What to do about headlight glare when driving at night

In recent years, many a mo torist has noticed how much more glare they encounter on the road at night than they used to. The headlights that are now standard in many vehicles can be a catch-22. Drivers of vehicles equipped with LED lights often find the road in front of them is much more illuminated thant it was in the days when auto manufacturers built cars and trucks with incandescent lights. However, the bright light emitted by LED head lights can increase glare for oncoming motorists, making the roads more dangerous for all.

Headlight glare has long been a problem for many drivers. In fact, as far back as 2001 the Highway Traffic and Safety Administration sought input from the public regarding headlight glare. A subsequent report noted that the issue compelled more responses than any other safety concern, and it's likely that a similar request would generate an even greater response today.

LED lights might be a problem for millions of mo torists, but the efficiency and longevity of these lights makes it unlikely that auto manufacturers will shift to an alternative light source anytime soon. Until that time comes, drivers can try these strategies to combat glare when driving at night.

· AVOID LOOKING DI RECTLY AT ONCOMING HEADLIGHTS. It's important that drivers keep their eyes on the road at all times, but they should be able to do so without staring directly at oncoming lights. In North America, where oncoming

traffic is always on the left, drivers can slightly shift their focus to the right as lights are oncoming. Doing so should allow them to keep their eyes on the road without staring directly into oncoming lights.

· PURCHASE NIGHT DRIV ING GLASSES. Drivers can consider night driving glasses if they're having a lot of trouble with glare. Such glasses differ depending on the manufacturer, but they're generally intended to reduce glare and reflections from headlights and street lamps.

· INVESTIGATE WIPER BLADES. Glare from on coming headlights contribute to visibility problems when driving at night, and old wiper blades can exacerbate those problems. Old wiper blades can be compromised by a buildup of dirt and often wear down over time. When coupled with glare, this can significantly reduce visibility at night. Each manufacturer is different, but Ford recom mends replacing wiper blades once every 12 months.

· CLEAN THE INTERIOR OF YOUR WINDSHIELD. A dirty windshield interior also can exacerbate glare. Grit and dirt build up inside of a vehicle over time, and they can accumulate on the wind shield just as easily as they do in a cup holder, on an armrest or on the dashboard. Various products are designed spe cifically for cleaning interior windshields, and these could help reduce glare at night.

Glare can make nighttime driving very difficult. For tunately, drivers can take many steps to reduce glare from oncoming headlights.

of the same name, whose author and illustrator, Chris Van Allsburg, is a Grand Rapids, MI native. There’s a SARANAC connection as well.

It was at the April 2018 “General Mem bership” meeting that the late Mark Williams (son of BSHS life members, Colin and Eleanor Williams) attended along with his wife, Adele, that I learned just how closely Mark had been with the restoration of the No. 1225 steam locomotive, and how his fa ther, Colin, had been instrumental in providing the means of moving MSU’s static display from outside the Spartan Stadium (Lansing, MI) to temporary housing back in the early 1980’s.

But back to the train… The Pere Marquette 1225 is a Berkshire 2-8-4 N-1 class steam locomotive built in 1941, that remained in use until 1951. Escaping the scrapper’s torch, No. 1225 was acquired by Michigan State University in 1957 and put on “static” display near the Spartan Stadium. It was while there, outside the stadium, that Chris Val Allsburg actually played on the train while attending MSU home football games with his father. No. 1225 remained on display until 1980 when MSU needed it moved, or dismantled. Moving the beloved train seemed best, but how? …since it was no longer operational.

A group of train enthusiasts, whose numbers included Mark and Colin Williams as well as several other Saranac residents, moved 1225 to a temporary site

before it was hauled (by a diesel engine) in 1983 to the former Ann Arbor Railroad steam backshop in Owosso, MI. NOTE: 1225 remains in Owosso and regularly runs seasonal trips to Ashley, MI as the “North Pole Express.”

It was in Owosso, that Mark and

the other volunteers spent thou sands of hours working on 1225, to get it up and running again. On November 30, 1985, the engine was restored and moved again under its own power for the first time since its retirement in 1951.

---- at least that is just a part of

its story, as I heard it. Follow us on Facebook ™ / Saranac Depot or check with the Saranac-Clarksville library for BSHS events: www.saraclark. michlibrary.org/community-cal endar#/events/

Portland District Library Lines

If you’ve gotten a new card at the Portland District Library in the past 18 – 24 months and tried to request something from another library, then you know that something has been amiss. Our computer systems weren’t communicating with their computer systems, and it created a huge mess that we’ve been working on since 2/21. I’m happy to report to you that the problem is finally fixed, and MelCat borrowing (getting materials from another library) is now

instantaneous and trouble-free! And moving forward, if you have books from another library, they will show up on your PDL library record along with the books you checked out from here . . . meaning you can see all the books you have and all your due dates in one place. The only thing you won’t be able to do on our (PDL) system is renew your MelCat books—you’ll still have to log into “MyMelCat” or ask us to renew those items for you. Please feel free to stop by or call if you want

more information about requesting materials from other libraries.

Recycle and reduce waste for the holidays

The holiday season is a special time of year. Individuals often spend a little more on gifts, indulge a little more on rich foods and treats and make a concerted effort to enjoy more time with their loved ones during the holidays.

The tendency to overdo things during the holiday season can create a lot of waste. In fact, Americans produce 25 percent more garbage from Thanksgiv ing through the end of the year, according to Waste Advantage magazine, a publication of the

waste and recycling industry. That uptick equates to one million tons of extra trash per week throughout the holidays.

Extra food, plastic and paper waste is generated this time of year, but people can be mindful of the potential to go overboard and take some steps to be more waste-conscious as they entertain.

· REUSE A SMALL PORTION OF WRAPPING PAPER OR LOOK FOR OTHER WRAP PING ITEMS. Sunday comics, newsprint, colorful magazine

pages, and even pieces of fabric can be used to wrap gifts in lieu of purchasing new wrapping paper. Otherwise, collect used wrapping paper and reuse it next year, doing the same with boxes and bows. According to researchers at Stanford Univer sity, if every American family wrapped just three presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields.

· SKIP DISPOSABLE PARTY ITEMS. It's certainly easy to use disposable plates, napkins and cups when hosting holiday parties, but that is very waste ful. Opt for durable, reusable products that can be packed away and used each year during holiday events.

· BUY DURABLE AND REUS ABLE ITEMS AS GIFTS. Avoid fad gifts and focus on items that will have staying power. Homemade gifts, such as foods, knitted scarves, artwork, and more, are generally eco-friendly.

· SET UP MARKED TRASH AND RECYCLING RECEP TACLES. Remind party guests to recycle the appropriate materials by clearly marking a pail designed for collecting re cyclables, such as cans, plastic beverage bottles and glass wine bottles. Most hard plastics can be recycled.

· SEND A PHOTO. Mail holiday card recipients photos of the kids or the entire family in lieu of cards. They're apt to save the

photos and display them, helping to keep even more paper trash out of landfills.

· RESEARCH NEW RECIPES FOR LEFTOVERS. With an abun dance of food remaining after entertaining, turn leftovers into new meals by exploring recipes from friends or by doing a little research online.

Waste can get out of control during the holidays, but there are ways to tame the excess.
