Secretary of State offices collect 5 tons of food, more than $1,600 for Harvest Gathering
Donations distributed within local communities LANSING - Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced today that this year’s Harvest Gathering campaign at Secretary of State offices collected more than 10,200 pounds of food and more than $1,600. “I’m grateful to our customers and staff for generously contributing to their neighbors in need,” Benson said. “Our offices have been part of the Harvest Gathering program for many years and we are proud to join other organizations in this annual statewide effort to fight hunger in Michigan.” The Sparta branch office ranked first in food collection, bringing in more than 7,000 pounds of food. The Hastings office collected 541 pounds of food and the Petoskey office collected 127 pounds. Department of State staff in three Secretary of State buildings in Lansing raised more than $1,000. Collected items were distributed to local food banks. Harvest Gathering collection boxes were placed in Secretary of State offices and state office buildings during the fall food drive. Customers also mailed financial donations directly to the Food Bank Council of Michigan. The Secretary of State’s Office has participated in the Harvest Gathering campaign
since 1999. The campaign is coordinated by the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which supplies the state’s regional food banks through donations of food and money. The regional food banks serve food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in every Michigan county. Statewide, the 2019 Michigan Harvest Gathering campaign has collected more than $244,000 and thousands of pounds of food. LANSING – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson released a summary of 2019 accomplishments today that included advancing election security, increasing accessibility to voting, launching the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission application process, and enabling all customers with an appointment to conduct their business at any branch office in 30 minutes or less. “Michiganders deserve a Secretary of State who works as hard as they do, and throughout my first year in office we made significant progress in reflection of my laser focus on strengthening Michigan’s democracy and improving customer service in our offices,” Benson said. “In just one year, we met our goal of ensuring every resident has an opportunity to get in and out of a branch in under 30
minutes through our upgrade and expansion of appointments in every office. “We also implemented a number of reforms to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat. And we are just getting warmed up. Stay tuned for even more improvements in the years ahead, beginning with our work to make Michigan’s elections the most secure in the country.” Additionally, Benson remains committed to the long-term work of holistically addressing the problems she uncovered when visiting all 131 branches that have diminished the customer experience for years. When she took office, there were 100 fewer Secretary of State branch offices than in the 1980s, 40 percent fewer staff than in 2001, and many technology and data-tracking systems were severely out of date or broken.

Her accomplishments as Vice President of Patient Care Services and CNO include twice leading the SCH Nursing Team to ANCC Pathway to Excellence designation, and an increase in Nursing education and certification at Sparrow Clinton. Under her leadership, direct care Nurses have become bedside champions and informal leaders. In addition, her team has enhanced its use of best practices to ensure safe, compassionate quality care for Patients. “When we provide Patients with the care they deserve, we improve the quality of life for them and their families,” added

The DAISY Foundation is also the Founder of the DAISY Award, an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care given by Nurses every day. Benson announces Adam Reames as legislative policy director LANSING – Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson today announced that Adam Reames will serve as the Michigan Department of State’s legislative policy director starting Jan. 6. Reames has been the assistant secretary of the Michigan Senate for more than 10 years. “Adam’s years of experience and tremendous knowledge of the Legislature, combined with his passion for our work, will be of great benefit to our team,” said Benson. “The relationships and respect he’s built on both sides of the aisle will be a great asset as we continue to work with

the Legislature to strengthen Michigan’s democracy and modernize the way we serve and support the millions of Michiganders who do business with us each year.” At the Michigan Senate, Reames oversaw legislative procedures, training for new members and daily operations of the nonpartisan staff. Prior to that work, he held several policy and lobbying positions with organizations including Dykema Gossett, the Michigan House of Representatives, and the Michigan Department of Transportation. Reames also has a law degree from Wayne State University, a Master of
Public Policy degree from Claremont Graduate University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied political science. “I am excited to be joining Secretary Benson and her administration,” said Reames. “I look forward to putting my knowledge of the Legislature in support of the Secretary’s vision to benefit the citizens of Michigan.” Reames replaces Jonathan Brater as the department’s legislative policy director. Brater will take over as director of the Michigan Bureau of Elections on Jan. 2.
