† GREGG Myriam R Gregg died of congestive heart failure December 25, 2022, at home surrounded by family in Ionia, MI. She was 99 years 9 months old. Myriam was born Raymonde Angeline Armondine Guillaume, oldest of 5 children of Solange Colin and Emile Guillaume on March 11, 1923, in Longnes, west of Paris, France. After her father died when she was 13, she helped support the family by working for a cousin who owned a bakery, delivering bread on foot. She was just a teenager at the start of the Nazi occupation of France during WWII. At 23, she came to Michigan in the spring of 1946 as a war bride of Roswell Ghastin and lived in Benzie County for many years where she learned English and became a practical nurse at the Frankfort Hospital working for her friend and mentor Ena Jackson. This is when and where she changed her name to Myriam. After their divorce, she met (over Ham-Radio) and then married Glenn W. Gregg in Sault Ste Marie, MI on Jan 21, 1956. There they had 4 children, George, Phillip, Glenna, and Annette. They made their home in the Soo for many years.

In 1968, Glenn got a job at the Ionia Sentinel-Standard and the rest of the family moved to Ionia in the fall of 1970. Myriam also worked part-time at the Sentinel-Standard as a “stuffer” before machinery inserted the ad flyers in the paper and in the print shop in the basement. Myriam was kind to her older neighbors and looked in on them and helped them when they were ill. She also loved to knit, crochet, and tat. She knitted many sets of booties, mittens, and hats for Eight-Cap over the years until a broken wrist made it too difficult. She was in relatively good health until about 3 years ago and was known to walk the mile or so to town and then back again even into her 90’s. She was a member of T.A.S.Y.L.’s, an amateur radio club, for 55 years, and had her Ham Radio license for over 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn in 1986, her father in 1936, mother in 1993, brother Marcel in 2016, niece Louisette in June 2022, her brother-in-law Jim Gregg, sisters-in-law Jean Gregg and Minnie (Jim) Ferraro and son-in-law Raymond Johnson. She is survived by her children George (Carol) Gregg, Phillip Gregg, Glenna (Raymond) Johnson of Arkansas, Annette (David) McCord and her sister-in-law Colette Guillaume, her sisters, Therese (Louis) Geffroy, Henriette (Pierre) Barthelemy, Giselle (Lucien) Heymonet, half-sister Gabrielle Vieules and recently discovered (through DNA) in-laws Rosemary Reece, Ernest Johnson, and Betty Van Huss. She was a grandmother to Jennifer Gregg, Justin Gregg, Rachel Lau, Jody Johnson, Aaron Johnson, Brad Johnson, Amanda McCord-Ford, Colleen Farrell, and Joe McCord. A great-grandmother to 11, Aunt and Great-Aunt to many. She will be missed by all. Funeral services will be at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Monday, January 2, 2023, 1:00 PM. A visitation will be 2 hours prior to services from 11-1. In lieu of flowers or plants, please donate to the American Heart Association. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com

8 Health Resolutions Doctors Encourage You to Make Today

(StatePoint) The New Year represents a fresh start and is the perfect time to invest in your health. However, you may be unsure what resolutions will have the biggest impact. Doctors say that the easy, tangible actions you take are some of the most important.

“Many people kick off the start of each new year with big-picture health resolutions,” says Jack Resneck, Jr., M.D., president of the American Medical Association (AMA). “The good news is that small, positive health choices made right now can have long-lasting effects.”

Want to get started today? Here are the 10 resolutions the AMA recommends top your list this year:

1. Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health, so get moving today. A good rule of thumb for adults is at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity.

2. Vaccination is the best protection against a number of serious illnesses. To protect yourself and your family, get up to date on your vaccines, including the annual flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. Your doctor can let you know if you’re due for a COVID booster. If you have questions, speak with your physician and review trusted resources, including getvaccineanswers.org.

3. Get screened. Estimates based on statistical models show that since April 2020, millions of screenings for breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer diagnoses may have been missed due to pandemic-related care disruptions. Check in with your physician. If you’re due for preventive care, tests or screenings, make an appointment. These measures are designed to keep you healthy and help your doctor spot certain conditions

before they become more serious.

4. High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, can increase your risk of heart attack or stroke, and it affects millions of Americans. Visit ManageYourBP.org to understand what your blood pressure numbers mean and what you can do to get your blood pressure under control.

5. One in 3 American adults has prediabetes, a condition that can lead to type 2 diabetes if left unmanaged. However, there are steps you can take that can help delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Learn your risk by taking a simple 2-minute self-screening test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org. This resource also features helpful lifestyle tips that can help you reverse prediabetes.

6. Whenever possible, drink water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages and replace processed foods -- especially those with added sodium and sugar -- with nutritious, whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, herbs and spices.

7. If consuming alcohol, drink only in moderation. The U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans defines that as up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age.

8. Speak with your doctor or health care professional about quitting tobacco and nicotine use. Declare your home and car smokefree to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure.

If you don’t have health insurance, the AMA encourages you to sign up for coverage at healthcare.gov, which has new, affordable options. The enrollment deadline for 2023 coverage is Jan. 15, 2023. Find more health resources at ama-assn. org. For a healthy 2023 and beyond, invest in your wellness with these doctor-recommended New Year’s resolutions.
