News from the Depot
by D. Marilyn Reed
“THE PURPOSE of this organization shall be dedicated to preserve the Boston-Saranac area history and to inform the residents of local historical facts so future generations will take pride and interest in our culture and in their roots.” This mission statement is printed on the Boston-Saranac Historical Society’s (bi-annual) “Newsletter”.
With the help of donations from area families, schools, churches and various organizations, the provenance of most of the artifacts on display at the Depot Museum is well known. That information comes from diaries, letters, oral histories and/or interviews, plus previous research documentation. Others?? Well, suffice it to say we sometimes end up with a lot of our questions left unanswered.
Case in point – this 1880’s bayonet was found in 2015 by a mushroom hunter, Gregory Geiger, under an oak tree just to the east of the Depot grounds between the Grand River and where the railroad tracks used to be – between the present day “Saranac Riverwalk” and “Fred Meijer Rails to Trails” pathway. Having no one to answer the pressing question, “How did it get here?” it was referred to a MSU (Michigan State University) history teacher who said the bayonet came from an 1881 Springfield Rifle.
Further research shows that the “Springfield Trapdoor” rifle was the standard rifle used by the U.S. Military in one form of another since the late 1860s. In the years following the U.S. Civil War, Springfield Armory produced bayonets by re-working older bayonets left over from the (Civil) war. For the Model 1880, the armory departed from previous bayonet designs and attempted to produce a combination bayonet and cleaning rod – thus, the triangular-ramrod-bayonet. The 1880s did not do well in testing, and all were returned from the field and were placed in storage. It is oftentimes dangerous to assume, but most likely the bayonets were also returned from the field, along with the rifles. Interesting – but it still doesn’t tell us “How did our bayonet get here beside the railroad in Saranac?” We’ll probably never know the whole story about this one (1) particular artifact now on display at the Depot Museum but it was found in Saranac, and the backstory of where and how it was found is now part of our overall history. …. but with a little imagination – the stories it could tell?
