LANSING, MI – As Sparrow achieves another COVID-19 testing milestone, performing its 300,000th test, and expects a post-Thanksgiving uptick in demand, our experts are urging Mid-Michigan residents to choose the PCR nasopharyngeal swab because it is the most sensitive and accurate barometer of whether you have the virus. Sparrow has streamlined its testing process by allowing patients to use our “System Checker” and MySparrow portal to register for a test. The self-registration is so easy it can be done within a couple minutes. The MySparrow app registration and login is available at https:// mychart.sparrow.org/mychart. We are also expanding our testing capability to meet recent increases in demand and work toward a 1-2 day turnaround on results, far faster than most labs across the country. It took Sparrow only about six weeks to move from processing 200,000 tests to reach 300,000, and many are expecting those numbers to rise sharply in light of any concerns from gatherings during Thanksgiving week.

Sparrow continues to perform only the gold standard PCR nasopharyngeal swab test because less sensitive processes, such as the rapid antigen test, may have a greater false negative reading and are approved by the FDA only for symptomatic people within their first 5-12 days of symptoms. The risk of relying on these rapid tests, and increasing the likelihood of unwittingly spreading the virus in the community, is too great, especially since the PCR nasopharyngeal swab method is so readily available at Sparrow. Sparrow continues to offer tests to anyone who believes they need one and has been able to shorten the wait time for this gold standard process while still serving the needs of the community. Sparrow has been a national leader in COVID-19 testing, becoming one of the first hospitals in Michigan to offer tests for inpatients and using innovative processes to increase access and availability. Our Frandor drive-thru site alone has processed over 100,000 tests. Go to Sparrow.org/lab for more information.

– OBITUARIES –

† COOK Roy Jerome Cook, age 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 24, 2020, joining his wife of 67 years, Dee, who had passed away in May. Theirs was a marriage that exemplified the saying that you should never marry someone with whom you think you can live with, marry someone you can’t live without. Roy was born in Pewamo, Michigan on January 28, 1931 to Oscar and Dora Mary (Wolscheid) Cook, the 10th of their 13 children. He worked on the family farm, excelled at sports, and trapped, fished, and hunted during his time in Pewamo. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy, married the love of his life, Dolores Slater of Ionia, and was stationed in Key West, Florida. After completing his service, they moved back to Ionia where they raised their six children. For most of his career, he worked as an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance, and he was very active in the community, greatly enjoying his time in the Ionia Jaycees, the Knights of Columbus, and Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Roy was the ultimate outdoorsman, relishing his time hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, taking long walks in the woods, singing around the campfire, gardening, or mushroom hunting. Whether he was at Sunrise Lake, fishing in Canada, or hunting out West or around Ionia, Roy was in his element when he was enjoying nature. He didn’t just live life, he attacked it, squeezing every drop of love, laughter, fun, and friendship out of it that he could, taking his friends and family along for the ride and making them all the better for it. And above all else, he showed that family isn’t an important thing—it’s everything. Roy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Dolores (Slater) Cook, his siblings, Bernita (Walt) Fedewa, Isabelle (Don) Wilson, Angela (Joe) Coonrod, Dorothy (John) Golata, Ella (Alvin) Thelen, Cay (Jake) DeYoung, Marcia Cook, Donald Cook, David Cook, and his in-laws: Bob and Bonnie Slater, Bob & Marlene Hoppough, and Dave and Velma Ludwick. He is survived by his children: Caron and Keith Stetler of Lowell, Kris and Mike Tiemersma of Metairie, LA, Laurie and Kurt Tjalsma of Ionia, Janet and Dan Balice of Ionia, Phil and Chantal Cook of Zeeland, and Debbie and Joe Smith of Westphalia; his grandchildren: Collin Tiemersma and son, Colton; Justin (Beth) Tiemersma and children, Violet and Jude; Clair Tiemersma, Carlyn (Doug) Tjalsma Richards and daughter, Joelle; David Tjalsma; John and Leigh Balice; Tina (Zech) Cook Chester, Ryan (Jenny) Reidsma and children Landon and Ellie; Trevor Reidsma; and Mara, Brett and Logan Smith and 2 more great grandchildren on the way. He is also survived by his brothers, Jim (Jean) Cook, Leon (Jeannie) Cook, and his sister in law, Barbara Cook, all of Lansing, and his sister, Jenny Trier (RJ Weber) of Cincinnati. Roy and Dee’s last few years were spent at Green Acres in Ionia, where the staff took exceptional care of both of them, earning the family’s everlasting gratitude, and Ionia Area Hospice provided exceptional end of life care which was invaluable not only to Roy, but to those who loved him. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be made at http://www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com. † KEMP Kathy Jo Kemp aged 68 of Ionia passed away November 19, 2020 at home with her family. Mercado met with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 26, 2020, one day before his 97th birthday. He was a longtime resident and businessman in Ionia. Frank was born on November 27, 1923 in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of Jesus and Luisa (Maldonado) Mercado. He spent his youth in Chicago, IL. In 1936 his family moved to Alma, MI. There he attended Alma High School and graduated in 1943. He entered the Navy in 1942 and was in the Navy Seabees, Battalion 119 as a machinist mate second class. Grandchildren are, Erin Hollon, Todd Hollon, and Tyler Mercado, and step-granddaughter, Melanie Laffert. He also has a great-granddaughter, Kimberlyn Hollon-Morseau, and step-greatgrandsons, Will and Ross Laffert. Preceding him in death were his wife of 64 years, Rosaline and his son, Randy German. Frank will always be remembered as a kind, generous and caring man who loved his family. He will be sadly missed by many. Visitation will take place on Friday, December 11, 2020 at Ss. † SMITH Linda Marie Smith, 64, of Ionia, passed away Saturday, November 28 at Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids. On a freezing cold March 9, in 1956, a baby girl was born to Richard and Betty Northrup. Linda had a lazy eye, a cleft palate, and an indomitable spirit that destined her to overcome barriers. While the many corrective surgeries she had to endure left her with a dislike for healthcare, she learned it was important to help those who couldn’t help themselves. It also taught her that she did not like being on the receiving end of such assistance. She grew up surrounded by relatives, both the Northrups and her mother’s Lake family, which instilled in her a desire to take care of others. She helped care for children, helped in the family bakery, and in her teens decided to strike out on her own, ever the independent woman. She worked as a waitress and volunteered her time providing respite care for foster children. Linda graduated from Saranac High School in 1974, and continued to happily forge her own way, making lifelong friends, Joella and Sheila. On July 4, 1978, she had a date with a man that she wasn’t at all sure was suitable for her. Jack L. Smith, Jr. was in the military and frequently had to fly on a plane, something she despised, but his dogged persistence won her over. At the age of 23, she gave birth to her own baby girl, Kate, and decided to take Jack more seriously. They were married in November of that year. She moved from Lowell, MI to Fort Campbell, KY, then to Bad Kissigen, Germany, before finally spending 3 years in Fort Benning, GA. It was during this station that Jack was killed, and she went from military wife to military widow, a mantle she never took off. She decided to move back home to Michigan to raise her daughter closer to family. As a single mother, Linda worked to show her daughter that a woman can achieve anything she puts her mind to, but should always keep an eye out for the less fortunate. She worked at a bakery again, forming a sisterly bond with a coworker, Karen. This bond continued after she left for a few new jobs, eventually settling on work as an antiques dealer, where she met her dear friend, Vern. Many visitors to Flat River Antique Mall will remember her as the knowledgeable and quick-witted dealer at the register. During Kate’s first year at Michigan State, Linda’s parents passed away suddenly, and Linda took over care of her nieces. She had loved these girls since birth, and was able to raise them the same way she had raised Kate. Her girls loved having friends over, baking at the holidays, and yard saling in the summers to help supply “the booth”. Linda had a way of making memories out of the mundane, and for creating inside jokes that could cause uncontrollable laughter even years later. She was passionate about many things, but the women in her life and her love of them was utmost. We hope to live our lives as a tribute to who she was and who she taught us to be. She provided light, laughter, and love to everyone she met, and will be deeply missed by too many to name. She spoke her mind and followed her own path, fiercely stubborn from the beginning of her life until the end. She died surrounded by loved ones who held her hand, and cried as they told her how much they loved her. There will never be anyone like her, and the world is a darker place without her. Linda is survived by her beloved girls, Kate (John) Smith-Buckler and Jasmine Weitzel; her nephews Dylan and Aiden; her very best friends Joella (Don) Miller and Karen (Tom) Weeks, and numerous aunts, cousins, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, parents Richard and Betty (Lake) Northrup, and friends Sheila (Chris) Soyka and Vern (Bill) Sanders. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local animal shelter or women’s shelter. Cremation has taken place and there will be no services at this time. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com † VANVORST Laurie Marie VanVorst aged 74 of Ionia passed away November 9, 2020. She was born October 8, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan the daughter of Edward and Dolores Revitte. Laurie married Dale VanVorst July 24, 1971 in Kalamazoo MI where they (ironically) met at a marriage class at Western Michigan University. Laurie was a graduate of Western Michigan University where she received her bachelor’s degree. She was a teacher for many years and had many jobs in her life including grading MEAP tests later in her life. She loved Cats and Dogs and enjoyed volunteering at the Ionia County Animal Shelter in her free time. Laurie loved the beauty of the outdoors, nature, movies, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Surviving is her husband of 49 years Dale. Son’s; Nick VanVorst of Caledonia and Neil VanVorst of Ionia. Sister Susan Lorbeck of Portage. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Dolores Revitte and by her brother Thomas Revitte. Laurie will forever be missed by her friends and family. She left behind a beautiful poem she liked for everyone to enjoy: Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free, I’m following the path God laid for me. I took his hand when I heard his call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work, to play. Tasks left undone must stay that way, I’ve found that peace at the close of the day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss, Ah yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow, I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My Life’s been full, I savoured much, Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch, Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me, God wanted me now, He set me free. Arrangements in Care of Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. Online Condolences can be made at www. lakefuneralhomes.com.

Sparrow honored by Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce for COVID-19 innovation and response LANSING, MI – Sparrow has been honored with a Regional Growth Award from the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce for its innovation and support of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The honor was given during the virtual Celebration of Regional Growth Awards ceremony held Tuesday to recognize game-changing organizations and projects in the Lansing area. The Chamber specifically cited the innovative Sparrow Laboratories Drive-Thru Services site at Frandor and the overall work of Sparrow labs.

Sparrow has been a national leader in COVID-19 testing, becoming one of the first hospitals in Michigan to offer tests for inpatients and using innovative processes to increase access and availability. The Frandor drive-thru site alone has processed over 100,000 tests. Sparrow Health System President and CEO James F. Dover received the award, saying “we accept it on behalf of our extraordinary caregivers who have been on the frontlines of the pandemic.” “In times of challenge, ingenuity and excellence flow to the top and that’s what

We work together and trust each other to provide excellent service for each referral, and that brings a steady increase in referrals.” Kevin Kasper, owner of Sid’s Flower Shop in Ionia, says he’s had steady referrals. “There is no doubt we’ve benefitted from having Ionia Innovators’ referrals

in 2020,” Kasper said. “It’s a big part of our business, and it’s growing.” Enden added, “We are selective. We only allow one member in the group for each business category. That ensures a steady supply of referrals for that member.” Ionia Innovators was established in 2015. Many in the group have been networking together since 2002. The formula seems to be working: “We keep track of the dollar amount for the referrals passed to members in our group, and there has been virtually no drop-off in 2020,” Enden stated. Left-handed, lefty, southpaw — these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of left-handed people is creeping up. Left-handers are worthy of notice and recognition. As such, explore these interesting facts and figures about left-handers. Sports proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few of the many accomplished left-handed sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time con-

Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brain-related injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific Reports. Also, a study published in Laterality found that left-hand-

Families, friends, healthcare professionals and law enforcement also play important roles in the lives of aging drivers, especially when the time comes to transition from driving to non-driving. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson encouraged Michigan residents to celebrate the week by taking this opportunity to learn more about the topics related to aging and driving on the state’s Safe Driver Smart Options website at Michigan.gov/AgingDriver. “Our aging driver website is an excellent resource for older drivers, their families and the professionals who care for them,” Benson said. “I encourage everyone to visit the Safe Drivers Smart Options website to learn more about keeping an aging family member safe, active and mobile.” Beginning Dec. 7, residents are invited to explore a different topic each day with their family, friends, and professionals in their community: Monday, Dec. 7: Anticipating Changes That Can Affect Driving Tuesday, Dec. 8: Family Conversations Wednesday, Dec.9: Screening and Evaluations with an Occupational Therapist Thursday, Dec. 10: Interventions That Can Empower Drivers Friday, Dec. 11: Staying Engaged in the Community With or Without a Car The website provides accessible information and resources for drivers, their families and the professionals who work with them. Visitors to the website will discover: Older driver self-assessment driving tools and videos Links to driver refresher

courses and other community supports for older drivers Information about how medications and health problems may affect driving and lists of resources available to drivers once they stop driving Strategies for initiating conversations about when and how to transition to a non-driving lifestyle Procedures for referring an unsafe driver for a driver reexamination Information about the aspects of aging and how best to interact with older residents for audiences such as law enforcement, healthcare, and other professionals “We are all aging and some day will have to make the transition away from driving,’” Benson said. “Much of the stress and worry during this process can be relieved through planning and knowing what resources are available in your community.” Recognized for excellence by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the Safe Drivers Smart Options website was developed through a collaboration of public and private agencies as a much-needed strategy to promote safety and mobility for Michigan's aging adults. For more information and resources about aging drivers, visit the Safe Drivers Smart Options website.

State Rep. Julie Calley of Portland today issued the following statement as the Michigan House prepares to take up several measures to address COVID-19: “My colleagues and I are deeply committed to protecting the people we serve, and we have been since the very first day this virus was identified in Michigan. The needs of our first responders, health care workers and frontline employees are ever-changing, and it’s incredibly important to make sure they have the right tools in place, so they can serve our communities well. We’re moving forward with several measures that will provide relief in the coming weeks, and I’m hopeful the governor will partner with us to get them across the finish line.” BAILEY’S SEWING MACHINE REPAIR - 4849 N.
