– OBITUARIES –

† FERRIS Steven Duane Ferris, age 56, from Lyons, passed away peacefully surrounded by family December 3. He was born February 16, 1965, to Duane and Ardie (Jenks), had a passion for animals, the land and farming having grown up on the Ferris Brothers Dairy Farm by Lyons. After graduating from Michigan State University’s Animal Science Program, Steve chose beef cattle over dairy. He managed three different show cattle operations including one that took him to Canada where he met and married Sue (Dustow). Together they had two children before moving ‘home’ to settle on a small farm between Lyons and Ionia where they raise a small herd of Simmental Angus cross cattle. Steve worked off the farm as a self-employed animal feed hauler for ADM, Cargill, and Harvey Milling. He and partner Dan Jandernoa purchased the trailers from ADM and grew from the two to a group of twelve. When not working Steve believed in volunteerism at the Ionia Free Fair, as a large animal 4-h leader, club leader for Grand Valley Livestock, a woodshop resource for LeValley handcrafters, as well as president of the Ionia County Youth Meat Animal Sale for many years. He was quick to tease and to lend a hand to anyone in need. He especially enjoyed working with kids.

He is survived by wife Sue, son Shane and daughter in law Grace (Pearson) of Ionia along with daughter Cheyenne of Flint. His family also includes mom Ardie, brother Roger (Kelly Fletcher) and sister Linda (Dave Coon) all of Ionia, brother-in-law Steve Dustow from Ingersol, Ontario along with five nieces and nephews and five great nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his father Duane, his uncle Doug, and sister-in-law Lu Dustow.

The family plans to honor Steve at a Celebration of Life Ceremony in the spring. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home of Ionia.

Helen Evelyn Lamphere, age 90, of Ionia, passed away on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. Helen was born on November 4, 1931, in Sunfield MI, the daughter of Gaylen and Modena (Urie) Bliss. On September 4, 1951, she married the love of her life, Donald Lamphere, who preceded her in death in 1986.

Helen was an avid Rush Limbaugh fan.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Mary) Lamphere, Terry Lamphere and Mary (Doug) Moon; grandchildren, Marcie (Steve) Montgomery, Michael (Sarah) Lamphere, Misha (Chet Hesson) Lamphere, Brandy Vroman and C.J. (Carly) Vroman; 6 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Husband, sisters, Dorothy and Olive; grandson Matthan Lamphere and great grandson Roan Lamphere.

Jean Ann Mackey age 89 of Saranac passed away December 3, 2021. She was born March 25, 1932 the daughter of Carl and Mary (Goodenough) Houserman. Jean attended Saranac Community Schools graduating with the class of 1950. She went on to marry David Mackey July 11, 1953 in Saranac, he preceded her in death January 26, 2009.

Jean was a member of Saranac Community Church and the Red Hat Society. She loved bowling and playing cards.

Surviving Jean is her son Scott Mackey of Saranac. Granddaughter Sabrina (Matthew) Meyers of Saranac. Great granddaughter Zalia Mackey of Saranac. Several Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dave and Sister Joyce Kneale.

Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac, Friday, December 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Becky Poor officiating. Visitation will be on Friday 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Elara Hospice or the Saranac Fire Department. Paul E. Nickell Jr. age 72 of Grant, Michigan passed away December 2, 2021. He was born July 6, 1949 in Dayton, Ohio the son of Paul E. and Betty (Bradley) Nickell.

Paul is survived by his children; Megan Nickell of Florida, Kendra Nickell of Florida, Andrea (James) Dodson of California, Heather (Jacob) Rosengerber of Saranac, Amy Green of Florida and Robb (Sandy) Nickell of Ohio. Grandchildren; Alexis, Carter, Calvin, Adalyn, Autumn, Caiden, Kayleigh, Maggie, Gabe, Leilah and Cheyenne. Great grandchildren Izzy and Lucas.

Sister Debbie (Jerry) VanZant of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held at the Lake Funeral Home in Saranac, Sunday, December 5th at 1:00 pm. There will be a visitation from 11-1 on the day of the services.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Hosting Volunteer Info Session in Portland

Big Brothers Big Sisters Michigan Capital Region, in partnership with Epic Community Church, is inviting Ionia County residents to learn more about volunteer opportunities during a Community Meeting on Monday, January 10, 2022.

“Mentorship is an ordinary practice that can have an extraordinary impact,” says Big Brothers Big Sisters Development Director, Persis Sopariwala. “We are excited to strengthen our community partnerships within Ionia County, and would love to engage interested community members in meaningful volunteer service. If you have 2-4 hours per month and a heart for youth, you can make a big impact for our youth!”

Adds Epic Community Church Youth Pastor, Melanie Pierce, “I believe that the Big Brothers Big Sisters program is an essential next step in our community to ensure the health and wellness of our kids. It truly does take a village to raise a child. And I pray that the community of Portland, and Ionia County, will do as it always does – step up when there is a need.”

Within Big Brothers Big Sisters’ five-county service area, there are approximately 90 youth who are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister. In order to help these youth stay connected and supported, more adult volunteers are needed to serve as Bigs. Bigs are personally and thoughtfully matched with a Little in their community, can share the kinds of activities they already like to do, and are provided with ongoing mentorship support through the Big Brothers Big Sisters office.

Interested Ionia County residents are encouraged to attend the Community Meeting on Monday, January 10, 2022 at 6:30pm. The Community Meeting will be held at Epic Community Church (1455 E. Grand River Ave in Portland).
