† BAEGER Jane Bernadette Baeger of Ionia, formerly of Lansing. Born August 11, 1928 in Lansing, Michigan daughter of the late Henry and Hazel Gunther passed away Friday, November 4, 2022 at age 94.

Surviving are her daughters, Pamela Bettelyoun and Kristine Norris; many stepchildren and step-grandchildren; brother, Donald (Ellen) Gunther along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by husband, Otto Baeger; brothers, Jack and Robert Gunther; and sisters, Audrey Mcgee and Maryann Bradley.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 4444 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing.

Those who wish may make memorial contributions, in memory of Jane, to the Lansing Eastern High School Library. Arrangements are by the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Online condolences may be left for her family at www.EstesLeadley.com.

† COURTNAY Kimberly Ann Courtnay age 68 of Ionia passed away November 6, 2022. She was born June 27, 1954 in Ionia the daughter of Stanley D. and Joan R. (Peabody) Thomas. Kim attended Ionia Public Schools graduating with the Class of 1972. She married Greg Courtnay June 16, 1973 in Ionia, together raising two sons.

Kim worked for Ionia County in several positions, ending with Probate Court after 43 years of service. She loved to collect rocks, do ceramics, macramé and make stained glass art. Kim was very resourceful, even sewing clothing for her and Greg. She loved her flower garden and her pond that she designed herself with the help of her husband. Kim was an avid reader and Candle Maker “Kim’s Candles”.

She is survived by her loving husband Greg Courtnay of Ionia. Sons; Joseph (Nadine) Courtnay of Grandville and Andrew (Bethany) Courtnay of Howell. Granddaughters; Kensington, Lexington and Arathelle. Brother; Marc (Karen) Thomas of Greenville. Sister; Laura (Dave) Vroman of Ionia. She was preceded in death by her Parents.

Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services were held at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation was Wednesday 4-7 p.m. at the Funeral Home. † GREGORY Audra Elizabeth Gregory age 95 of Ionia passed away November 8, 2022. She was born July 3, 1927 in Saranac the daughter of Lorenzo and Maria (Osball) Newman. Audra married William Gregory in 1959 he preceded her in death in 1983. She loved having Yard Sales. She is survived by her son Kenneth (Victoria) Tingley of Grand Rapids. Nine Grandchildren and Eleven Great Grandchildren.

Audra was preceded in death by her parents, husband William, Daughter Sharon Taylor, Sons Dennis Tingley, Duane Tingley and Jerry Tingley, sister Edna and brother Lorenzo Newman Jr. Funeral Services were held at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia Friday, November 11, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. with Chaplain Sarah Esquivel officiating. Interment to follow at North Plains Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. † PARRISH Rosalyn Joan “Rose” Parrish, age 91, of Ionia passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. The daughter of Guy & Hilda (Smith) McCoy, she was born on August 22, 1931 in Ionia County. Rosalyn graduated in 1949 from Ionia High School. She worked at Chrysler in Lyons MI until it closed, then retired from the American Sunroof Company in 1994. Rose is described by many as “the best” – mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She loved spending time with her family, was a passionate Skip-Bo player, and was always happy when the cards were dealt in her favor. Rose will be forever missed by her family; her beloved children, Emily and Tom Alcala, Karen and Tom Reiger, and Guy Parrish; her grandchildren, Sonny Alcala, Tammy and Buddy Cudney, Maria and Phil Sinclair, Tommy and Joël Reiger, Heather Reiger, Rebecca and Nathan Hohenstein, Ryan and Rebecca Alcala, Bryan and Tiffany Alcala; her great-grandchildren, Jadah and Medaisa Alcala, Cole and Callie Cudney, Bailey, Aiden, Evin, and Sylis Sinclair, Elizabeth Reiger, Finnigan, Gabriel, and Quinn Hohenstein, Ryann Alcala, Kaiden Gala tian, Parker and Jayden Hanchett, and great-great grandchild, Keira Sinclair. Plus many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Hilda McCoy, her siblings, William and Doris McCoy, Rita and James Weitzel, Evelyn Parrish, and her great grandson, Riley Sinclair.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 2-5 p.m. at “Just Like Home” (330 Fourth St., Ionia).

a mill race, and a small mill. And so, it began - leading to other mills operating in the community, powered by Lake Creek’s surrounding mill pond and flats.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE a road (or railroad) can make to how things can turn out for two (2) up and coming communities: Waterville and Saranac… but let’s go back to the early 1830’s… the beginning.

When Judge Morrison first looked into buying land for development, it was a sound business idea to plan for industry. In the 1800’s, that meant mills and mills needed water ways for power. “Lake Creek”, running between Morrison Lake and the Grand River suited that purpose. It was not uncommon for mill sites, and the land they sat on, to be donated to early settlers. Such was the case in 1836 when Cyrian Hooker of Oakland County received a donation of land if he would build a sawmill. Shortly there after, Jerry Stocking also of Oakland County came to the area thinking of starting a furniture factory. Hooker agreed to give his water power if Stocking would build

Waterville Mill, located south of Saranac, was built on Lake Creek in 1838 and ground buckwheat flour and grist for farm ers. The first own er was J.J. Hoag, while Charles Stutz was the last to run the mill. The building still stands and is located on MacArthur Road at Morrison Lake Road. Also built in 1838, just west of the Waterville Mill, stands what was once a “Stagecoach Inn.” By 1850, this road was one of three (or more) routes of stage lines operated from Grand Rapids to Lansing, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo. It was with high hopes that the community of “Waterville” would become a thriving village once the roadway it

sat on was declared the main turnpike from Kalamazoo to Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, plans carried the (Grand Riv er) turnpike eastward of the Waterville location.

Twenty years into the future, 1858, and the completion of the Grand Trunk Rail road through the Village of Saranac sealed Waterville’s future. With the arrival of the railroad service to Saranac,

the beginning of a whole new life started for the previously struggling little village. ---- or at least that is just a part of the story, as I understand it.
