Secretary of State Ruth Johnson, law enforcement promote organ, tissue and eye donation

In honor of fallen Wayne State University police officer Collin Rose, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson joined local law enforcement in Southeast Michigan on Tuesday to promote organ and tissue donation. “Sgt. Rose was a man who gave easily of himself to others, so it is no surprise that his final wish was to give of himself through the gift of life,” Johnson said. “I am so proud of our new partnership with his brothers and sisters in law enforcement to remember his legacy and help others through organ and tissue donation.” Sgt. Rose was killed in the line of duty in November 2016 and his family supported his decision as a registered organ and tissue donor to give the gift of life to others. Because of his generosity, many lives were improved. “With the support of our branch office staff, we have made great strides since I was elected to increase the number of registered donors,” Johnson said. “Michigan has actually gone from one of the worst states in the nation to one of the best states for organ donor registration.” In 2011, when Johnson became Secretary of State, only 27 percent of Michigan residents were registered as organ donors. Today, under her leadership, that number has climbed to over 62 percent. “Those numbers represent hope to real people,” Johnson said. “There are over 3,300 people in Michigan right now whose families are waiting for that life-saving phone call.” Those interested in learning more or registering as an organ and tissue donor can visit http://www.michigan.gov/sos and click on “Organ Donation."

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson today announced that her office has issued a cease and desist order against a previously suspended Grand Rapids repair shop owner for operating an unregistered facility. Secretary of State regulation staff recently conducted an inspection of Guevara Brothers Auto Repair, 1838 Division Ave. S., owned by Florentino Guevara. The visit was prompted by concerns over potential city code and zoning violations. Investigators discovered automotive repairs being performed despite the lack of a facility registration and mechanic certification. The cease and desist order was issued Jan. 31. Guevara previously owned Guevara Auto Repair, 1601 Blaine Ave. S.E., which had its registration summarily suspended in June 2014 for failure to make records available on multiple occasions. The registration was subsequently revoked in February 2016 after an administrative hearing. Consumers who have a complaint against Guevara Brothers Auto Repair are encouraged to call the Office of Investigative Services Automotive Complaint Line at 517-335-1410. Under Michigan law, customers are entitled to recover money paid to an unregistered facility for repairs. “Repair facilities must comply with the law,” Johnson said. “If they do not, we will take action to bring them into compliance to protect consumers.” Johnson encourages consumers to always verify the repair shop they are using is registered with the state and licensed to perform the type of automotive work they need done. As part of her focus on strengthening her office’s consumer protection efforts, Johnson created the Office of Investigative Services, which investigates and inspects automotive-related businesses. The cease and desist order prohibits Guevara from performing any further automotive repairs until he complies with state law. Under the law, any person who knowingly provides automotive repair services without a registration or certificate is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

Secretary of State Ruth Johnson stresses the importance of women in leadership roles Speaking at the Michigan Parks & Rec conference, she states, "We’re 51 percent of the population but only 23 percent of the state Legislature." Secretary of State Ruth Johnson today spoke to women professionals at the Michigan Parks and Recreation Association annual conference and trade show in Detroit, stressing the need for greater involvement of women in business and government. “Metro Detroit has the second highest percentage of women business owners in the country,” Johnson said. “That’s one powerful alliance of leadership, talent and energy. But to make a difference, our voices need to be heard.” Johnson stressed the need for women that have integrity and a passion to get things done to network, form alliances with like-minded people, seek out allies in power and use the clout of the “grassroots” and social media to communicate. She maintained that the most productive workforces equally use the talents of women and men. “As women, we have an important story to tell,” Johnson said. “We can leverage our experiences and make a real difference in the world.”

DAISY Award winner at Sparrow Carson Hospital exemplifies definition of an extraordinary Nurse

Celebrating Sparrow Carson Hospital’s first DAISY Award of 2018 are Mary McClain, RN, Nurse Educator; Julie Noreen, RN, Emergency Department Nurse and winner of the DAISY Award; Sara Hagerman, RN, Emergency Department Manager; and Barb McQuillan, Sparrow Carson Hospital Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer.

CARSON CITY, MI – Julie Noreen, RN, of the Sparrow Carson Hospital Emergency Department, has been recognized as the hospital’s first DAISY Award winner of 2018, symbolizing extraordinary Nursing care. Noreen was nominated because of the compassion she showed to a critical Patient rushed to the Sparrow Carson Emergency Department along with several others after a tragic accident. That morning, Noreen and another Caregiver were the lead staff members and ensured extra Emergency staff were called to receive other critical Patients. Noreen comforted the Patient, a mother of seven who had several children involved in the accident. “At this young mother’s time of need, Julie was an extraordinary person who not only helped save her life but also gave her hope,” Noreen’s nomination letter said. “There are so many extraordinary things that Nurses do to physically help Patients, [her] act of compassion and empathy is the heart and art of nursing.” Congratulations to Noreen, who represents the extraordinary qualities that help Sparrow Carson Hospital provide quality, compassionate care to everyone, every time. The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP) at age 33. DAISY is an acronym that stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. During Pat’s eight-week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his Nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. The Foundation was created in Pat’s memory to recognize extraordinary Nurses for the enormous difference they make in the lives of their Patients every day. CHOOSE WISELY. CHOOSE SPARROW.
