† FITZGERALD Margaret Fitzgerald, 91, passed away October 19, 2021. She was born De-

cember 2, 1929. On November 15, 1951, she married Robert Fitzgerald. Together they raised 5 children: Carolyn (Loren) Riker of Ionia; Peggy Hill of Lansing; Robin Suomi of Falls Church, VA; Mike (Laura) Fitzgerald of Fenwick; Carrie (David) Webster of Clayton, NC. Her grandchildren are Tina, Scott, Justin, Jared, Matt, Michaela, Lee, Erin, Ethan and Abby; great-grandchildren are Shana, Dakota, Austin, Emmett, Collins, Harper, Logan, Aubrey, Katie, Korver, Mila, Saige, Ty, Brynn, Ellie, Gabbie and Naomi; great-great-grandchildren are Kenadie and Kaiden and Lexie and Chloe; brother, Frank Fishell; several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Robert Fitzgerald; her parents, Lloyd and Neva Fishell; her siblings, Vivian Lake, Pat (Vere) and Howard Fishell; her nieces and a nephew, Darlene Eaves, Beverly Wall and Arden Lake; and her grandchildren, Ross Fitzgerald and Kevin Buskirk.

Throughout her life, Margaret was very active in her community. She served as 4-H leader for 24 years in the areas of cooking, gardening, sewing and horticulture, and as Secretary and Treasurer of the Palo Cemetery Association for 24 years. Margaret was a devoted VFW Auxiliary member for 59 years, spending 51 of those years as a member of the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary 5065 in various leadership roles. She was well-known for her Bingo support for 50 years, supporting Bingo on Tuesday and Friday nights, and the Ionia Free Fair Bingo annually. She served two terms as Sheridan VFW Auxiliary President, and earned All State Auxiliary President in 1992-93. She also served one term as District 9 VFW Auxiliary President of Michigan, tying for 3rd place honors within a field of 133 Michigan auxiliaries. Last of all, Margaret was a Foster Grandparent in Ionia County, and was awarded Grandma of the Year in 2014-2015. Margaret was the oldest resident of the Village of Palo.

Funeral Services were held on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 11 AM with Pastor Melissa Wagner officiating at Hurst Funeral Home Greenville.

Burial took place in Palo Cemetery. The funeral service is available to be viewed via www.hurstfh.com. Memorial contributions may be given to: Ionia County Toys for Tots; Palo Cemetery Association; or Sheridan VFW Auxiliary Post 5065 for the purchase for new Bingo equipment.

† REEDER Clark E. Reeder age 89 of Ionia passed away October 23, 2021. He was born June 14, 1932 in Ionia, the son of Robert L. and Oletha Mae (Johnson) Reeder. Clark married JoEllen Costello April 20, 1952 in Ionia. She preceded him in death December 25, 2015 after 63 years of marriage.

Clark farmed all his life and was a member of various organizations related to farming, Ionia Chapter of FFA receiving his State Farmer Degree, past member of Michigan Milk Producers and life member of Farm Bureau. He was a member of LeValley United Methodist Church. He was a past member of Pheasants Forever. Clark accomplished receiving a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying whenever possible. He loved hunting, including trips out west and enjoyed collecting Native American Artifacts.

Surviving Clark are his children; Holly Ingvartsen of Ionia, Merry (Tim) McNally of Ionia, Dan (Maureen) Reeder of Ionia and Kelly (Bill) Carlton of Portland. Grandchildren; Lenny, Corey and Andy Ingvartsen of Ionia, Aimee (Marc) Fennell of Grand Rapids, Tiffany (Jason) Seiler of Portland, Rob (Jess) Reeder of Ionia, Kate (Eric) Einstein of San Diego, CA, Caleb (Jaima Beth) Carlton of Knoxville, TN and Bryce (Brynlee) Carlton of Alto. Great grandchildren; Kyrsten, Cody, Hailey, Remi Sue, Spencer, Nathan, Tyler, Abigail, Kelsey, William, Owen, Sadie, Mica and Maple. Great great granddaughter Sophie. Sister Lois Eddy of Missouri. Visitation will be at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia Thursday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Lansing-Ionia Area Hospice or LeValley United Methodist Church. Rep. Calley, Michigan House approve plan to protect vulnerable children from abuse State Rep. Julie Calley and the Michigan House today approved a plan to strengthen penalties for criminals convicted of abusing vulnerable children, especially those who are nonverbal.

Calley, who sponsored part of the plan, said state law currently addresses crimes against vulnerable adults, but lacks enhanced protections for vulnerable children.

“Children who are nonverbal often don’t have a way to protect themselves or disclose those who abuse them,” Calley said. “We must do more to protect these precious children from abusers, and make sure our law enforcement officers have the proper tools so that the punishment fits the crime if such misconduct occurs.”

House Bills 4071-72 allow a charge of second-degree child abuse if the

offender was performing duties in a regulated facility or home, or while the offender was acting within the health profession. Anyone under 18 who is nonverbal would qualify as a

vulnerable child under the proposal.

After receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in the House, the plan now advances to the Senate for further consideration.
