Tips to ensure holiday road trips are safe and stress-free Holiday travel may required covering a long distance in a limited amount of time. Finding ways to be efficient in regard to time management can reduce stress and improve safety. After a 2020 holiday season in which the pandemic forced the postponement or cancellation of festivities, families are planning to get together once again in 2021. Many people will head home for the holidays this year, and the vast majority will take to the highway to do so. The U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics says the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s holiday

periods are among the busiest for long-distance travel. The highways will be busy with motorists criss-crossing the country to visit loved ones. Holiday travel may require covering a long distance in a limited amount of time. Finding ways to be efficient in regard to time management can reduce stress and improve safety. TRAVEL AT NIGHT If you can safely manage it, you may experience considerably less traffic in the evening hours than during other times of day. In addition, if kids are in tow, they may sleep much of the way, helping to reduce the number of times they ask, “Are we there yet?” Share driving responsibilities with another person so that each driver can take a break to prevent drowsy driving. GET A VEHICLE MAINTENANCE CHECK No one wants to get stranded on the side of the road with a car filled with gifts and treats. It’s well worth the investment to have a mechanic give a vehicle a checkup prior to leaving. Get an oil change even if it’s a little early to do so. Look at tire tread wear and ensure that you have the right tires for the road conditions where you’ll be headed. PLAN YOUR ROUTE People often rely on mobile phone or dashboard GPS systems to get where they need to go. However, it helps to have a general idea of the route so that if service drops out you can still find your way. Scout

out rest stops or acceptable restaurants online prior to leaving so you have a plan for making stops in safe areas. STOCK THE CAR While presents may be taking up valuable real estate, pack a cooler with snacks and beverages to help reduce how many times you need to get off the highway. Also, games or other forms of entertainment can keep children occupied on long trips. SLOW DOWN IN INCLEMENT WEATHER The holiday meal can be

reheated if you’re late, so don’t feel compelled to speed or drive erratically when the weather is stormy. It’s not worth the risk of getting into an accident that can cause serious injuries. Travelers United, a nonprofit organization that represents all travelers, also warns that quick storms that pop up after a long dry spell can immediately make road surfaces extremely slippery. Use caution. Planning and preparation are essential to getting home safely this holiday season.

Classic holiday films families can enjoy together The holiday season is steeped in tradition. Few traditions may elicit more collective belly laughs than holiday movie night, a tradition in millions of households across the globe. Families can consider these classic holiday films as they plan family movie night this holiday season. • “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947): This classic is centered around a man named “Kris Kringle” (Edmund Gwenn) who claims to be the real Santa

Claus after a successful stint as a department store Santa in midtown Manhattan. A trial to determine if Mr. Kringle is telling the truth soon follows. This

version of the tale has earned a 96 percent rating on the popular film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. • “A Christmas Story” (1983): Though it airs all day long on Christmas on the cable television network TBS, families can get a head-start on that marathon and watch the film uninterrupted whenever they choose. Families can laugh together as 9-year-old Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) hopes to unwrap his official Red Ryder BB gun on Christmas morning. The film, which boasts an 89 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, includes a memorable performance by Darren McGavin, who plays Ralphie’s father. • “Babes In Toyland” (1934): Also known as “March of the Wooden Soldiers,” this nearly century-old classic stars the legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy as two helpful tenants living in Mother Peep’s shoe in Toyland.

back to the 20th century. This animated tale tells the story of Arthur (voiced by James McAvoy), Santa’s youngest son who is thrust into the Christmas Eve • “How the Grinch Stole Christ- business of delivering presents mas” (1967): An animated when his father fails to deliver version of the Dr. Seuss classic, a present to one child out of this film has entertained scores the hundreds of millions of kids of children since it was first released more than 50 years ago. • “Holiday Inn” (1942): Hollywood legends Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire star in this classic that is perhaps most remembered for introducing the Irving Berlin class “White Christmas” to the masses. The film boasts a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has something for fans of song, dance and romance. • “Arthur Christmas” (2011): Not all Christmas films date

on his list. • “A Christmas Carol” (1951): Many holiday season celebrants cannot imagine letting a season go by without watching at least one adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale. The 1951 version is widely considered the

most faithful to Dickens’ 1843 novella that recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge. Alastair Sim stars as Scrooge, and many consider his performance the best of any actor to take a turn as the notorious 19th century miser.

Rep. Calley’s plan to improve local 911 services signed into law A new law initiated by state Rep. Julie Calley will modernize the state’s 911 system and ensure Michigan families can rely on it for many years to come. Without Calley’s legislation, the state law authorizing 911 to operate in Michigan would have expired at the end of this year. The fund that pays for the 911 network would dry up by 2024. “911 is too vital of a service. We obviously couldn’t just let it expire,” Calley said. “Not only do the reforms we made extend 911, we’re also taking steps to expand access to Next Generation 911 services so all Michigan families will have the protection offered by enhanced GPS locating and texting services.” House Bill 5026, now Public Act 126 of 2021, extends the Emergency 911 Enabling Act through 2027 and makes changes to ensure funding is available to continue transitioning every county in the state to modern equipment. Next Generation 911 service offers GPS location service to pinpoint the location of calls made from mobile phones, which now make up about 80 percent of the calls placed to 911. It also allows text messaging service for those who are unable to call, afraid to make noise, and people with speech or hearing im-

pairments. “The software and technology that’s now available to keep our families safe is truly incredible, but it’s not free,” Calley said. “We’ve made sure these important services are properly supported now and in the future.” Until now, 911 services were funded by a 25-cent monthly surcharge on all cell phone and land lines. Prepaid phones were charged a 5-percent fee at the time of purchase. Calley said the operational and maintenance costs of 911 services have remained on target with projections made in 2018, the last time the fees were re-evaluated. However, the revenue collected through service fees has fallen short – specifically the fees collected from prepaid cell phones. The new law makes a rate correction for prepaid cell phone lines, increasing the fees to 6 percent to make sure all users are paying their fair share. It also requires the state to conduct a review of prepaid fee revenue to determine why revenue has been lower than expected. Additionally, Calley’s measure ensures a roll back of service fees paid by residents if future revenue comes in higher than expected.

Johns, Michigan. He was born on April 17, 1928, in St. Johns, son of Louis Frederick and Mary Louise (Fernholz) Barker, both of whom preceded him in death. Marvin attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Pewamo and worked for many years for General Motors in their parts manufacturing division. Marvin exchanged vows with Sandra S. Shepard when they eloped to Indiana to get married. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and preparing the dogs for chasing raccoons and rabbits. On the way home from his and Sandra’s wedding, he noticed some pheasants in the field not far from the house, so he dropped Sandra off at home and hurried back to shoot dinner to take home for that evening. Marvin will be remembered as someone who loved to work with wood, tinkered with all sorts of things, and could fix anything that was broken. He attended SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia and after turning 70, became interested in singing gospel music and offered his deep baritone voice and his guitar playing “talents” to two groups, the Maple River Strummers, and the Country Folks, traveling with them to area nursing homes and other venues to sing and entertain. Marvin leaves behind his beloved wife, Sandra, his wife of 65 years; children, Phil (Sue) King of Cave Creek, AZ, Debbie (Bill) Wilson of Glendale, AZ, Karen (Mike) Towersy of Ionia, MI, Mark (Vickie) Barker of Muir, MI, Carol (Robert Wright) Roberts of Ionia, MI and Mike (Jeni) Barker of Belding, MI; grandchildren Matt, Nathan, Lisa, Mark, Kevin, Danny, David, Marcus, Brenton, Mike, Tyler and Jessica; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Jerome, Florian, Elmer, Ralph, Robert, and Alberta. Cremation Rites are being accorded and a Graveside service will take place in the spring at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Ionia. Sparrow had the top application in Michigan and was among 62 healthcare facilities nationwide that received funding by the

Federal Communications Commission in Round 2 of its COVID-19 Telehealth Program. The funding will support such things as video connections between Sparrow’s various sites, for example allowing a physician at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing to connect with a patient at Sparrow Ionia Hospital. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to health care has proven to be not only a national issue, but also a local issue, and it is imperative that every community is given the tools to access this care as safely and effectively as possible,” said FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. The boost in virtual care will better allow patients to stay local in line with Sparrow’s mission of keeping care close to home. For instance, instead of traveling from Sparrow Carson to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for a consultation, they could do it virtually and save the trip. VILLAGE MARKET of Muir White Christmas Snow-covered landscapes can make the holiday season that much more special. The beauty of such landscapes are captured in the song “White Christmas,” which was penned by Irving Berlin. No one is sure when Berlin actually composed the song, but it is widely believed he did so in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Just what compelled Berlin, who was Jewish, to write the song also remains a mystery. But “White Christmas” is one of the best-selling songs of all time — particularly after it was included in the musical “Holiday Inn” starring Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. The song earned Berlin an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1942. In the film, “White Christmas” was performed as a duet by crooner Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds, but Crosby’s solo recording is a time-honored classic that can always be heard during the holiday season.

Merry Christmas – and – Happy New Year to you and your family.

Seymour Furniture Downtown Ionia

“Christmas Time Is Here” is a song written for the 1965 television special “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” which was one of the first animated specials produced for network television in the United States. Along with singing carols and baking cookies, watching classic Christmas specials is part of many families’ holiday traditions. Two versions of the song appeared on the album that was released in conjunction with the TV special: an instrumental version by the Vince Guaraldi Trio as well as a vocal version sung by choristers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, Calif. “Christmas Time is Here” Christmas time is here Happiness and cheer Fun for all that children call Their favorite time of the year. Snowflakes in the air Carols everywhere Olden times and ancient rhymes Of love and dreams to share.

Highlights of the plan include: Early treatment in COVID cases: Treatments such as monoclonal antibodies often help lessen the severity of COVID cases and allow patients to recover more quickly. Studies suggest the drugs can reduce the risk of hospitalization or death for COVID-positive patients by up to 85 percent. Currently, delivery is bottlenecked at short-staffed hospitals – the House plan will expand delivery to eight additional sites across Michigan. Investment in buying and expanding deliv-

ery of the potential lifesaving drugs – and other medicines such as COVID treatment pills that are coming soon – will be up to $134 million. Priority must be given to high-risk individuals, and treatments must be offered free of charge.

“Monoclonal antibody treatments have proven to reduce hospitalizations and death from COVID,” Calley said. “In order to better protect Michigan, my goal is to make sure they are available to as many people as possible.”

Easing the health care worker shortage: With thousands of unfilled health care positions across the state, those still on the job are stretched too thin and need reinforcements. The House plan provides about $300 million for health care employee recruitment and retention and additional support for nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Keeping students in school and protecting residents: About $668 million would be provided for COVID testing overall, including $150 million for schools to buy COVID testing kits directly and allow the

state to stockpile additional tests for schools. Another $150 million is on track to be allocated to schools early next year. About $100 million would be provided for private employers to test unvaccinated workers. An additional $90 million would continue the state’s vaccination program. “We’re making sure our teachers, support staff and students have access to tests, so they’re able to stay in school,” Calley said. “Locally, schools are offering

a ‘test to stay’ program, and it has been fantastic. Instead of being isolated because they may have been exposed, students are able to test, wait 15 minutes, find out they were negative, then go into school and continue to learn.” The Michigan Legislature previously has appropriated more than $4 billion specifically for schools to address the pandemic. House Bill 5523 was approved by the House with bipartisan support.

“There’s no place like home for the holidays.” The popular Christmas tune says it best, and millions of people support that notion every year by heading back to their hometowns to spend the holidays with friends and family. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics points out that the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s holiday periods are some of the busiest times for long-distance travel. Around Thanksgiving, the number of trips to and from a destination 50 miles or more away increases by 54 percent. During the December holiday period, the number rises by 23 percent. When traveling for the holidays, suitcases and other baggage tends to be filled with gifts, decorations and other items like food. Packing for travel can become a little more complicated during this time of year. But these suggestions can help ensure holiday items make it there and back relatively easily. WRAP THEM THERE One way to preserve the integrity of holiday gifts and ensure they look attractive rather than crushed or ripped is to wrap items when you arrive. Build extra time into holiday travel so that you arrive a day or two early. Seek out a quiet spot and get your wrapping done. SHIP THERE OR BACK Depending on your mode of travel, there may be limited cargo space in the trunk or back of the SUV. Also, if you’re taking a long road trip that involves rest stops or even staying over at a hotel, gifts left in a vehicle may attract the attention of thieves. Lugging them into the hotel may not be practical, either. In addition, many airlines charge fees for extra baggage, which can quickly add up with bulky holiday gifts. Instead, ship gifts to their destination, trying to plan accordingly so

that someone will be there to receive them when they arrive. Pick a shipping rate that fits your budget. MAKE A “SMALL GIFT” PACT Speak with family members and agree to a set gift size (and/or dollar value). A theme, such as limiting gifts to gift cards, perfume/ cologne or food, can make this more manageable. Try to avoid delicate items which can break during transit. Small gifts are easily stashed in luggage or boxes to bring

home, saving everyone a little stress. REMOVE PACKAGING AND WRAPPING While they may not look as pristine as carefully wrapped boxes, wrap soft clothing items right in wrapping paper or tissue paper to save on space so gifts will take up less space. On the return trip home, break down clothing boxes and remove toys from their cardboard and plastic packaging to make them easier to transport.

BRING ALONG AN EMPTY PIECE OF LUGGAGE Much like on vacation, you’ll probably return home with a few more items than you arrived with during the holidays. Plan ahead with an empty piece of luggage for stowing the new gifts. Nest soft or foldable items into other gifts to save on space. Shirts rolled into shoes can save significant space. Millions of people travel for the holidays. A plan to get gifts to and fro can make trips go smoothly.
