† COOK A gentle life and beautiful spirit, Blanche (Feyan)

Cook, has went to be with God on January 26, 2021. Her life was one that took little, but gave so much. She was devoted to faith and family. Blanche was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pewamo. She was proud of her Irish Heritage, but was most proud of her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren.

Preceding Blanche in death are her parents, James and Catherine Feyan; beloved husband of 52 years, Norman Cook; daughter, Christine Thelen; grandson, Nicholas Risher; brother, Bob Feyan; and several members of the Cook Family. Left to cherish her memories are her son and caregiver, Larry Cook; daughters, Kathy Risher and Colleen Cook; son, Don Cook; son-in-law, Dan (Nancy) Thelen; grandchildren, Nicki (Darrin) Willson, Renee Martin, Alexandra (Alex) Risher-Contreras, and B. Murphy Patterson; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Avery, and Lydia Willson, Alex and Zoe Martin, and Arlo Contreras; brother, Ray Feyan; and several members of the Cook Family.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Sparrow Carson City – Cardiac Step-Down Unit and Blanche’s friends and neighbors for the wonderful care and compassion they showed her.

† DAVIS Harold James “Jim” Davis Jr. age 75 of Ionia passed away January 14, 2020. He was born March 9, 1945 in Ionia, Michigan the son of Harold J. and Rita (Cameron) Davis. Jim served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Kathleen N. Welch June 6, 1970. Jim worked as a Machinist for Woherlt Manufacturing for many years before retiring.

He loved to work in his wood shop in his spare time and was known for his Wishing Wells.

Surviving Jim are his loving wife of 50 years Kathleen Davis of Ionia. Sons Paul Davis of Lansing and Scott (Angela) Davis of Ionia.

Grandson Dakota Davis of Lake Odessa. Great grandson Brycen Davis. Sister in law Marcia (Jim) Elliott of Wyoming.

There will be a memorial visitation for Jim on Saturday, January 30th 2:00-5:00 PM at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. He was born September 15, 1944 in Ionia the son of Henry and Dorothy (Hatfield) Grill.

Martin worked in Skilled Trades for General Motors for many years until his retirement in 2000. He was a member of the Beth Haven Baptist Church in Greenville. Lifetime member of Western Michigan Rifle and Pistol Club. Martin was an avid sports fan, loved MSU and WMU where he was a season ticket holder.

Surviving Martin are his children; John Grill of Lake Odessa, Amy Grill of Ionia, Karen Brown of Sunfield and Jason Grill of Portland.

Grandchildren; Michaela (Joe) Palmer, Christopher Jewell, Kearsten (Russell) Hopkins, Brandon Brown, Taylor Grill, Caleb Grill, Madison Grill, Hailey Yeager and Chelssie Vogt. Great grandchildren, Victoria Riggs, James, Lexi and Danika Palmer. Brother John (Donna) Grill of Ionia. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters Lois Cremeans, Dorothy Dolly, Avis Apps and Christy.

He was born March 4, 1930 in Alma, Michigan to Walter Peter and Coila Marie (Anderson) Hanson.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Sarah Jane (Sykes) Hanson and his children Ann Elisabeth Hanson of Ionia and Ann Arbor, and Peter Scott (Cindy) Hanson of Greenville. His family includes grandsons Daniel (Trista) Hanson, Scott Hanson, Timothy (Kaitlyn) Hanson and great-grandchildren Penelope, Hollyn and David. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and brothers Richard, Philip, and Hugh Hanson. He is also survived by six beloved cats.

David graduated from Ionia High School in 1948 and from the University of Michigan in 1952.

He achieved his Master of Education from Michigan State University in 1966 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Education from Madonna University in 1994.

His military career included Army ROTC, Army Enlisted Reserves, and Army service in the Korean War as First Lieutenant commanding the lead M-46 heavy tank platoon during operations in the Iron Triangle. He was awarded the Bronze Star for valor and his Army Company was awarded the US Presidential Unit Citation for bravery and heroism.

His lifelong work as an educator included teaching at Belding and Pewamo High Schools, principal at Pewamo-Westphalia High School, and more than 40 years working for the State of Michigan in education.

He was a life member of the VFW, Sheridan; Ionia County Hunting and Fishing Club; and led monthly Class of ’48 lunches for twenty years.

He was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Ionia, serving many years as an elder.

Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 12 PM with Visitation from 10 AM until the time of the service. The Funeral will be Livestreamed via Lake Funeral Home’s Facebook page. Public Interment with Military Honors will be at Easton Cemetery at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for First Presbyterian Church, Ionia has been established in the name of David Fregeau Hanson. “The key to making snacks and appetizers more flavorful is with hardwood pellets, which can add rich, wood-fired flavor to just about anything. And, with a few modifications, you don’t even need a pellet grill to achieve that delicious wood-smoked flavor,” says Ben Madden, product manager at Bear Mountain BBQ Woods, crafter of gourmet, hardwood pellets.

Below, Madden shares his winning tips and game-day recipes.

Preparation: 1. Lightly coat wings in seasoning.

2. Arrange wings on smoker or grill at 225 degrees with at least 2 inches of space between.

3. Smoke for 1 to 1.5 hours.

4. Turn up grill to 350 degrees to finish. Start brushing on sauce and turning wings periodically.

5. Once wings hit an internal temperature of 165, remove from the smoker or grill and toss in a bowl with remaining sauce.

Then they’re ready to serve!

No pellet grill or smoker? Try using Smoke ‘Ems wood pellet packets in this recipe in the following way: • On one side of grill, turn burner to medium-high heat or fire up charcoal and place Smoke ‘Ems packet directly over heat until it starts smoking.

• Place wings on other side of grill over medium heat until Smoke ‘Ems has stopped smoking. Note: For more smoke flavor, use a second packet after first has been used.

• Increase temperature under wings and continue with Step 4 above.

BEER CHEESE DIP Bring your appetizer game to a new level with this delicious recipe for Beer Cheese Dip with Pretzel Ring, from Bear Mountain BBQ ambassador, Jennifer Danella: Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese grated • 1/2 cup gruyere cheese grated • 8 ounces cream cheese softened • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard • 1/2 of a 1-ounce Hidden Valley Ranch Packet • 2 tablespoons green onions chopped.

• 1/4 cup German lager beer • 2 tablespoons baking soda • 1 can biscuits • 1 large egg, mixed with 1 tablespoon water, for brushing biscuits • 12-inch cast iron skillet • Bear Mountain’s Bourbon BBQ or Savory BBQ Craft Blends pellets Preparation: 1. Preheat pellet grill to 350 F. 2. In large bowl, combine 1 cup cheddar, gruyere, cream cheese, Dijon mustard, Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning, beer and 1 tablespoon green onions.

Mix evenly.

3. Cut biscuits in half. Roll each half into a ball, then slice an X across top.

4. Boil 2 cups water in medium saucepan. Once boiling, add baking soda and mix immediately.

5. Add biscuits in batches and cook until puffy, approximately 1 minute. Remove and transfer to skillet, forming ring along inside edge.

6. Brush biscuits with egg wash.

Sprinkle with salt.

7. Transfer dip to center of skillet. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar.

8. Bake until biscuits are golden and dip is bubbly, 30-35 minutes.

9. Garnish with remaining green onions. Serve!

Treasurer's report approved as read.

Motion by Harp and supported by Pitchford to pay this month's bills on hand. Motion passed Public Safety report read by board members.

Motion by Harp and supported by Higbee to appoint Larry Goodman, Doris Pierce, Sheri Lynn, and Joe Peckins as alternate as the township Board of Review officers for the years of 2021 and 2022. Roll call votes; Harp (yes), Pitchford (yes), McCoy (yes), Higbee (yes), and Scheurer (yes) Motion passed.

Motion by Harp and supported by Higbee to pay Board of Review alternate $50.00 per years 2021 and 2022. If alternate fills in the pay will be at full rate. Motion passed.

Grand Ledge family witnesses emotional ceremony for Sparrow Specialty Hospital nurse LANSING, MI – During a heartfelt and emotional ceremony, Sparrow Specialty Hospital recently honored Carrie Shrock, RN, with a DAISY Award in recognition of the special care she provided to a very special patient.

Shrock was nominated for a DAISY Award for extraordinary nursing by the mother of a patient who sadly passed away from an eating disorder.

“Carrie provided wonderful care to our daughter, Allison,” said Tammie Rademacher of Grand Ledge. “Carrie was the one nurse she could really connect with.”

Allison was a patient of Schrock’s after she suffered a brain injury from a fall and was admitted to Sparrow Specialty Hospital last year. Although she recovered from her injury and was able to return home, Allison’s struggles with her eating disorder continued and she passed away last summer. But that didn’t stop her mom from wanting to honor the nurse who meant so much to her daughter, helped her recover from her brain injury and allowed her to return home.

“Allison would be so proud and happy that Carrie got this award,” said Tammie Rademacher.

Allison’s parents were grateful to watch Schrock receive the award via Zoom. “We were just thankful to be a part of it,” said Tammie Rademacher.

The book follows Marisol, an immigrant from El Salvador applying for asylum in the United States with her younger sister Gabby. When her asylum request gets turned down, she's given an opportunity to stay in the U.S. The twist is that she has to literally take on
