The numbers don’t lie. Locally owned businesses may be classified as “small,” but they have a big impact on the national economy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Business Employment Dynamics report, small businesses created 10.5 million net new jobs between 2000 and 2019, accounting for 65.1 percent of net new jobs created since 2000 in the United States. The Government of Canada reports that the number of small businesses in Canada in 2020 was far greater than the number of medium and large businesses, accounting for 97.9 percent of all the businesses in the country. Supporting locally owned businesses is a great way to support a neighbor, but that’s not the only attraction. Here are several reasons to shop small. THE FEEL-GOOD FACTOR Doing for others certainly has an impact on the person on the receiving end, but also benefits the do-gooders. A November 2020 survey by Union Bank found that 72 percent of Americans said supporting small businesses was more important than getting the best deals. That may be due to the feeling of helping out a fellow neighbor.
CREATE JOB OPPORTUNITIES Shopping at small businesses keeps those establishments afloat, and it also keeps their employees afloat. Small businesses are the largest employers in the United States. That’s also true in Canada, where 68.8 percent of the total labor force works for a small business. A person may never know when he or she — or a relative — will need a job. Keeping small businesses viable provides a strong job market for locals. KEEP MORE MONEY IN THE COMMUNITY The Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. Spend
the same $100 at a national retailer and only $14 stays. ENJOY A MORE LOCAL FLAVOR National retailers and other businesses follow a global business model that may not allow for much customization, but small businesses can provide products or services that relate directly to the needs of the communities they serve. These same small businesses also may be more inclined to work with local vendors and startups than national companies that have global supply chains. These are just a few of the many reasons to seek out small businesses when in need of products or services.

Baking is a holiday tradition in many households. The aroma of freshly baked cakes, pies and cookies wafts through the air of many homes this time of year, and that makes the holiday season even more special. Cookies are a tradition passed down through the ages. In medieval Europe, small, spiced cookies were exchanged as treats, and people still bake and share gingerbread cookies today. Cut cookies are some of the most popular cookies to make during the holiday season. Some families may have their share of favorite cookie cutter shapes and dough recipes. Certain techniques can make holiday baking sessions easier and ensure consistent results. • Work on a lightly floured, cool surface, such as a cutting board or stone counter top. Never work on a warm surface, which can cause dough to spread and stick. • Cookies cut most easily when the dough is chilled. Refrigerate the dough for as long as possible, ideally an hour or more — even overnight. The more chilled, the firmer the dough will be. • Dip cookie cutters into flour with each cut. Work from the center and move out to the edges when cutting out your designs. Try to maximize space and avoid scraps and rerolling. • Some expert bakers say that metal cookie cutters cut cleaner than plastic ones. Whichever cutter you use, cut the cookie by pressing straight down; try not to twist or jiggle the cookie cutter when using it. Doughs with a high

butter content can help, as the extra grease helps separate the dough from the cutters. • If cut cookies have gotten warmer, place them in the freezer for a few minutes to firm up again and then cook. This will guarantee the cookies will not spread or distort while baking. Extra steps may seem like they will take a lot of time. However, the extra effort and attention to detail will help produce cookies that win rave reviews.

Hay Auction Every Saturday at 10am Sharp! Thank you to everyone that bought and sold this last week!
Portland Library Lines Since we couldn’t have one big
night of holiday fun this year, we’ve decided to make each and every day in December sparkle just a little bit brighter with our month-long Family Holiday Fun! Stop at the library to pick a candy cane from one of our trees, ask for a surprise craft bag (both youth & adult!) with a new craft coming out each week, recommend a favorite holiday book or movie by adding it to our “Countdown to the Holidays” calendar, and sponsor a library staff member’s wish by selecting a keepsake ornament from our mini-tree. Patrons will also have three opportunities to win prizes! Complete the Snowflake Scavenger Hunt by December 21 for a chance to be entered into a special drawing (winners will be drawn Wednesday December 8, 15, and 22). And if your overdue fines put you on the library’s naughty list, come in anytime from December 20 until December 23 to participate in this year’s Fine Forgiveness Week! Frozen Finger Buster Warm up your hands and a loved one’s heart this chilly season by making TWO sets of no-sew hand warmers! All you need is an iron— we have included the rest of the supplies for you. Register now then come in starting December 9 to pick up your supplies. A video will be posted the same day of Shannon showing you what to do. Registration required, ages 16 and up. CHILDREN’S AND TEEN Page Turners Teen Book Club Page Turners' book selection for the winter quarter is “Be Not Far From Me.” It tells a harrowing story about Ashley's ability to survive alone in the Smoky Mountains after an injury
she sustained taking a nasty fall down a ravine. Pick up your free copy of the book at the Youth Desk beginning Wednesday, December 1. Space is limited to 10 teens, ages 13-18. Our meetings will be in person at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 18 and 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 22 in the Community Room. The icing on the cake for the second meeting is Mindy McGinnis, the Edgar Award winning author of “Be Not Far From Me,” will be joining us via Google Meet! Virtual STEM Club December’s Virtual STEM Club kicks off the winter season by teaching you to grow your own “snow” covered trees using heavy cardstock and laundry bluing. Registration for your Virtual STEM Club: Snowy Trees Takeand-Make bag begins December 15, which is the same day the video will be posted to YouTube. This program is recommended for ages 6-12, requires parental supervision, and is limited to 30 patrons. Barks for Books We are so excited to be able to continue offering Barks for Books this winter! We have two special time slots during December, then we’ll be back to our regular schedule in the new year. Young readers, ages 6-12, can sign up for 15-minute time slots to practice their reading skills aloud with a therapy trained dog, improving their communication skills while building their own self-confidence. Join Dixie on Thursday, December 9 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and December 23rd from 5:00-6:30 p.m. In January and February, Bodhi will be at the library every fourth Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 and Dixie every fourth Thursday from 5:00-6:30. Patrons must pre-register by calling 517-647-6981, be on time for their slot, and wear a mask.
