prevent the crime and enter to win a reward. The challenge begins on January 1. Visit www. mi.gov/MiLibraryQuest to learn more. Page Turners Page Turners is Portland District Library’s new book club for Teens, ages 13-18. Our first book is “The Grief Keeper” by Alexandra Villasante. The book follows Marisol, an immigrant from El Salvador applying for asylum in the United States with her younger sister Gabby. When her asylum request gets turned down, she's given an opportunity to stay in the U.S. The twist is that she has to literally take on the grief of another girl about her age. Join our book club to find out how Marisol’s journey ends. Registration will start on Tuesday, February 23rd and is limited to 10 teens. Upon registration, each teen will receive their own copy of the book to keep and a bookmark with program details. We will meet via Zoom on Tuesday, March 16th and Tuesday, April 13th at 6:30 pm. Contact Jamie Goodman at jgoodman@portlandmilibrary. com with any questions. You Can Knit It Is one of your New Year's resolutions to do more crafting? Let Portland District Library get you started. Using arm knitting techniques, we will learn how to create a cute scarf that will show off your new skills. Take-andMake Bags will include the yarn for one scarf and will be available in the Youth Department beginning February 3rd. Make sure to follow along with our YouTube tutorial, also available starting February 3rd. You must be at least 13 years old to register for this program.

Portland District Library Lines Are you planning on reading this Winter? Why not try to win some prizes while you’re at it? Portland District Library is offering an all-ages Winter Reading Program starting Friday, January 22nd. Patrons can decide between using PDL’s virtual reading tracker, Beanstack, or picking up a traditional paper tracker at the library. Adult readers will be entered to win a grand prize for each badge they earn and then can collect a prize after earning all five badges. Youth readers, ages 18 and under, will be competing for weekly prizes for each age group: Littles (ages 0-5), Middles (ages 6-12), and Teens (ages 13-18). All reading must be logged on Beanstack and trackers turned in by Friday, February 26th. CHILDREN’S AND TEEN STEM Club Virtual STEM Club is back in January exploring static electricity. Using constructed lightsabers and tinsel orbs, we will channel and master mystical forces to suspend and move our tinsel orbs in the air! Registration for Take-and-Make bags begins January 6. This is not a live video, so the program can be done on your own time after the video is posted to our YouTube channel on January 13. Virtual STEM Club is recommended for ages 6-12, requires parental supervision, and is limited to 25 patrons. MI Library Quest Extra! Extra! Read all about it! An anonymous tip has come in that a thief has announced they will steal an iconic Michigan landmark on Valentine's Day. We’re recruiting teenage private detectives charged with stopping the heist. What’s behind slow computers Few things can derail a productive workday more quickly than a slow computer. Many a professional has encountered the dreaded slowdown or spinning color wheel, only to sit in frustration as deadlines draw closer and tasks pile up. Computers can perform slowly due to a variety of factors, many of which can be addressed rather easily. • Too much multitasking: Successful professionals pride themselves on their ability to multitask, but computers can only handle so much. Running many programs simultaneously or having too many browser tabs open at one time is a recipe for a slow computer. Keeping various programs open at once slows down processing speed, leading to lags when switching from one program to another. This is easily overcome by closing programs at the end of each workday and opening them only when you need to. Leaving multiple browser windows open at one time also slows down a computer, especially if the windows are open to pages that auto-refresh. Close windows when you’re done reading an article or no longer need to access information on a particular website. • Software updates: Automatic software updates can be convenient, but they also take up space on computer hard drives. According to TechAdvisory.org, computers
run smoothly when at least 15 percent of their total hard drive space is free. Turn off automatic updates and periodically check for updates on your own. If updates are available, install them during non-working hours so you don’t have to wait for the update to install during the workday. • Inadequate hard drive space: Though it’s best to keep at least 15 percent of your hard drive space free, TechAdvisory.org notes that professionals who routinely work on multiple files at one time can very quickly use up more than 85 percent of their hard drive space, especially if they need to store those files on their computers. In such instances, purchasing additional hard drive space can improve performance. Adding more RAM, which temporarily stores data that is currently being worked on, also can help users overcome storage-related slowdowns. • Viruses: Computer viruses are most often linked to corrupted files and frozen screens, but they also can cause computers to operate more slowly. Conduct a virus scan on the computer to see if that’s what’s behind the spinning color wheel or frozen screens. Many things can cause a computer to slow down. Thankfully, there are just as many solutions to fix slow computers as there are problems that can adversely affect their performance.
