great joy in working in his shop. Edward is survived by his children, Charles Koewers (Becca), Danielle Harrington (Tony), Jessica Troutt (Justin), and Christopher Yaw (Peggy). Grandkids Andon and Olivia Harrington, Aaron Isaac, and Ethan Koewers, and Benjamin Yaw. He is also survived by his siblings, Thomas Shong, Dennis (May) Shong, David Shong, David Yaw, Julia Edwards, and Susan Day-Greenhoe. He also has 2 bonus grandkids and 5 great grandkids. He has many special cousins, nieces and nephews. Edward was preceded in death by his father, Edgar Adelbert (Dell) Yaw, and his mother, Norma Louise Yaw. A celebration of Edward’s life will be held at a future date. Please remember him as he was.

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT Boston-Saranac Historical Society
MIDGET THEATRE – heard of it? How about “Cinema 44?” OK, I admit both are rather obscure picture house names. How about “Saranac Theatre” – “Your Friendly theatre in a Friendly town.” Still not ringing any bells I bet, unless you were living in or around our village back the days of WWII, through to the 1960’s. Yes, that is right. Saranac had its own movie theatre back in the day (as they say). The principal theatre building is no longer standing as it now the home of the “Saranac Village Office.” However, when it first opened as a movie house November 4th, 1944, it was heralded as “…modern in every way. The theatre has perfect sound reproduction thru the medium of acoustically treated walls. The room is modernly air-conditioned with a thermostatically controlled heating and cooling system. This system gives a complete change of fresh air every five minutes. The air is strained and filtered and is completely free of dust. The floor is elevated for perfect vision of the screen and modern projection equipment has been installed.” Seating capacity? 325. And who did Saranac have to thank for this mid-century modern gem? Wayne Stebbins. In 1939, at the age of 14, Wayne started working as a ticket taker and usher at the “Midget Theatre” in Saranac,
which was owned at that time by Clarence Moore, of Grand Rapids. The “Midget” was in the north room of the “Advertiser” block. By 1940, Wayne was the projectionist and soon to be the sole owner of the theatre, with a Warner Bros. contract under his belt. Think of it – he is now 15 years old. The year after he graduated (class of 1943) from Saranac High School, he was praised as the youngest business man in Saranac, and the theatre was running movies seven nights a week with a Sunday afternoon matinee. Oftentimes, as on October 6th, 1950, there would be a double feature: such as “Davy Crockett, Indian Scout” (1950 western/adventure) and “Abbot and Costello: Meet the killer, Boris Karloff” (1949 horror/comedy). Then, to draw you back in following weeks, the serial short movie: “No. 15 – Adventures of Sir Galahad”. Oftentimes there would be a newsreel produced by “Pathe News” or “Paramount News.” By the mid-1960’s, the arrival of television in most people’s homes was taking a toll on the movie theatre business and the “Saranac Theatre” closed its doors in 1964.
This did not stop Wayne Stebbins from showing movies. He set up “Cinema 44” in his home on Vosper Street. By special invitation, a dozen or so Saranac residents would periodically be welcomed. Showbills listing the featured films were circulated in advance. Popcorn, snack candy and soda pop would be available, and oftentimes you would be ushered to your seat by his “house cat.” On one such (later) showbill, it was stated “Over 32,000 people have enjoyed movies at Cinema 44.” Not bad for a Saranac hometown boy, Wayne Stebbins (1925-2009), whose first movie theatre was in his backyard with a sheet hung over some bushes. Admission price? Two safety pins. (How else would he pin the sheets together?) NOTE: this article’s content was gleaned from Wayne’s scrapbook – a copy of which is held in the Depot Museum amongst the other donated diaries, scrapbooks and collections donated to BSHS since 1985. Follow us on Facebook ™ / Saranac Depot or check with the Saranac-Clarksville library for BSHS events: www.saraclark. michlibrary.org/community-calendar#/events/
