Gifts and gatherings take center stage come the holiday season. The holiday season begins on Thanksgiving and continues until New Year’s Day. During that time, families gather to exchange gifts, break bread, celebrate their faith, and toast the year to come.
The good times and gatherings that are such a big part of the holiday season were absent from many celebrations in 2020. Though the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, the successful rollout of various vaccines should make the coming holiday season feel more normal.
That means gift exchanges and gatherings are back in play. Savvy celebrants recognize the benefits of shopping early, and Small Business Saturday is a great chance to get back in the holiday swing of things while supporting the local businesses that make communities so unique.
Plan ahead. Small Business Saturday takes place each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving in the United States. Since its inception in 2010, Small Business Saturday has grown in popularity. American Express estimates that
110 million people participated in Small Business Saturday in 2019, which underscores how shoppers can benefit from planning ahead.
Research sales and inventories of local businesses you want to support so you’re ready to go come Saturday morning. Doing your homework can make it easier to navigate the crowds.
· Reserve a table at your favorite restaurant. A great meal with friends and family can be an ideal way to cap off a day of shopping, and it’s a great way to support a local restaurant. It’s worth noting that a National Today survey of 1,000 shoppers that focused on Small Business Saturday shopping habits found that food and groceries were the most popular things to buy local. Saturday is traditionally a popular night to dine out, and that popularity is even greater on Small Business Saturday. Shoppers can ensure they aren’t waiting for a table by booking a reservation in advance.
· Grab your Shopper’s Guide to find coupons and sale dates to all your favorite local shops!
· Check your social media feeds. Many small businesses have recognized the value of communicating directly with consumers through their social media feeds. Throughout the day, shoppers can keep an eye on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to learn about special sales or events. In addition, shoppers can share their shopping experiences via their own feeds. Many small businesses rely on word-of-mouth from existing customers, so this can be another way to show your support for the establishments that call your community home.
Small Business Saturday is a great way to begin the holiday shopping season on the right foot.

Small businesses continue to be the backbone of the North American business community. According to the career resource Zippia, there are 33.2 million small businesses in the United States. Those
organizations employ around 62 million people. The financial wellness company Fortunly says that small businesses account for nearly half of all private sector jobs in Canada. In fact, small employer businesses
made up 98.1 percent of all businesses in Canada in 2021.
Despite the prevalence of small businesses and the abundance of people willing to become entrepreneurs, 20 percent of these firms fail within the
first year, and only 55 percent survive five years or more, says Zippia. The COVID-19 pandemic was particularly harsh on small businesses. However, many of them survived through digitization that they plan to continue to utilize even when the pandemic is long gone. Maintaining a small business through economic highs and lows and other issues often comes down to customer involvement. Consumers are the driving forces behind the success of small businesses. Here are some effective ways for consumers to help small businesses grow.
• SHOP LOCAL. The “Shop Local” movement has been around for awhile but remains as relevant as ever. Shopping local means becoming repeat patrons at the independent businesses that comprise Main Street as opposed to the chain stores that dominate strip malls.
• SHARE ON SOCIAL. Social media can be a great way to spread the word about businesses you like and point out particular examples why you shop there. Utilizing social media platforms to highlight the positive attributes of a business can help that business grow.
• Call direct for take-out orders. Those ubiquitous third-party food delivery services may be convenient, but businesses have to share the profit from your purchase with the delivery service, cutting into their bottom lines. Pick up your order or rely on the restaurants’ own delivery teams.
• ENGAGE WITH THE BUSINESS ONLINE. Complicated algorithms and other factors determine how a business’ website or social media page gets seen by the public. You can help things along by liking pages, visiting the website frequently and sharing any posts.
• SPEAK ABOUT A BUSINESS IN PERSON. When out and about, whether you’re dining
with friends or chatting with a stranger, try to push and recommend businesses you support. If someone compliments your lawn, shoes or haircut, mention the businesses that did the work or sold you the products.
• SUGGEST OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPOSURE. If you know about a school or organization
looking for vendors, make the suggestion to a small business you use frequently. They may get new customers from participating in the event. Small businesses are driving forces in the economy. Consumers can do their part to keep them thriving and profitable. TF22C498

THE BEGINNING
It’s 2010, and small businesses are hurting from an economy in recession.
In an effort to support local shops that make our communities strong, American Express launches Small Business Saturday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to Shop Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses.
NATIONWIDE MOMENTUM
One year later, as the Shop Small Movement gains momentum, local officials across the nation take notice and promote Small Business Saturday.
In 2011, the Senate unanimously passes a resolution in support of the day and officials in all 50 states participate. It even gets a shout-out from the president of the United States and the mayor of New York City.
“Helping small businesses thrive is the biggest thing we can do to put our economy back on track. And that’s because small businesses are the economic engines to our neighborhoods.”
—Michael Bloomberg
LOCAL SUPPORT
In 2013, more than 1,400 individuals and organizations sign up as Neighborhood Champions to rally their communities with events and activities on Small Business Saturday — and that number continues to grow.
By 2017, there were more than 7,200 Neighborhood Champions across all 50 states. They’re not

alone. Beginning in 2011, business associations, nonprofit trade groups, municipalities, and public officials started to unite by forming a Small Business Saturday Coalition, encouraging everyone to Shop Small. And nearly 100 corporations lend their official support to the movement.
90% of consumers surveyed said Small Business Saturday has had a positive impact on their community.
MAKING AN IMPACT
Since Small Business Saturday started, U.S. customers have reported spending an estimated total of $85 billion at independent retailers and restaurants — that’s $85 billion over 8 days alone.
ALL FOR SMALL
As Shopping Small catches on in communities everywhere, Small Business Saturday goes from a cause to a day of community celebration.
Small Business Saturday continues to be an annual holiday shopping tradition — just one part of the larger Shop Small Movement to support small businesses every day and everywhere. Because a visit to the family-owned framing shop or a stop at the neighborhood taco truck not only supports our local economies, but also promotes thriving communities.

THE MOVEMENT
SHOP LOCALLY ON PLAID FRIDAY & SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY
What better ways to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year?
Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland, Calif., several years ago in an effort to encourage holiday shoppers to slow down and shop locally at small businesses rather than partake in the frenzy of the traditional Black Friday rush at big box retailers. Similarly, Small Business Saturday® was founded by American Express in 2010 as a community-centric day to support local businesses. Small Business Saturday was the catalyst for the generalized Shop Small® movement, which encourages consumers to patronize small businesses.
Local businesses are at the heart of their communities. In a 2015 survey by the Urban and Land Institute, researchers found that more than half of respondents said they wanted a neighborhood where they wouldn’t need a car very often. More than 40 percent specifically noted the desirability of local shopping and entertaining as main features. A neighborhood with a Main Street or thriving local shopping hub can be a big draw. Consumers make these neighborhoods a reality.
Every time they grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighborhood artist or dine at a family-run restaurant, shoppers are supporting local business owners and strengthening their communities. Here are some ways to make shopping small a priority this holiday season.
• TAKE INVENTORY OF PLAID FRIDAY AND SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY SALES BY KEEPING UP ON LOCAL SOCIAL MEDIA. Build holiday shopping lists around the offerings at local businesses.
• DINE OUT AT LOCAL RESTAURANTS OR SHOP SMALLER FOOD MERCHANTS.
• VISIT A LOCAL TREE FARM. When decorating for the holidays, support the farm or local nursery that grows Christmas trees and makes their own wreaths and garlands.
• KEEP YOUR MONEY IN YOUR COMMUNITY AT A LOCAL BANK OR CREDIT UNION rather than a large national bank. Local banks may have special promotions to boost savings for holiday gifting. The holiday season is the perfect time to support small, local businesses. TF21B508

which means a significant amount of the money spent at local businesses is ultimately going to the community at large. In addition, local businesses tend to hire local residents, who pay taxes on their incomes. Those taxes also benefit the towns and cities where workers
live and work. This ripple effect of supporting local businesses is one reason why the Small Business Adminstration estimates that, for every $100 consumers spend at a small business, $48 remains in the community. TF22C505

Innovative Sparrow Medical Assistant Apprenticeship program addresses growing need
LANSING, MI – Sparrow is giving community members and its own caregivers a fast-track option into the growing field of medical assistants with its newest class of apprentices through Lansing Community College.
Sparrow has launched its fifth innovative 24-week Medical Assistant Apprenticeship class, which provides one-on-one, hands-on instruction by Spar row’s highly skilled caregivers. Sparrow covers the entire cost of the program, including tuition, books, scrubs, and wages during clinical hours.
Sparrow and the healthcare industry are in desper ate need of medical assistants, multi-skilled professionals who often work at physician offices
and help prepare patients to see their doctors.
This new class includes eight students who successfully met the testing requirements and have committed to serving as a Sparrow Medical Assistant for two years after graduation in March 2023. While the ap prenticeship program began in January 2018, this is the first class to conduct all its clinical work at Sparrow Medical Group clinics instead of the classroom, and 26 Sparrow caregivers have volunteered to train the future healthcare workers.
Sparrow is working hard to address the need for medical as sistants. To date, 53 graduates of the program currently work for Sparrow. However, there are still
roughly 50 open MA positions across the health system.
“This is the future and com panies must think about how to grow their own,” said Sherry Pfaff-Doody, Talent Acquisition Director of Sparrow Health System. “That is exactly what Sparrow Health System has been doing for the last five years with the Medical Assistant Apprentice program as well as our other trainee programs – building our future at Sparrow Health System.”
