Troy Lee Owner
The Saranac FFA hosted a science fair for middle school students at Saranac Jr/Sr High on January 16, 2020. Students had six weeks to design, perform and analyze an experiment about a topic in Agriculture and Natural Resources. A sample of the topics included water loss in eggs, color vs taste of maple syrup and light type on plant growth. Students were judged on their scientific report, poster display and presentation skills. Principal Mr. Leader and former Palo principal, Mrs. Reams, judged their presentations while classroom teacher, Mrs. Young, evaluated their reports and posters. Winning individuals and teams received cash prizes sponsored by Dr. Thaddeus Williams, a former Saranac FFA member. The winners, pictured above, are from left to right: Grace Chase - first individual, Abigail Janson - second individual, Marisa Klahn and Alison Thompson - first team, Dylon Bollone and Harrison VanKuiken - second team.

The American Red Cross Blood Drive was held at the Saranac Community Church on January 27th, 2020. We were blessed with forty-three warm hearted donors on an unusually mild winter day. Elizabeth Callihan received her one gallon pin. Michele Westbrook received her 6 gallon pin. Pamela Grieves received her 15 gallon pin. Wow! Ryan Hesche and Pamela Grieves were Double Red donors. We are so thankful for all our healthy donors! Our next blood drive will be Monday, March 23, 2020.

The origins of Groundhog Day Every year on February 2nd, people anxiously await the appearance of a medium-sized furry mammal who they believe can predict if winter weather will rage on or if spring will arrive
sooner than later. Although it’s a rather strange means of prognostication, millions of people celebrate Groundhog Day, a tradition that is older than many people may know.
The first official Groundhog Day took place on February 2, 1887 at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. In the ensuing 130 years, individuals have gathered in Pennsylvania and other areas around the United States to find out if the groundhog will see his shadow. If the groundhog sees his shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, then spring will arrive early. Although the Groundhog Day of today is relatively new, the concept is actually quite old and dates back to the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas. Candlemas is a Christian holiday commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. Candlemas falls on the 40th day of the Christmas/ Epiphany period and is one of the oldest feasts of the Christian Church, celebrated since the 4th century in Jerusalem. Around the 14th century in Europe, Candlemas began to overshine Pagan
holidays like Lupercalia (Romans) and Imbolc (Celts). Rather than torches and blessings from goddesses, on Candlemas custom called for members of the clergy to bless candles and distribute them to the people to symbolize that Christ was the light of the world. Weather played a role in the celebration of Candlemas. Rainy, wet weather was preferable because it suggested spring’s arrival was on the horizon. Candlemas was celebrated in many parts of Europe and eventually spread to Germany, where animals were involved in the ceremony. Hedgehogs were plentiful in the area, and celebrants believed if they cast a shadow during fair weather on Candlemas, more bad weather was in store. Pennsylvania’s earliest settlers were German, and these immigrants brought their Candlemas traditions with them. But hedgehogs were not common in Pennsylvania, so settlers used groundhogs instead. Thus, the groundhog was seen as a wise and suitable substitute for prognostication. Today’s celebrations include tens of thousands of visitors from all around the world who travel to Pennsylvania to see Punxsutawney Phil in person. Phil has become a celebrity of sorts and has appeared on various television shows, on a jumbo screen in Times Square and as the star of the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day.” (Although the real Phil was

1,000 successfully completed & notarized applications processed for Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission
Geographic and demographic breakdown to be announced soon
LANSING — The first 1,000 successfully completed and notarized applications to serve on the first-ever Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission have been received and processed by the Michigan Department of State. “This process has been citizen-led from beginning to end, and it is inspiring to see so many Michiganders actively participate in our democracy and get involved,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “The results so far have exceeded our expectations and reflect overwhelming public support and excitement for the opportunity for voters to determine fair and competitive districts.” Ultimately, the commission of 13 randomly selected applicants will have exclusive authority to adopt district boundaries in Michigan for the state Senate, state House of Representatives and U.S. Congress. The first 1,000 successfully completed and notarized applications were returned to the department prior to December 2019. Staff continues to process applications that have been received subsequently and periodic updates will be provided to the public between now and the June 1, 2020, application deadline. A breakdown of the geographic and demographic profile of the pool of processed applicants will be released by the department within weeks. The state is bringing on new temporary staff to help process the stacks of applications that are pending review, while more applications continue to arrive daily. Applications were mailed to 250,000 randomly selected voters Dec. 30. The application
is also available online at RedistrictingMichigan.org. “We want applications from as many people as possible, from all backgrounds and regions of the state,” Benson said. The Michigan Constitution requires all applications to be signed in the presence of a notary and returned to the Department of State by June 1, 2020. Then, 200 semifinalists must be randomly selected from the pool, sixty of whom must affiliate with the Democratic Party, 60 with the Republican Party, and 80 must not affiliate with either party. Half of these semifinalists must be recipients of the random mailing. The final citizen commission, once selected, will be made up of four voters who affiliate with the Democratic Party, four who affiliate with the Republican Party, and five who do not affiliate with either major party. The deadline for the commission to adopt a redistricting plan for Michigan’s districts is Nov. 1, 2021. District lines for political offices in Michigan, as in other states, must be redrawn every decade following the U.S. Census. Under the new constitutional provision, voters assigned the Secretary of State the responsibility of administering the application and selection process of commissioners, as well as providing administrative support to the commission once formed. The commission itself will be an autonomous body. For more information on the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, visit RedistrictingMichigan.org. Michiganders with questions should email Redistricting@Michigan.gov.
