† FLETCHER Richard James Fletcher, age 72, of Muir, passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021. Richard was born on December 7, 1948 in Ionia, MI, the son of Raymond and Marion (Wright) Fletcher. He was a member of the Walter T. Roach American Legion Post 182 in Hubbardston. He enjoyed farming, cooking and baking, gardening and being outdoors. He served In Korea during the Vietnam Conflict. Richard is survived by his daughter, Ellen Arden of Atlanta, GA; siblings, Gerald (Donna) Fletcher of Lake City, Sharon (Lewis) Hagle of Eagle, Philip (Linda) Fletcher of Muir, Mark (Kay) Fletcher of Muir, Kathleen (Fred) Hearld of Fenwick; sister-in-law, Mary Fletcher of Muir and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Rita Frayer; brothers, Roger Fletcher, Ronald Fletcher and Terrance Fletcher; and God parents, Gordon and Donna Piggot. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 AM on Monday, October 18, 2021 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston with a luncheon to follow. Rite of Committal to follow at St. John’s the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with a Rosary at 4:30. Those wishing can make memorial contributions to the American Kidney Fund, the American Legion post 182 or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was born on May 14, 1929 in Keene Twp, the daughter of Carl and Caroline (Kirby) Peck. Gloria married Auburn Hubbard, he preceded her in death in 2004. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University and later earned a Master’s degree in Special Education and Educational Administration from Michigan State University. Gloria’s teaching career started in a one room school. Her work in Saranac Community Schools included fourth grade teacher, special education teacher in both elementary and high school, high school assistant principal and athletic director. Her final job was middle school principal. Gloria was very involved in the Saranac Promise. She was a member
of Saranac Historical Society. Surviving Gloria are her children, Donald Hubbard of Ionia and Kim Hubbard and Fiancé Jan McEnroe of Schoolcraft; grandchildren, Jonathan Hubbard of Portage, Jared (Alex) Hubbard of California and Joseph Hubbard of California; step-grandchildren, Craig (Joan) Britton of White Hall, Jim (Tim) Britton of Kentwood, Janice (Troy) Huhtala of Green Bay and Shana (Scott) Kopsi of Bruce Crossings, MI; great grandchildren, Cyrus Hubbard and Roya Hubbard of Portage and special friend, Donna Dausman of Saranac. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Auburn, daughter-in-law Suzanne Hubbard, brother Clarence Peck and sister Rosemary Stafford. There will be private services. State Rep. Julie Calley today announced Saranac has been awarded a state grant to help maintain the village’s water infrastructure. The $158,240 grant will allow the village to update its water asset management plan by reviewing and assessing current resources while ensuring the services provided meet residents’ needs now and in the future. “This grant will help Saranac maintain its community water system and ensure local families continue to have access to clean, safe and affordable drinking water,” Calley said. “I’m pleased we were able to secure this money to invest in the future of the local water system. I applaud the village for pursuing this enhancement opportunity.” As part of the project, the village plans to conduct field verification for a minimum of 102 service lines. This includes hydro-excavation of curb stops, investigation of five corporation stop connections, and in-building documentation of service line materials. Calley said the grant is part of a
$37.5 million clean water initiative approved by the Legislature in 2019 and distributed by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.
