Beverly J. Johnston age 85 of Ionia passed away January 4, 2022. She was born February 10, 1936 in Lansing the daughter of Anthony and Dorothy (Kellogg) Helderop. Beverly married Ronald W. Johnston January 22, 1953 he preceded her in death February 1, 2014. She worked with her husband for many years at Tony’s Crystal Flash and Service in Ionia. She later worked for Kmart in Customer Services and followed as a manager at Frosty Boy in Ionia. Beverly was a very active member of Temple Baptist Church, Shiloh Community Church and Zion Church over several years known as the Prayer Warrior. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Surviving are her children; Ronald (Laura) Johnston of Greenville, Christine (Rod) Galloway of Ionia, Becky Wagner of Ionia and Greg (Karen) Johnston of Ionia. Grandchildren; Stacie (Dinos) Chamlas of Florida, Andy (Alisha) Galloway of Lake Odessa, Stephanie Wagner of Lansing, Amber (Micah) Miller of Ionia, Tori Johnston of Muir and Abby Johnston of Lyons. Great grandchildren; Dalton Galloway, Lilli Eastman, Liddie Sue Chamlas and Eliana Beverly Chamlas. Sister-in-law Sandra Heldrop of Kentwood. Several grand dogs also survive. Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, brothers Richard Helderop, Major Tony Helderop and Sister Bonnie Shattuck. Funeral services for Beverly will be held Monday, January 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Cliff Allen officiating. Violet Joy Weeks Raimer age 86 of Saranac passed away January 1, 2022 at her home on her beloved farm in the presence of her family. Joy as she was known by her family and friends was a life-long resident of the Saranac area. She was born January 14, 1935 in Keene Township the daughter of Glenn D. and Ethel B. (Compton) Weeks. Joy attended and graduated from Saranac Community Schools. She is survived by her children; Rhonda (Bill) Palmer, Renee (Ron) Goff, Scott Raimer (Christie Soules), Mike Raimer and Mark (Catherine) Raimer. Sister Bea Bowen. Her love for animals and farming led her to become active with 4-H where she loved showing her Long-Horned- Brown Swiss cattle in Detroit at the State Fair. While in school she enjoyed basketball and cheerleading. In her adult years her interests included camping and singing with her brother and sisters at the Lowell Showboat. Joy was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Crystal Taylor, June Smith, Gladys McLeod, Alberta Allen and brother Ron Weeks. Private graveside services will be held at Saranac Cemetery. Clifford Lee Rowley, age 68, of Ionia, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021. Cliff was born on April 26, 1953, the son of Gilbert and Kathleen (Lehman) Rowley in Ionia. On August 12, 1972, he married the love of his life, the former Brenda Beach. Cliff worked at Wilson’s Heating and Cooling and Gencorp Automotive. Cliff loved being self-employed until his retirement. He was a part of the Ionia Farm Power Club for many years. He loved being outdoors and fixing cars and tractors. Cliff was proud of the mechanical traits he passed on to several family members especially his son and grandsons. They were always repairing or working on something to get it started. Cliff had a purple truck and a unique train horn that everyone could hear when he was out and about. When he was well, he took daily road trips in the purple truck and loved it just about as much as his John Deere 420. He was always willing to help anyone in need. Cliff is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; son, Kevin (Rachiel) Rowley; daughter, Anne (Ed) Bignall; sisters, Carolyn (Bob) Darnell and Lorraine (Ralph) Montgomery; sisters-in-law, Diane Rowley, Charlene (Gene) Face, Kristeen (Chris) Benedict, Janet Beach (Mike Higgs), Barbara Treadway and Beth (Dan) Mills; brothers-in-law, Gene Parks, Albert Hopkins, Roger Beach, Leslie Beach (Kimmy Ryers) and Bob Beach (Melissa Borton); grandchildren, Jadyn Rowley, Lane Bignall, Katelyn Bignall and Ryan Bignall; Several nieces and nephews, and honorary granddaughter, Mallory Wood. Ionia – The Ionia County Health Department will be giving away FREE short-term radon test-kits throughout the month of January in return for the donation of a non-perishable food item. This is in observance of National Radon Action Month. Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas found naturally in the environment. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall. Radon gas is released from rock or soil and may seep into homes through the foundation, cracks in floors and walls, or gaps around service pipes. A high level of radon in your home increases your risk of exposure to radiation which increases your risk for lung cancer. The Ionia County Health Department recommends that all homes be tested. Testing your home is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from radon since there are no warning signs or symptoms of exposure. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 1 out of 15 homes in the US have elevated radon levels. Please join us in marking Radon Action Month by sharing this information. Treasurer’s report approved as read. Ionia Community Library District spokesperson, Gail Yeomans spoke to the board. The people of Sayers Subdivision would like the Township of Ionia to handle the monies for their road maintenance. We suggested that they form an association board or a Road Maintenance agreement of their own. Assessor Heather Hoffman explained her role in the township. Motion by Scheurer and supported by Pitchford to pay this month’s bills on hand. Motion passed The Township’s new Public Safety officer is Alec Lynn. Motion by Higbee and supported by Pitchford to accept Keegan Teitsma as a Board of Review member with term ending 2023. Motion passed Motion by Harp and supported by Scheurer to leave our Private Rd.
