She is survived by her 9 children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

† BLUNDY Gerald “Jerry” Blundy peacefully went to be with our Lord on October 1, 2022. He was born on November 16, 1935, in Pewamo, Michigan, to parents Sylvester and Pauline (Rockey) Blundy. Above all, Jerry loved his wife, Joan (Hoppes) Blundy. Their story began when they met in 1954, and they were married on February 9, 1957. They shared over 65 years of love and life and were blessed with three children—Daniel, David, and DeeAnn. Jerry lived a life full of passion for his faith, his family, his friends, and his farm. Alongside his brother-in-law, Bob Hoppes, they founded and owned the Blundy-Hoppes Tire and Auto Clinic for over 25 years before passing the business on to the next generation—David Blundy and Gary Hoppes. Jerry was a devout Catholic who served his community as an active member of the Ionia Knights of Columbus (Council #944), and was the 1973 Grand Knight, as well as being a member of the Ionia Jaycees and the TPA. Alongside faithfully serving his community and church, Jerry found fulfillment in his friends, whether it be the “Friday night group,” his Grand Rapids friends, his fishing buddies, his friend group from wintering in Texas, or his customer community. Jerry loved playing cards, fishing and hunting, cutting wood, having a few drinks, or simply visiting with those he loved. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Matthew, William, and Ronald; sister Dolores (Frances) Thelen; and brothers-in-law Pirl White, and Bob Hoppes. He is survived by his loving wife Joan (Hoppes) Blundy; children Daniel (Carol Dickinson) Blundy, David (Carol Beck) Blundy, and DeeAnn (David) Badder; grandchildren Marilee (Aaron) Faist, Lydia Kramer and Ryan MacWilliams, Becca (Ryan) Thomas, Jarrod (Jordan Moore) Blundy, Emma Cummings and Zane Zakora, Nic Blundy and Grace Achatz, Charlie Cummings, Stacey Schafer, Brady Badder, and Nicholas Badder; great grandchildren Ian and Morgan Faist, Jackson and Olivia Thomas, and Selena Zakora; sisters Marie White, and Arlene (Calvin) Stanton; sisters-in-law Elaine Dorin, Barb Diamond, Carmen Hoppes, and Pat Blundy. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and a very dear group of friends. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. A visitation was held on Thursday, October 6, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Lake Funeral Home (3521 S State Rd, Ionia, Michigan).
A funeral mass was held at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church (434 High St, Ionia, Michigan) on Friday, October 7, 2022 at 11:00 AM with a luncheon immediately following the mass at the Steele Street Hall/Gregory’s Tavern (115 S Steele St, Ionia, Michigan). A private interment will be held at a later date.
The family appreciates all the thoughts, prayers and support from their friends, extended family, and healthcare providers (especially Michelle Pabst). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saints Peter & Paul Catholic School in Ionia.

† KRYWANSKI
Hazel Elizabeth Krywanski, age 96, passed away peacefully on October 2nd, 2022 and joins her beloved husband Gerald who preceded her in death on November 25th 2012.
Hazel was born in Mina, South Dakota to Fred and Minnie Bugner and along with her brother Fred and sister Amelia experienced a childhood on a small farm on the South Dakota prairie that few of us can imagine. As a little girl she drove a team of horses to haul water back to her family’s primitive farmhouse which had no well, electricity or plumbing. After her mother’s death, her father moved the family from the farm to Long Beach, California where she finished school and soon after met her future husband and love of her life, Gerald, a young sailor fresh from a tour of duty in the South Pacific during WWII.
After the war, Hazel and Jerry moved back to Ionia where they built their home themselves and started a family. Hazel was a working mother, first with the Ionia city clerk’s office and later with the Michigan Department of Corrections. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Ionia and in recent years attended Zion Methodist Church. She attended many of the activities at the Ionia County Commission on Aging and volunteered at the Senior Center. She and Jerry greatly enjoyed their summers on their boat, the Haz-E-Lady, and made many friends at the marina and on their many cruises. They were also avid campers and enjoyed wintering in Florida.
In addition to her husband, Hazel was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Calkins in July 2020 and son-in-law Dale Petersen in December 2017. She is survived by her son Michael (Polly) Krywanski, daughter Bonnie Petersen and son-in-law Robert Calkins. Grandchildren Amy Calkins, Lesley Calkins, Kelsey (Ryan) Dreyer and Courtney Petersen; great-grandchildren Henry, Charley and Oliver Dreyer.
Hazel spent the last 22 months of her life at Hathaway Hills Assisted Living facility in Greenville where she was given the most loving and compassionate care that she and her family could hope for. There is no question that her life was greatly enriched by the many wonderful staff members at Hathaway who went above and beyond to make her difficult final months more comfortable. Visitation will be at Lake Funeral Home at 11:00AM on Monday October 10th followed immediately by the funeral service at 1:00PM. There will be a private interment at Balcom Cemetery for family members after the funeral service. Those wishing to make a memorial donation may do so to the Ionia County Commission on Aging or a charity of their own choice. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com

CONNIE AND PAT – two preteen girls sitting in front of Pat’s family piano in the parlor of the family farmhouse in Berlin Township, plunking out the latest popular
tune on the keyboard. The year? Sometime in the late 1940’s. With only a couple of learned chords and more will than talent, they were just having fun.
The real star of this scenario, the piano. It was fast approach ing 90 years in the 1940’s, but today is over 150 years old. Aside from its age, there are a couple of other things that make it noteworthy.
Sometimes referred to as a “box grand”, the rosewood and mahogany “square grand piano” is an earlier form of piano that is built in a rectangular shaped cabinet, sitting on four legs, with its strings running left to right. During the 18th and 19th centuries, more square grand pianos were built and sold in the US and Europe than any other types of pianos combined.
This particular piano, now housed in the Saranac Depot Museum, originated in Syra cuse, NY, and made its way to Berlin Township in 1859 by way of the Erie Canal, across Lake Erie to Detroit and from that point traveled by ox-cart over land to the Hartwell farmstead. The piano, and this now ses qui-centennial farm, has passed down through daughters from Daniel Hartwell, Phebe (Hart well) Benedict, Lyla (Benedict) Lowrey, Beatrice (Lowrey) Fed ewa, who with Clayton Lowrey, donated (in the late 1990’s) this family treasure to your Boston Saranac Historical Society.
Follow us on Facebook ™ / Saranac Depot or check with the Saranac-Clarksville library for BSHS events: www.saraclark. michlibrary.org/community-cal endar#/events/ Our next major event? The annual “Craft Show” at the Saranac High School –Saturday, November 5th, 9am to 3pm in the (front) gym.
NOTICE: We recently received
an unsigned note with some additional information regarding the Saranac “Bridgefest.” In the August 2022 article, we had stated that the Saranac Com munity Association’s “Bridge fest” had been held, “Every year for decades now…” The anonymous writer volunteered that the first one was in 1986. (Good to know.)
The writer also felt it important that we mention that as well as the bridge over the Grand River,
“there was more than 1 bridge ‘out’.” No further details as to which bridge(s) and/or dates was provided but our thanks
for not only their readership, but their willingness to add to the “story.” Thank you for your interest. - BSHS
Sports is often credited with bringing people together. That tendency to connect people from different walks of life is even more noticeable when sports is combined with food.
Food and sports go hand in hand. Food is never too far away when getting together with fellow fans. That’s true if fans are hosting a game watch at home or if they’re tailgating in a stadium parking lot. Certain styles of food are synonymous with sports, and that includes grilled and smoked items. Smoking has become particularly popular among sports fans in recent
years, and many modern smokers are now portable enough that they can be taken on the road when following a favorite team.
Gameday can be the perfect time to master the art of smok ing. Smoking can take a long time, which makes it an ideal option for day-long tailgates or game watch parties. Fans who have volunteered for cooking duties this season can impress guests with their smoking skills by following this recipe for “Texas-Style Beef Brisket” from “The Essential Kamado Grill Cookbook” (Rockridge Press) by Will Budiaman.
Serves
to 8
1 8- to 10-lb. beef brisket
3 tablespoons kosher salt
3 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper
Dry-brining time: Overnight
Prep time: 15 to 30 minutes
Cook time: 7 hours, 30 minutes to 9 hours, 30 minutes; plus 1 to 2 hours to rest
Grill temperature: 250 F to 275 F Smoking wood: Oak or pecan
1. Trim off any hard fat from the brisket and square off the edges. Trim the fat cap down to an even 1⁄4-inch thickness. Sprinkle evenly on all sides with the salt and pepper. Refrigerate overnight.
2. Prepare the grill for smoking at 250 F to 275 F.
3. Place the brisket fat-side up on the grate over the drip pan. Close the lid. If desired, wrap in aluminum foil after 5 to 6 hours or once the bark (crust) is dark brown.
4. Turn over the brisket, close the lid, and continue cooking for 2 hours, 30 minutes to 3 hours, 30 minutes more or until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers 200 F.
5. Rest the brisket, wrapped in foil, for 1 to 2 hours before serving. Cut across the grain into 1⁄4-inch-thick slices. Pour over as much of the drippings from the pan as you like, and serve.
Cooking tip: The grain in each part of the brisket — it’s made up of two different muscles, known as the flat and the point — runs in two different directions. Roughly speaking, the grain in the point runs perpendicular to the grain in the flat, so you’ll want to slice the two sections separately. DE21B461
