Physical activity guidelines for children, adolescents and adults Staying healthy is a full-time job for people of all ages. While it might not always prove so easy to exercise or eat right, the benefits of healthy living are undeniable. According to the Partnership to Fight Chronic Disease, “prevention”
refers to helping people avoid getting sick or identifying diseases early so treatment can begin. Immunizations and disease screenings are two vital components of preventive care, but children, adolescents and adults can take more active roles in preventive
care by embracing physical activity. The Department of Health and Human Services notes that physical activity fosters normal growth and development and can help people feel better, function better, sleep better, and reduce their risk for a
large number of chronic diseases. Reducing risk for chronic disease keeps people out of the doctor’s office, or even the hospital, and it also can help save considerable amounts of money. One report from the The Milken Institute estimated that high chronic disease and obesity rates are responsible for more than $1 trillion in lost productivity in the workplace every year. In addition, the National Commission on Prevention Priorities notes that increasing the use of five preventive services to 90 percent can save more than 100,000 lives in the United States each year. Such services include advising smokers to quit and offering medication or other assistance to help them and providing flu shots for people age 65 and older. In recognition of the role exercise plays in preventive care, the DHHS recommends children, adolescents and adults follow these physical activity guidelines. Children and adolescents The DHHS recommends that children and adolescents between the ages of six and 17 should get 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day.
• Aerobic: Most of the 60 minutes or more per day should be either moderate- or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity and should include vigorous-intensity physical activity at least three days a week. • Muscle-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include muscle-strengthening physical activity at least three days a week. • Bone-strengthening: As part of their 60 minutes or more of daily physical activity, children and adolescents should include bone-strengthening physical activity at least three days a week. Parents can consult with their children’s physicians to determine age-appropriate muscle- and bone-strengthening activities for their youngsters. Adults The DHHS advises adults to make a concerted effort to move more and sit less throughout the day. Some physical activity is better than none. Adults who sit less and do any amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity gain some health benefits. For substantial health benefits,
adults should get at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity each week. An equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity can serve as a substitute. Ideally, aerobic activity should be spread throughout the week. Adults should do muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or greater intensity that involve all major muscle groups two or more days a week, as the DHHS notes these activities provide additional health benefits. These guidelines also apply to older adults, but older adults also should incorporate balance training into their exercise routines. In addition, the DHHS urges older adults to consult with their physicians about the appropriate level of effort for physical activity relative to their level of fitness. People of all ages should include physical activity in their preventive health care routines. More information about exercise is available at www.health.gov.

Jean Marie Hecht age 81 of Saranac passed away December 23, 2020. She was born November 12, 1939 in Muskegon the daughter of William and Gertrude (Koekkoek) Eller. Jean married William Hecht February 12, 1977 in East Lansing. Jean was an active member at Saranac Community Church having involvement with the Food Pantry and Christmas Store. She was a member of Farm Bureau. Jean was a very talented singer and enjoyed sharing her songs with many. She was very kind and always enjoyed visits with many. Jean is survived by her loving husband Bill Hecht of Saranac. Children; Jeff Baars of Saranac, Sandy Hecht of Clarksville, TN, Jodie Baars of Gladwin, Michelle Gingrich of Clarksville, TN and Steve (Lynn) Hecht of Clarksville, TN. 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren also survive. In laws; Mike Hecht of Florida, Barb (Greg) Hotchkiss of Saranac and Tom (Joy) Hecht of Saranac. Mother-in-law Evelyn Hecht of Hastings. Preceding Jean in death was her Son Jamie Baars, brother Bill Eller and father-in-law Bill Hecht Sr. Cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of Jeans life at a later date. † HOLTON George “Jack” A Holton III, age 87 of Sheridan, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020. Jack was born on February 18, 1933 the son of George and Bertha (Brown) Holton II, in Sunfield, MI. On December 20, 1956, he married the love of his life, Ruth. Jack served his country during the Korean War and received 4 bronze stars. He was also a member of the Sheridan VFW. He enjoyed fishing, tinkering and restoring motors. He loved to laugh and joke, and loved his dachshunds and country music. Jack is survived by his step-sons, John (Cheryl) Richards of Laingsburg, Douglas (Karen) Richards of Indiana and Larry (Annie) Richards of East Lansing; grandchildren, Toni, Paul “Nate”, Erica, Sheila, John and Sara; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth; son, George “Jake” Holton IV; and 10 brothers and sisters. Cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time. Winter can be an awe-inspiring time of year. Snow-covered landscapes and opportunities to enjoy sports like skiing and snowboarding make winter a favorite time of year for nature enthusiasts and athletes. As fun as winter can be, many people struggle with the transition from warm weather and long, sunny days to cold weather and reduced hours of sunlight. Sometimes mistaken or misidentified as the “winter blues,” this phenomenon is known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD. What is seasonal affective disorder? According to the National Institutes of Mental Health, SAD is a type of depression. The NIH notes that a person must meet full criteria for major depression coinciding with specific seasons for at least two years to be diagnosed with SAD. The American Psychiatric Association says symptoms of SAD can be distressing and overwhelming and even interfere with daily functioning. The APA notes that SAD has been linked to a biochemical imbalance in the brain that’s prompted by shorter daylight hours and less sunlight in winter. As the seasons change, a shift in a person’s biological internal clock or circadian rhythm can lead to
them being out of step with their normal routines. That can contribute to various symptoms, including: • Feeling sad or depressed • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed • Changes in appetite, usually eating more and craving carbohydrates • Loss of energy or increased fatigue despite increased sleep hours • Increase in purposeless physical activity or slowed movements or speech that may be noticed by others • Feeling worthless or guilty • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions • Thoughts of death or suicide Overcoming SAD The weather can’t be changed, but people can speak with their physicians about the following strategies to overcome SAD. • Light therapy: According to the APA, light therapy involves sitting in front of a light therapy box that emits a very bright light. In the winter, patients typically sit in front of the box for 20 minutes each morning, and they may see some improvements within one to two weeks of beginning treatment. Light therapy is usually continued throughout the winter. • Medication: The APA notes that selective sero-
tonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, are a type of antidepressant that are sometimes prescribed to treat SAD. • Spending time outdoors: People with SAD who don’t typically spend much time
outdoors when the temperatures dip may notice their symptoms improve if they make a concerted effort to spend time outdoors in winter. • Rearrange rooms in the
home: The APA notes that rearranging rooms and furniture in a home or office to allow more natural light in during the daytime can help improve symptoms of SAD. SAD is a legitimate concern
for millions of people across the globe. Working with a physician to overcome SAD can help people successfully transition to days with fewer hours of sunlight.

Sparrow Eaton caregivers receive first doses of COVID-19 vaccine CHARLOTTE, MI – Sixty Sparrow Eaton Hospital caregivers received their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at 6 a.m. today, with 150 expected to be vaccinated by the end of the week. “We are incredibly proud to be able to offer this vaccine to our family of healthcare heroes, said Gisli Haraldsson, M.D., Sparrow Eaton’s Chief of Emergency Medicine. “This pandemic represented the darkest of days for many and put great strain on our caregivers and community members alike, both personally and professionally. To be among the first healthcare systems to receive the vaccine is a great privilege.” Sparrow Eaton, a subsidiary of Sparrow Health System, is encouraging all caregivers to get vaccinated. “We are actively responding to questions and sharing medical perspectives as a means to educate our caregivers, in hopes that we can see this pandemic come to an end. We are also working on plans to help our local community get the vaccine, too, as soon as enough is available,” said Tiffany Friar, Chief Nursing Officer of Sparrow Eaton. Sparrow Eaton caregivers are receiving the Moderna vaccine, a two-dose vaccination that is 94.5 percent effective at preventing
