To receive the award, Sparrow has demonstrated sustained achievement for two consecutive years and has performed at the top level of standards, based on specific performance measures. “What this means to the community is that Sparrow Hospital is consistently following proven guideline-driven strategies, and heart attack patients are receiving the best medical care attainable anywhere in this country,” said Christopher D’Haem, D.O., cardiologist and Sparrow Heart and Vascular Medical Director. “Something like this can only happen with sustained effort and commitment from all levels within the Sparrow organization. From the medical
professionals who render care, to the administrative support team, our community can be proud of what these people have accomplished on their behalf.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control estimates that almost 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks flood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling, and cardiac rehabilitation, among others. The Chest Pain – MI Registry promotes healthcare providers consistently treating heart at-
tack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety, and outcomes for Patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack Patients. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is combined with Computed Tomography (CT) to provide a multi-dimensional image and specific information about how organs and cells are functioning. Cancer patients benefit greatly from these scans as it allows doctors to detect the disease and track its progression. “When you are faced with a cancer diagnosis, you want to be sure you have access to the services you need to make the best decision possible about treatment. Caregivers are trained to perform and interpret the exams, and do so
with caring and compassion,” stated Linda Reetz, MBA, BSN, RN, NE-C, President, Sparrow Ionia Hospital. “Patients now no longer need to travel outside of Ionia County to have a PET scan. We are pleased to offer this as part of our diagnostic services, close to home.” PET/CT scans are also useful for several other medical disciplines, such as cardiology and urology. “The ability to offer PET scans at Sparrow Ionia Hospital is a great addition to our other diagnostic imaging services, particularly for our oncology patients,” said Blain Pierce, Sparrow Ionia Diagnostic Imaging Manager. “As a diagnostic tool, it provides precise information to help patients and their physicians determine the next best step in treatment.” Patients should ask their physicians for a referral to Sparrow Ionia if a PET scan is needed.

† COCHRUN Roger J. Cochrun of Saranac, MI passed
away September 17 at the age of 94. He was born February 17, 1926, to John and Edith (Chamberlain) Cochrun in Berlin Township, Michigan. Roger married the love of his life Doris in October of 1947 and together they shared 72 beautiful years. They were always young at heart together and their love story started with mutual adoration and fondness, both which only grew through the years. He was a man deeply devoted to faith, country, family and community. Shortly after graduating from Lake Odessa High School, he was drafted to serve in World War II. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he was extremely proud to have served his country as a combat soldier under General Patton in France and Germany. He was a Bronze Star recipient and several lifelong friendships were forged during his time in the United States Army. While in Europe, he corresponded with Doris, who wrote him a letter every day. The two were wed shortly after he returned from the war. Together they built a beautiful life; family was the cornerstone. Whenever together, he was known to sing, “hey, hey the gang’s all here” along with his signature soft shoe dance move; the pure delight in spending time with those he loved was felt by those in his presence. His grandchildren were the apple of his eye, and the feeling was mutual. He was generous with the word love and even more generous with the action. Roger and Doris traveled extensively in retirement. They made it to all 50 states, with Alaska and Dollywood a favorite for both. They also looked forward to their annual trip to Port Huron with the grandkids. Roger spent the majority of his working years as a pressman at McCarty Communications in Saranac. His boss, Emerson McCarty, became his best friend and the two families remain close to this day. Roger was a very active part of the community: he was a proud, long-time member of the American Legion, served on the Village Council, coached Little League Baseball, and was a charter member of the Saranac Lions Club. Anyone who knew Roger would agree that his favorite hobby was talking to anyone...at any location...on any subject matter...at any time. He enjoyed pranks, some of which backfired on him, but those times just meant another reason to laugh. He had a natural curiosity and love for people, and never met a stranger. Roger is survived by Linda (Jeffrey) Caudell of Ionia, MI and Ron (Dianne) Cochrun of Saranac, MI. He was grandpa to Scott (Kara) Caudell of Bridgman, MI, Mark Caudell of Nairobi, Kenya, Angie (Matt) Hamlet of Baltimore, MD and Laura Cochrun of Washington, DC. He was a proud great grandfather to Hannah Caudell and Anderson Hamlet. He is also survived by his dear sister-in-law Joyce Walter of Saranac, MI and many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. Preceding Roger in death were his beloved wife, parents and sisters Dorothy and Ruth. A family only memorial service to celebrate the life and legacy of both Roger and Doris will be livestreamed via Lake Funeral Home Inc’s Facebook page and via Zoom at 11 AM on October 23. The public is welcome to interment in Saranac Cemetery following at 12:30pm. Arrangements are cared for by Lake Funeral Home in Saranac. Those wishing to make memorial contributions may do so to Saranac Community Church, where he was an active longtime member, or the Veterans Home in Grand Rapids. Michigan State University Extension will offer the Beginning Grazing School online this year. The eight-week course is designed for beginning farmers and livestock owners who graze dairy, beef, and small ruminant animals and want the latest animal and forage research on grazing management. Anyone who grazes will benefit from this course featuring MSU specialist and educators who focus on grazing and forage management. The event will be held 7-8:30 pm each Tuesday and Thursday in October. October 6: Introduction to school and overview of grazing terms October 8: Graziers are Grass Farmers! October 13: Soil Health and Fertility

MSU Extension recognizes strain on families EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University Extension recognizes the COVID-19 pandemic and other associated factors have put a financial strain on many families. Therefore, MSU Extension has waived the Michigan 4-H participation fee of $20 per person or $60 per family for the 2020-21 4-H program year which began September 1, 2020. Some events may continue to have registration fees, but no participation fees will be collected or expected for general 4-H participation. Participation in 4-H will open opportunities for youth to be involved in all local, regional and state 4-H events, including the possible Ionia County Free Fair! In fact, most people have had a brush with the spooky—mysterious voices, apparitions seen from the corner of the eye, things moving on their own. Email us a video at epock@ portlandmilibrary.com telling of your experiences with the supernatural, and we’ll compile all the stories into one Hometown Hauntings video and share them on Halloween. Check out our Spooky Reads for inspiration! Gilded Insects October is the month to highlight your creepiest décor, and what makes your skin crawl more than bugs? Register for this take-and-make craft project, and create your own gilded bug to hang on the wall. Registration will run until October 19, with the supply bags available from October 20 – 31. An instructional video will be posted on the library’s YouTube channel on October 26, so you can do the actual craft on your own time. Ages 15 and up. CHILDREN’S AND TEEN Calling all Busy Bees and Book Cubs! The Portland District Library and Ionia Great Start Collaborative are bringing you the “Talking is Teaching” Fall Scavenger Hunt. We have ex-
tended the hunt until Saturday, October 31st. This month-long outdoor scavenger hunt is part of our new virtual storytimes and will encourage families to locate “Talking is Teaching” theme clings in the windows of Portland businesses. We want to continue to emphasize the importance of talking, reading, singing, and playing from birth, as these early connections are the foundation for healthy relationships and future successes. Families that are interested in participating can pick up a scavenger hunt sheet at the Youth Desk starting September 8th and turn them back in by Saturday, October 31st to receive a special “Talking is Teaching” themed prize! Celebrate Halloween with Portland District Library: Portland District Library is trying something new this October with Spooky Reads, an all-ages video series featuring picture book favorites, scary stories that make your spine tingle, and downright terrifying tales of horror. Each Friday in October the library will be premiering three videos: Storytime Edition: picture book favorites, Chiller Edition: ages 8+, and Horror Edition: ages 16+. Each video will feature a collection of stories read by familiar staff faces dressed to impress for Halloween. Portland District Library is here to help you decorate for Halloween this year with Haunted Crafting. Crafters, ages 6-12, will have two opportunities to make fun festive décor to last throughout the season. Registration to create spooky spidery dream catchers starts on Tuesday, October 6 and lighted luminaries will be available on Tuesday, October 20. Upon registration, crafters will receive a Take-and-Make Bag with all the supplies necessary to complete each project and they can follow along on Youtube with Youth Librarian Eileen. Some parental supervision may be required to complete each project. Celebrate Halloween with the Portland District Library at our Haunted Halloween. This multiday event will take place on the library lawn and will include masks and social distancing. Each event will feature trick-ortreat surprise bags, a spooky dance party and puzzle scavenger hunt, and one lucky patron will win a special prize! Dress in your favorite costume and have some spooky, safe fun at the library. Each event is weather permitting and dates and times are as follows: 10/13 1:00 pm, 10/15 11:00 am, 10/21 6:00 pm, 10/26 5:00 pm, and 10/30 3:00 pm. Recommended for ages 13 & under.
