† LOCKHART Glennis Rae Lockhart went to be with the Lord Jesus while she was a patient at Henry Ford Allegience Hospital in Jackson, on Monday, November 2, 2020. Glennis was born to Ward and Doris Conner on August 30, 1943. She was preceeded in death by her parents, brothers Richard and Roger, sister Patricia Frazer, her daughter Hope and her son Frederick. She is survived by her daughter Susan Beasley (Eddie), son Dennis (Becky), brother Michael (Melody), sister Debbie Detar, seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Glennis loved horses, Days of Our Lives, word finds, corny jokes and country music, particularly Alan Jackson. For the last two years of her life she was a resident of the Jackson Friendly Home for Elderly Women and was faithfully cared for by JFH staff and her daughter Susan. At her request Glennis has been cremated and no service will be held.

† SEYMOUR Diane Lynne Seymour aged 64 of Ionia passed away November 5, 2020. She was born November 9, 1955 in Ionia, Michigan the daughter of Jerry and Elaine (Peabody) Cook.

Diane married Jim Seymour September 3, 1983 on Mackinac Island. She worked at Ionia Public Schools until retiring after 25 years. Diane loved spending time with family and friends as well as being outdoors taking care of her gardens. She was known for her cooking and loved sharing recipes. Diane’s focus in life was family and taking care of others.

Survived by her loving husband of 37 years Jim Seymour of Ionia. Son Jas (Jenny) Seymour of Ionia. Father Jerry Cook of Orleans. Siblings; Barb Hausserman of Ionia, Carol (Ron) Starks of Ionia, Debbie (Ron) Brownell of Muir, Angie (Bill) Mentzer of Wisconsin and Nancy Cook of Ionia. Grand dog Harleigh. Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother Elaine.

There will be a visitation for Diane on Sunday, November 8 from Noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. Private Services will be held on Monday. In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial contributions to Ionia Community Awareness. She was born February 21, 1939 in Marion Township, Ohio, the daughter of Randolph and Betty Jane (Manns) Patrick. Shelva married Charles Smith April 29, 1999, he preceded her in death in 2013.

She was a past member of Shiloh Community Church. Shelva was an excellent cook, loved playing Yahtzee with her sisters, and was a terrific Euchre player. Delores, Dorothy and Shelva were known as the “Snoop Sisters”.

Surviving are her children from first husband, Marvin Haney; Brenda (Chris) Hill of Ionia, Marvin Michael Haney of Ionia, Herman Daniel (Jackie) Haney of Orleans, Timothy Randolph (Tracie) Haney of Ionia and Tricia (Samuel) Montero of Ionia. Grandchildren; Shaun (Katie) Slayton, Keith Slayton (Bobbi Stencel), Shannon (Michael) Armock, Andrew (Ashley) Slayton, Chad (Rachael) Haney, Brittney (Randle) David, Dylan Michael Haney, Angela Haney (Arturo Torres), Christine (Chava) Haney-Galeno, Kyle (Nikki) Haney, Timothy (Cassandra) Haney, Dillon Haney (Taylor Erickson), Brooke (Joe) Moore, Jamie (Morgan) Montero and Marissa (Travis) Montero-Grace. 26 great grandchildren. Siblings; Dorothy Risner of Lowell, Donald (Barb) Patrick of Ionia, Delores (Dennis) Spitzley of Ionia, Lawrence (Shirley) Patrick of Clarksville and JoAnn (Dennis) Ervin of Ionia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Marvin Haney and Sister Jewell Ritenburg.

Funeral Services for Shelva will be held at Shiloh Community Church, Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Noon with Pastor Kenneth Harger officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 11a.m. until the time of services, luncheon to immediately follow. Interment Rest Haven Memory Gardens in Belding at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. † RANSOM Larry B. Ransom, age 72 of Ionia, Michigan passed into heaven peacefully on Friday, October 30, 2020. Larry was born February 27, 1948 to Lenabelle (née Motcheck) and Kenneth Ransom in Ionia, Michigan.

Larry went to St. John’s Lutheran School for his elementary education and graduated from Ionia High School, class of 1966. He served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1969. Larry received a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Expert Marksmanship M-14 Badge.

Larry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sheila (née Schulz), sons, Mike (Heather) of Lowell, Michigan, Paul (Nikki) of Macomb, Michigan and John of Macomb, Michigan, grandchildren, Dusten, Miah, Danica, Giada, Rocco, Ophelia and grandbaby to be, and great-granddaughter Piper, sisters, Dawne (Ken) Metzger of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Lynette (Denny) Seiler of Portland, Michigan and Michelle (Russell) Posey of Copper Center, Alaska, his many loving cousins, nieces and nephews, godchildren, Tiffany (Michael) Novak and Lukas (Monica) Buxton, his Ruehs Garage customers and family, and also his special little brothers, Ken (Windy) Badder and Michael (Tina) Hooper.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Lenabelle Vanbrakel, father, Kenneth Ransom, step-father, Philip Vanbrakel and nephew Anthony Angelo Ramos.

Larry loved camping, especially with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Drag Racer winning his last race at US131 Motorsports Park at the age of 70. Larry had over 250 different types of daylilies that he had begun to sell through his Woodstone Daylily Company.

Larry loved and knew that he was loved by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ . He would want everyone to know that the only true freedom you will ever have is the freedom that was bought by the death and resurrection of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins. And that peace which passes all human understanding will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus until life everlasting.

A private burial will take place with a celebration of Larry’s life next summer. Memorials may be made to Lansing Area Emmaus and Ionia Area Hospice.

While the debts to service members may never be the kind that can be repaid in full, paying tribute to veterans, on Veteran’s Day and throughout the year, can be a great way to show them just how much their efforts are appreciated.

VETERAN’S DAY BEGINS WITH ARMISTICE DAY Veteran’s Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were

held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938.

However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veteran’s Day”to honor veterans of all wars.

VETERAN’S DAY IN OCTOBER? According to Military.com, for a short time, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veteran’s Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veteran’s Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Since then, parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts, and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.

Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day also is called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty.

PAYING TRIBUTE There are various ways to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades, and visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11.

Veteran’s Day and its sister holidays mark the honoring of veterans of all wars, with a particular focus on living veterans. It is a day to celebrate the dedication and selflessness of hardworking military men and women.
