† RUTZ Jack Charles Rutz age 73 of Saranac passed away after a courageous battle with Cancer. He was born July 8, 1947 in Sheridan the son of Charles “Bud” and Verda “Betty” (Shindorf) Rutz.

Jack married Charlett Robinson August 6, 1966 in Saranac. Together they raised 4 children and many foster children over their years together. Jack worked at General Motors in Lansing for 32 ½ years until retiring at the age of 48. He bred, raised, trained and hunted Coon Dogs for many years having much success, 3-way Grand Night Champion “Ace” and 2 World Champions “Bubba” and “Curly”.

Jack was a member of the Wolverine Coon Hunters Club. He collected knives, enjoyed flea markets and garage sales. Jack was an avid U of M fan and NASCAR fan especially Rusty Wallace.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 54 years Charlett Rutz of Saranac.

Children; Tracy (Rob) Bussa of Clarksville, Kelli (Rich) Melcher of Saranac, Ron C. Rutz of Lowell and Annie (Greg) Koomen of Grand Rapids. Daughter in law Kim Rutz of Ionia. Grandchildren; Tiffany (Tyler) Quillan, Kelsea Melcher, Jared Melcher, Kyrsten Rutz, Levi Koomen, Brooklyn Koomen, Cody Bussa, Katie Lower and Maddie Bussa. † KEMP Kathy Jo Kemp aged 68 of Ionia passed away November 19, 2020 at home with her family. She was born January 28, 1952 in Ionia the daughter of Francis and Marion (Croel) Pritchard.

Kathy married Robert Kemp July 12, 1969 in Lyons. Together they raised three children.

She worked for Amway for 38 years in their finance department.

Kathy enjoyed traveling overseas for work and with her family. She was a fan of dirt track racing, NASCAR and boxing. Kathy loved scrapbooking and the U of M Wolverines.

Surviving are her loving husband of 51 years Robert Kemp of Ionia.

Children; Gregory (Lori) Kemp of Ionia, Amy (James) Starkey of Ann Arbor and Jennifer (Sheri) Kemp of Florida. Grandchildren; Lyndsie (Shane) Cole, Melanie (Madhu) Sabbu, Ty (Megan) Weber, Logan (Shanon) Curtis, Liam Curtis, Brooke Kemp, Caleb Kemp, Tiffany King and CJ King. Portland District Library Lines As the entire world has worked to figure out how to maneuver the day-to-day in the middle of a pandemic, all of us at the Portland District Library have appreciated the support we’ve gotten from our community. Whether it was kind words on a difficult day, or just making use of the materials we offer, your patronage has made all of our hard work worthwhile. And while we want to continue to offer unlimited service to the public, the recent spike in Portland cases coupled with warnings from both the CDC and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services necessitated a move to curbside delivery and computer access by appointment. We will plan on offering only these services from November 23 through December 9. There will still be staff in the library, working for you, so feel free to call us with any questions or library needs. And our we’ll still be doing virtual programming, so keep an eye out for our exciting winter programs!

back and going virtual this Fall!

Teens ages 13-18 can stop at the Youth Desk to register and receive their Take-and-Make bag, which includes all of the supplies needed for the month’s project.

This month we are exploring the art of Blackout Poetry. We will be using old book pages and a few markers to create beautiful works of art. Since we are going virtual this Fall, library staff want to make sure we can still connect with patrons to find out how their projects are coming along. We will be using Padlet to share photo updates and talk about how the project is going.
