Area Deaths

† SHATTUCK Alice Avis (Wells) Shattuck, 88, of Ionia went home to be with her Lord and

Savior on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the SKLD facility in Ionia. Alice was born December 18, 1932 to Paul and Reha (Dutcher) Wells in Portland, Michigan where she grew up on the family farm.

There she gained a strong work ethic that she never lost.

After graduating from Portland High School in 1950, Alice moved to Ionia to work as a Michigan Bell Telephone operator; there in Ionia she met lifelong friends including her future husband, Oren Shattuck III. She was married 57 years to Oren until his death in 2011.

Surviving are her daughters Susan Albertson-Wood (Richard Sinke) of Lowell and Rebekah Shattuck of Saranac; son Oren (Rachel) Shattuck IV of Ionia; grandchildren Christine ( David) Rightmire of Edmond, OK, Sean (Cynthia) Wood of Grayling, MI, Timothy Shattuck of Ionia, Sarah (Andrew) Scott of Hanston, KS; seven great-grandchildren; brothers Gerald Wells of Portland and Stephen (Cindy) Wells of Grandville; sister Doris Maag of Charlotte; sisters-in-law Geri Wells of Lowell and Marilyn Wells of Reed City; her extended Shattuck Family through marriage especially Barb and Ben Staphish of Hastings and Laura Rademacher of Lansing, and Alice’s church family at Galilee Baptist Church in Saranac.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Oren, son Daniel Shattuck, grandson Michael Wood; sisters Pauline (Clinton) Powell and Josephine (Herschell) Hosford; brothers Ronald (Marsella) Wells, Richard (Joyce) Wells and Norman Wells, and brothers-in-law Francis Maag, Ed Bentley, and Clinton Powell.

Alice loved the Lord with all her heart and was a faithful servant. She loved her family and the adventures they shared. Besides treasuring her own children and grandchildren, Alice cared diligently for over a hundred children during a 40-year span. Alice enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing crafts, and gardening.

The family of Alice Shattuck would like to thank SKLD of Ionia for their gentle and loving care over the past few years but especially these last few days. Thank you for the prayers and encouraging words of support from our family and friends.

A Celebration of Alice Shattuck’s life will be planned after the pandemic allows us to safely gather.

† STAFFORD Rosemary Peck Stafford, 86, a former resident of Saranac, Michigan, passed away on December 29, 2020, in Richmond, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Nicholas Stafford, her parents Carl and Muriel Peck, her brother Blaine Peck, and brother-in-law Auburn Hubbard.

Rosemary graduated from Saranac High School as the salutatorian of her class in 1952. She went on to Michigan State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in business in 1957. When she returned to Saranac, she was employed by Old Kent Bank as a computer analyst. Subsequently, she married Nicholas Stafford and moved to Kingston, New York. Upon his retirement, they made their home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Recently, they moved to the Richmond, Virginia area to be closer to family.

Many residents of Saranac will remember Rosemary and her dog, Cheetah, who visited the elementary schools in Ionia County, where Cheetah performed her profound math abilities by barking the correct answers.

Rosemary is survived by her sister Gloria Hubbard, sister-in-law Katie Peck, children Pamela Dean and Eric (Tammie) Dean, grandchildren Brad (Susanne) McGuire, Brandon (Chloe) Dean, Jessica Dean, Stephen Dean and six great grandchildren: Bradley, Jr., Kaitlynn, Faith, Elliana, Lyla, and Christian.

Rosemary and Nicholas will be laid to rest in the Saranac Cemetery at a later date.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital names two DAISY Award recipients IONIA, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital has honored two extraordinary nurses, Krista Hardy, RN, and Casie Lambert, RN, with the DAISY Award in recognition of their patient-centered approach to care.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given to nurses every day.

Both nurses were lauded for their professional and positive attitude, and always being willing to help wherever there is a need. Patients were quick to say how well the caregivers explained what procedures were being done and why.

Hardy, a nurse in Medical/ Surgical Department, has worked at Sparrow Ionia since August 2019. She lives in Carson City with her family.

“Kristi is always upbeat.

She has a wonderful way to help comfort patients while they are here,” said Steve Dexter, BSN, RN, manager of the Med/Surg Dept.

Lambert, a nurse in Sparrow Ionia’s Emergency Department, was presented the award in a recent ceremony.

She has been employed at Sparrow Ionia since October 2016. She lives in the Lyons/Muir area with her husband and 3 children.

“Casie is a great nurse who puts her patients’ priorities above her own. She is very deserving of this, and I am so happy she’s part of our great emergency care team,” stated Tara Lanz, BSN, RN, Emergency Department manager.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is a national program created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999 of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, or ITP, at age 33. His family was overwhelmed by the skillful and compassionate nurses who cared for him, and the DAISY Foundation and Award were created as an expression of their gratitude.

Hardy and Lambert received a certificate, a DAISY pin, a beautiful stone sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

The sculpture depicts the embracing relationship nurses have with their patients.
