– OBITUARIES – † ANTHONY On January 2nd, 2024, Mark Poole Anthony Sr. went to join his Heavenly Father. Mark was born December 28, 1953 the son of Lawrence and Margaret Anthony. He graduated from Portland High School class of 1972.

Mark retired from General Motors at the age of 48 after 30 years of loyal service. Though he never served in the Armed Forces he was a strong Patriot and loved his country. Mark had the utmost respect for those who did serve. He enjoyed volunteering at several different American Legions and VFW posts in both Michigan and Florida. One wall in his garage serves as a tribute to the different branches of service. He would always refer to it as the “Honor Wall”. He loved the Michigan Wolverines. GO BLUE! He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed shooting pool.

Mark had a huge heart. He had unconditional love for all of his kids, Grand kids, Nieces and Nephews, Brothers, and Sisters. He rarely spoke ill of anyone and always wished everyone well. Preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Margaret Anthony, Siblings Marilyn Hinds, Midge Rowe, LaVonne Sines, Florence Ingraham and Brother-in-law Coy Marshall.

Daughters Jessica Webb and Julianne Town, Son-in-law Chris LyVere and Grandson Robert Town. Survived by his best friend and loving wife Dianne Anthony of Westphalia. Brothers Lawrence (Vicki) Anthony of Portland, Matt (Joanne) Anthony of Portland, and Sister Leona Jane Marshall of Portland. Children Amy Anthony (James Wheeler) of Portland, Mark Anthony of Six Lakes, Shawn (Pam) Anthony of Grand Ledge, Roman (Pennie) Schafer of Lyons, Cari LyVere of Lyons, Deanne Schafer Fell of Westphalia, John (Nicole) Schafer of Ionia, Angi Schafer (Darvin Cook) of Vestaburg, Marci (Jim) Levering of Lake Odessa. Also survived by 31 Grandchildren; 26 Super Grandchildren and 3 Super Duper Grandchildren and countless Nieces and Nephews. The Memorial Service was conducted by Pastor Jimmy Guffey at 11:30 a.m., Friday, January 12, 2024 at the Church of the Nazarene, 9466 Cutler Rd., Portland. The family received friends at 10:30 a.m. before the service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the family to help with medical expenses. She was born May 26, 1946 in Ionia.

Linda loved to bowl, playing on 4 different leagues in Florida.

She will be missed deeply and was loved by many. Linda spent summers in Michigan where she would ride her golf cart around on her property stopping by the swamp and watching geese and other animals pass by. She goes on to meet her husband Lee, son Bruce, two unborn children, her parents Howard and Eunice Brooks, her sister Christy and her many pets.

Linda is survived by her children; Lisa (Bill) Tompkins of Ionia, Curtis (Daisy) Cook of Orleans, George (Amy) Cook of Lowell. Grandchildren; Christopher (Caroline) Tompkins, Mickel Tompkins, Trenton (Megan) Cook, Amber Cook, Lexi Cook and Liberty Cook. Great grandchildren; Aaron and Violet. Siblings; Janet Brooks, Joe Brooks, Jimmie Brooks, Cathy Harness and Nancy Prebble. Many special friends and family.

Cremation has taken place and Graveside services will be at Tuttle Cemetery, Sunday, May 26th at 11:00 a.m. with an Ice Cream Social to follow at the Old Stone Porch from Noon until 4. † SPITZLEY Dennis William Spitzley, 81, of Ionia,

peacefully departed this world on January 20, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. Dennis was born on June 19, 1942, in Portland, Michigan, to William and Katherine (Shepard) Spitzley. He embarked on his life’s journey after graduating from Ss. Peter & Paul High School in 1960. On August 29, 1964, he married the love of his life, Delores Patrick, and together they shared nearly 60 years of companionship and love. A devoted member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Dennis served as the chairman of numerous Tootsie Roll drives, exemplifying his commitment to his community and faith.

He was known for his unwavering strength in his Catholic faith and lived his life as a quiet man with the biggest, most generous heart.

Dennis dedicated 35 years of his professional life to General Motors, where he served as a supervisor. He retired on July 1, 1999, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. In his free time, Dennis found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed fishing expeditions to Canada with “the guys”, spending time at deer camp with his brother, and playing cards. One of his favorite places was the camping seasonal at School Section Lake in Remus, where lasting friendships were made over many decades. Dennis’ greatest love was undeniably his wife and his family. His grandchildren fondly referred to him as “Papa” and sought his guidance for life advice, his renowned venison recipe, and memorable card games. Above all, they cherished the love he gave to each and every one of them.

Preceding Dennis in death are his parents, William and Katherine Spitzley; brother, Frank Spitzley; in-laws, Barb Patrick, Shelva Smith, Jewel Ritenburg, and Dorothy Risner. Left to cherish Dennis’ legacy are his wife, Delores Spitzley; daughters, Julie (Scott Ralston) Ackerson of Ionia and Sherri (Tony) Dixon of Portland; sons, Mark (Alisha Keasey) Spitzley of Ionia, Scott (Jamie) Cameron of Ionia, and Doug Cameron of Wayland; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Larry (Pam) Spitzley of Ionia; sisters, Susan Hogan of Grand Rapids, Pat (Tom) Reinhardt of Ionia, Mary (Kevin) Walsh of Rockford, and Phyllis (Dan) Richardson of Grand Rapids; and in-laws, Don Patrick of Ionia, Lawrence (Shirley) Patrick of Clarksville, and JoAnne Ervin of Ionia.

Friends and family were invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 3-7 p.m. with the rosary was prayed at 6:30 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Fr. Tom Brown on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ionia. A luncheon will follow at the Ss. Peter & Paul Apostles Hall. Private family committal will take place.

January 20, 2024. He was born April 17, 1947 in Lakeview, Michigan the son of Charles and Elsie (Richards) White.

Gary worked as a State Trooper in his younger years and would later move on to Fisher Body where he worked as a mechanic. Upon retirement he worked at Felice Automotive.

Gary loved working on and collecting cars.

Surviving are his Daughters; Jayne White and Phil Miller of Pewamo, Amy (Michael) Maxwell of Ionia and Kelli (Joseph) Marsh of Lowell. Grandchildren; Dustin Mason, Alex Mason, Jesse Mason, Molly Mason, Adam (Kaitlynn) Maxwell, Amanda (Colton) Barna, Emily (Luke) Helmstetter, Jeremiah Maxwell, Natasha Marsh, Tatiana Marsh, Ivy Marsh and Roman Marsh. Great grandchildren; Melanie Mason, Avery Mason, Ember Mason, Anna Maxwell, Brittney Maxwell, Dylan Maxwell and Charlotte Barna. Brothers; Dale (Judy) White and Richard (Barbara) White. Christine was born March 31st, 1966 to Michael and Carolyn (Hiner) Evans.

She was an incredible wife, mother, and friend whose kindness radiated in all that she did for others, human and animal alike.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Runion; her daughters Erica (Justin) Hudson and Devin Haeck (fiancé Joshua Delapaz); Grandchildren Damon, Zahra, and Sacred; as well as her siblings and many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents.

There will be no service at this time, but rather a celebration of life to be announced at a later date in the spring.

The weather wasn’t the best for our January 22, 2024 American Red Cross Blood Drive at the Saranac Community Church, but our donors were! We were able to collect 40 pints of blood - a big thanks to all of you! The donors enjoyed much needed water, juices, snacks, cookies, sandwiches and Cheryl’s yummy soups to replace their life saving blood.

Barbara Hotchkiss earned her 5 gallon pin - that means 40 trips to the blood drives and donating 40 pints of blood! Thanks, Barbara and Greg! Figure skating is both an athletic and artistic pursuit. Figure skaters often begin training at very young ages and undergo intense sessions if they have goals to skate competitively. However, the majority of people who take to the ice during the holiday season or when local rinks have open skate sessions probably do not aspire to compete in national competitions or the Olympics. Such individuals enjoy the physical workout and want to

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical events from February 2024 The month of February has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in February 1924.

• Honduran President Rafael López-Gutiérrez refuses to leave office on February 1. López-Gutiérrez cites uncertainty regarding a successor as his reason for remaining in office after initially beginning a four-year term on February 1, 1920.

• Former United States President Woodrow Wilson falls into a coma at 10:30 p.m. on February 2. The 67-year-old former president dies less than

24 hours later.

• Thanks in part to the recommendation of British physicians, Indian freedom fighter Mohandas Gandhi is released from incarceration in Ahmedabad on February 4. Gandhi served less than one-third of his six-year prison sentence for sedition.

• Forty-one miners drown in a flash flood inside an underground iron mine near Crosby, Minnesota on February 5. The flood is caused when the crew blasts too close to the bottom of a nearby lake.

• President Wilson is buried in a vault beneath the center aisle

of the chapel of the Washington National Cathedral on February 6. He remains the only president to be buried in the District of Columbia.

• In response to the German Embassy’s refusal to offer condolences or lower flags in honor of President Wilson, roughly 200 taxi drivers plant an American flag on the embassy lawn on February 6.

• The Fascist government of Italy formally recognizes the Communist Soviet Union on February 7.

• On February 8, Chinese national Gee Jon becomes the first person in American history to be executed with lethal gas.

Jon was convicted in a gangland slaying and was put to death in an airtight chamber at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City.

Elsewhere in the United States, five inmates, each convicted murderers, were put to death in Texas, marking the state’s first use of the electric chair.

• Two-hundred fifty delegates

representing 61 trade unions, civic groups and fraternal organizations attend the opening day of the Negro Sanhedrin on February 11. The conference was an attempt to establish a national program protecting the legal rights of African American tenant farmers and wage workers.

• On February 13, one day after testifying in the trial of “Shoeless Joe” Jackson, Chicago White Sox outfielder Oscar “Happy” Felsch is arrested for perjury. Lawyers for the White Sox produced documents contradicting Felsch’s testimony, resulting in his arrest.

• On February 14, the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company renames itself the International Business Machines Corporation, which would ultimately be shortened to IBM. • U.S. Senator Frank L. Greene of Vermont is shot in the head and seriously wounded by a stray bullet during a shootout on February 15. The shootout involved bootleggers and Prohibition enforcement agents, and Senator

Green was struck while walking with his wife along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. • German artist George Grosz is fined 500 gold marks on February 16. The court determined a collection of Grosz’s drawings depicting the decadence of Berlin society was obscene.

• Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos resigns on February 19. Venizelos had been in office less than four weeks.

• U.S. President Calvin Coolidge becomes the first President to make a radio broadcast from the White House on February 22.

• Prime Minister Ahmet Zogu of Albania is shot twice by anarchist Beqir Valteri on February 23. Often referred to as Zog I

of Albania, the prime minister reportedly survived more than 50 assassination attempts over the course of his life. Though Valteri’s efforts were unsuccessful, Zogu’s injuries forced him to step away from office for a short period following the shooting.

• On February 24, the Beverly Hills Speedway hosts its final race. The speedway is torn down as property values in Beverly Hills skyrocket.

• Trials related to the Beer Hall Putsch that occurred on November 9, 1923, begin in Munich on February 26. Adolf Hitler and Erich Ludendorff are among those put on trial.
