† COLLEY Beulah Minnie Colley age 97 of Ionia, Mi passed away December 9, 2020. She was born on December 20, 1922 in Montcalm County, MI the daughter of Merle and Mabel (Collins) Steele. Beulah graduated from Ionia High School in 1941. As a teenager she enjoyed 4-H club sewing-canning and also enjoyed roller-skating. She married Floyd (Bill) Colley on June 19, 1943. She was proud to be a cub scout den mother and also the editor of the monthly newsletters for both the flat river and the horseless carriage club of Grand Rapids antique car clubs. She was a member of Golden Years Club, Flat River Antique Car Club, Grand Rapids Chapter of the Horseless Carriage Club and First Christian Church of Muir. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and White Shrine. Beulah worked for AC Spark Plug, Fisher Body of Lansing, Ionia Manufacturing, Gibsons in Belding. She also owned an upholstery shop that she operated for several years. Even re-upholstering their 1910 Buick and their 1922 Dodge seats and making new tops for both. She enjoyed antique car tours. She was a wonderful artist, poet and short story writer. Surviving Beulah are her daughters Janice (Dewey) Burke of South Carolina and Vicki (Lee) Jockheck of Ionia. Daughter-in-laws Deb Bronson of Florida, Clara Lewis of Perrinton and Cheri Geirman of Florida. 16 Grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Brother-in-law Howard Colley of Lyons. Sisters-in-law Gladys Heald of Orleans and Lela Deal of Belding. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also survived by Kirby her best friend and faithful companion. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Floyd, sons Floyd Colley and Philip Colley, brother Jack Steele, sisters Vera Carr, Elaine (Peggy) Steele, Joyce Lower, Evelyn Steele and Sue Herrick-Adgate. Services will be held at a later date at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to Beulah Colley Creative Art Scholarship. Sparrow to provide iPads for each inpatient room so patients can communicate with loved ones during pandemic LANSING, MI – As the holidays approach, Sparrow – through the generosity of a matching challenge grant from the Dart Foundation and support from donors like PNC Bank – is providing every inpatient room with an iPad so patients can communicate with their loved ones. The new equipment, which is being installed in over 600 rooms, will allow patients to stay in touch with their family and friends while visitor restrictions are in place during the pandemic. Sparrow leaders said they were mindful of how important the love and support of family and friends is to a patient’s recovery but they are also mindful of the continued need for social distancing and to limit who is allowed in our hospitals. Using Sparrow innovation and technology, the iPads will be installed in every inpatient room in each of Sparrow’s six hospitals, allowing video conferencing and use of our MyChart Bedside program. Sparrow officials lauded the outstanding community donors who made the project possible, led by $255,000 matching gift challenge grant from the Dart Foundation. “Their investments in programs and equipment and technology are really raising the bar on the level of care we provide every single day,” said Michelle Reynaert, Vice President, Sparrow Foundation. The Dart Foundation, which has donated over $1.3 million to the Sparrow Foundation since 1994, made a conscious

LANSING, MI –Sparrow Hospital has once again earned an “A” for patient safety in a recent scorecard of more than 2,600 acute care hospitals nationwide, reflecting the hospital’s commitment to quality and the needs of our patients. Prepared by The Leapfrog Group, the Fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grade rates a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The Safety Grade assigns an “A” through “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other harms to patients. Grades are assigned based on 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data. Rep. Calley continues work to improve state’s COVID-19 response State Rep. Julie Calley is spearheading an effort to address the needs of health care professionals and energy infrastructure workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Calley, of Portland, recently introduced the four-piece plan
to help improve the state’s pandemic response. “These are simple, common sense adjustments we can make to ensure critical industries, like our health care facilities and energy companies, continue to have a safe and healthy workforce
to meet the needs of Michigan families,” Calley said. The first measure, House Bill 6448, would make changes to Michigan’s COVID-19 liability laws to give energy workers flexibility needed to continue preforming critical jobs during the ongoing
pandemic. Calley said current laws would prevent energy employees from reporting to work for up to 14 days following contact with another individual who has or displays symptoms of the virus. “Energy companies employ highly skilled individuals who are not easily replaced when absent from work, and the quarantine requirement increases the risk of staffing falling short and critical energy infrastructure shutting down,” Calley said. “It’s imperative that our energy infrastructure remains operational throughout the pandemic, especially as winter arrives.” Her proposal would exempt critical energy workers from the mandatory quarantine pe-
riod, in limited circumstances, if the employees follow safety guidelines issued by the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. The other measures would help combat staffing shortages at health care facilities. HB 6493 would allow all staff members at health care facilities to assist with basic tasks like feeding and transporting patients. HBs 6494 and 6495 would temporarily extend deadlines for health professionals to complete continuing education requirements and license renewals during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This virus continues to put a tremendous amount of stress on our health care system and the medical professionals who dedicate their lives to caring for patients,” Calley said. “We can ease their burden by providing additional flexibility in these areas.” While the current legislative session is nearing its end, Calley said she is committed to continuing her work on the reforms in the coming weeks.

Portland District Library Lines Countdown to the Holidays with Portland District Library this year! Since we are unable to invite all our wonderful library patrons into the library for our annual Family Holiday Fun celebration, we have come up with a few unconventional ways to still bring the holiday cheer to you this season.
