– OBITUARIES –

† BAILEY With her daughters by her side, Edith Louise (Piselli) Bailey, known by almost everyone as “Dolly”, died peacefully on January 11, 2022, at Country Living Adult Foster Care in Portland. She was born the only daughter of Italian immigrant parents, the late Raffaele Piselli and Mary (Zaffarano) Piselli who settled in Ionia from Cosenza, Italy. Some may remember the Piselli’s Grocery on W. Lincoln Avenue that the whole family had a role in until it was sold in the mid 1960’s. Dolly was a lifelong member of St Peter and Paul Church in Ionia. She was a 1948 graduate of St Peter and Paul Academy. She married in 1950 and had three children. Dolly enjoyed the role of mother and homemaker until 1970. She then entered the workforce at Bosley Pharmacy. Most people would recognize her as the friendly smiling little lady at the front register. In retirement she filled her time as a substitute for Ionia Public Schools Food Service from 1993-2007. In her younger years, she enjoyed camping in West Michigan, cooking, traveling on bus tours, tending to her beautiful flowers, but most precious to her was spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her children, Steven (Lynn) Bailey, Cheryl (Kim) Foster and Carol (Gordon) Francisco, her grandchildren, Casey (Kelly) Bailey, Corey (Denise) Bailey, Brady (Rebecca) Foster, Matthew (Carmen) Foster, Krista (Jay P) Dudley and Jenna (Brandon) Richmond, her great grandchildren, Ethan and Xander Bailey, Eden (Josh) Gomer, Morgan Bailey, Kiera Hickerson, Olivia, Nolan and Gavin Foster, Ethan and Claire Foster, Sawyer and Grayson Dudley, 4 great great grandchildren, her sister in law, Jean Piselli, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dolly was preceded in death by her brother and sister in law, Frank and Anna Piselli, their daughter Mary Lynn Piselli, her brother Louis Piselli, and her in laws on the Bailey side: Bert (Ruth) Bailey, Donald (Doris) Bailey, Robert (Joane) Bailey, and Helen (Clare) Wilson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 11am, with Fr. Tom Brown officiating. Relatives and friends may meet with family immediately preceding the Mass starting at 10am. A luncheon will follow mass in Apostles Hall in the school. Interment will be in the Spring at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Country Living AFC, 7884 Emery Road, Portland, MI, 48875 or Ionia Area Hospice, PO Box 124, Ionia, MI, 48846. The family requests that we continue to pray for a prevention or cure for Dementia. Funeral care has been entrusted to Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, in Belding. She was born on March 31, 1936 to Adelia Nash McAlary and A. Leo McAlary. She attended school at SS Peter and Paul Academy in Ionia where she enjoyed performing in school musicals. Though she was a talented singer and played the piano, she was also strong and adventurous growing up, loved swimming and boating, and even recalled riding her horse many times alone to the Nash family farm in Clarksville. After attending Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, she married her hometown sweetheart Lawrence Donovan in 1956. They travelled a bit with his baseball career, but they ultimately returned to Ionia where they settled and raised their family. Carolynne was a dedicated teacher, and spent the majority of her career teaching 4th grade at Jefferson Elementary School in Ionia. She truly enjoyed students from the early days who came back to visit as adults. Outside of school, her family was her priority, but she also enjoyed reading and listening to or performing music. She was a long time member of Ionia Women’s Literary Club. In addition to her parents, Carolynne is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, her daughter Kelley McClintock, and her brother Joseph McAlary. She will be dearly missed by her children and their spouses, Mary (Tom) Livingston, Deborah Belcore, and Douglas (Mary) Donovan. She was a loving grandmother to Katherine and Jack Livingston, Christopher and Robert Belcore, Jennifer (Chris) Spearling, John William Hearld, and Lia and Conor Donovan. Her great-grandchildren Nolan and Calen Spearling, Korinthia and Pascale Belcore, and Gavin Hearld brought her special fourth generation joy. She is also survived by her sister Mary McAlary, brothers Phillip (Holly) and William McAlary, sister-in-law Marie (Norm) Arndt, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held 12:00 pm, Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia with Father Tom Brown presiding. Arrangements by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. John was born on December 29, 1945, the son of Erwin and Laurel (Pant) Lozo in Plainwell, Michigan. John worked for General Motors for 38 years. He enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. He loved his animals and was known to never turn one away. He is survived by his daughter, Lori (Barry) O’Brien of New York; sister, Amie Shattuck of Lyons; grandchildren, Mackenzie O’Brien and Brenden O’Brien. John was preceded in death by his parents, Laurel Ferris and Erwin Lozo and sister, Sharon Lozo. † PEABODY Richard L. Peabody, 90, formerly of Ionia passed away Saturday, December 25, 2021 in Arizona where he had lived since 1980. Born to Reo & Alta Peabody on August 27, 1931, who preceded him in death along with his wife, Beverly and sister Carol. He played football at IHS and graduated in 1950. He served in the US Army and was employed at the Oldsmobile plant in Lansing until retiring in 1980. Survivors include son Fred, daughters Annette and Teresa, step-son Randy and step-daughter Luanne, sisters Jackie and Catherine. Seven grandsons, eleven great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Due to COVID surge, Sparrow to limit patient visitors

LANSING, MI –Due to the prevalence of the COVID virus within our region and increased transmission of the Omicron variant, Sparrow is modifying its inpatient visitor policy throughout the Health System in order to better protect caregivers, visitors and patients. The following is effective Tuesday, Jan. 11: • Only one visitor allowed per patient each day. Patients or their representative will be asked to coordinate with their family and friends so the appropriate visitors are allowed access. Currently, two visitors are allowed per patient. • Patients in Pediatrics and Women’s Services units can have two visitors designated throughout their stay. There is no change in the policy for these units. • There is also no change in policy for patients in the Emergency Department, who may have one visitor once they are in a room. • Comfort Care/End-of-Life patients will be addressed on a case by case basis. Reducing the number of visitors into the health system helps to limit the potential spread of the virus as we experience a record high number of COVID positive patients and caregivers. We will re-evaluate the policy when COVID numbers decline. Although the increase in COVID positive patients and caregivers may warrant tighter restrictions, Sparrow believes visitation is an important part of the healing/ caring process. All COVID-19 positive patient

visitors must set up an appointment by calling 517.364.2514. All visitors are required to properly wear face masks at all Sparrow locations. If a mask is not being properly worn, the individual will be asked to leave the facility and may lose their visitation rights. State Rep. Julie Calley was recently named 2021 House Member of the Year by the Michigan Information and Research Service (MIRS), an online newsletter providing news and analysis of state government. Calley, who serves as chair of the House Local Government and Municipal Finance Committee and assistant majority floor leader, was commended for her leadership on efforts to expand access to childcare, lower the cost of prescription drugs, modernize 911 technology, protect vulnerable children and adults from abuse, and offer new economic development opportunities for Michigan communities. MIRS editor Kyle Melinn said the publication weights each legislator’s impact, level of activity and effectiveness when selecting the House Member of the Year. “When you look at it though those three categories, it becomes clear that our House Member of the Year is Julie Calley,” Melinn said. “Julie Calley has taken every opportunity, it

seems, to work with Republicans and Democrats alike in a collaborative fashion to advance various bills in extremely different categories.
