Great Blood Drive

The American Red Cross is so thankful for the very successful blood drive at Saranac's St. Anthony's Church on September 21. It was a beautiful warm, sunny Michigan day. Fifty-two units of lifesaving blood were collected thanks to all the even warmer, sunnier hearts of the donors and volunteers.

John Heiler received his 10 gallon pin. Ryan Hesche, Gordon Kelly, Bruce Chadwick, James Meyer and Evangeline Pulcifer were Double Red donors.

We hope everyone has a healthy, blessed Thanksgiving in this great U.S. of A. Our next blood drive will be the day after Thanksgiving, November 27. Appointments at 1-800 RED CROSS and masks will still be required to keep everyone healthy.

† HAWLEY Richard Allan Hawley, age 57, passed away September 16, 2020 after a 20

year battle with heart disease. He was born August 9, 1963. The only son of Richard Adelle “Dick” and Sherry (Slough) Hawley-Dixon. Both parents preceded him in death, along with all grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

Rich was the beloved husband of Brenda for 38 years when they met and married as young teenagers in 1982. That same year they lost their first-born son together, Richard Allan Hawley II “Little Richie” at 8 days old. Their baby was born on September 18th and died on September 26th.

Rich was the most loving, adoring, gentle, playful, and soft-spoken father of Brandy (Anthony), age 36 of Wayland. She and all of the beautiful grandchildren she blessed him with – Taylor, age 12, Brody, almost age 10, Elyse, age 1 ½, Elayna age 3 months, plus Vanessa, age 15, and Bryce, age 13 were the absolute pure joys of his life.

Rich was the most fun, friendly, calm, and laid back, easy-going man you met! He was a true people person who treated everyone like he knew them his whole life. He worked for Lacks Enterprises for over 33 years and had many good friends there. He also had a great sense of direction and loved to travel or drive around visiting friends and family. He also loved to fish, hunt, camp, and play all kinds of sports and games. He was really good at all of them too! A charming winner but gracious loser.

He was especially skilled at golf, horseshoes and washers, bowling, etc. He became a big fan of stock car races and of course the Lions (when possible) and the Detroit Tigers.

Rich is survived by his three older sisters, Melody (Sean) Brooms of Fenwick, Kim of Ionia, Loree of Lakeview, and his six nephews that have all been asked to be Paul Bearers: Brad, Art, Frank, Josh, Robbie, Travis, and special friends. Tim Yoemans, Pat Ottobre, and many others.

He will be sadly, greatly, and dearly missed by all of us!

The Family will receive friends on Monday, September 21, 2020 from 5-8 p.m. at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia.

On January 16, 1954, Joan married the love of her life, Earl.

She enjoyed, reading, gardening and growing anything. Joan was a lover of animals. She was a teacher for many years and was active with the retired teachers and State employee retirement services.

Joan is survived by her children, Michael (Roxanne) Nelson of Ionia and Denise (Kenneth) Peabody of Ionia; grandchildren, Kevin (Christine) Peabody, Kimberly (Bruce) Hoeksema and Karen (Scott) Leak; great grandchildren, Ashley Reisbig, Justin Leak, Lindsey Leak and Kevin Hoeksema.

She is preceded in death by her husband Earl; brother, Jack Higbee; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Higbee.

Funeral services will be held 1 PM Monday, September 28, at Shiloh Community Church with Rev. Kenneth Harger officiating. Visitation will be 1-3 PM Sunday at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. † TRAVIS Steven Lee Travis aged 66 of Ionia passed away

September 17, 2020. He was born September 21, 1953 in Ionia the son of Gerritt and Marian (Tingley) Travis. He was the first patient to be admitted to the Ionia Memorial Hospital as a newborn.

Steve graduated from Ionia Highschool with the class of 1972. He married Brenda Esham May 1, 1976 in Ionia.

Steve loved working on cars and restored his 1974 Corvette. He loved traveling to various Michigan Islands, canoeing and camping.

He especially enjoyed visiting Michigan Wineries with his wife Brenda.

Surviving are his loving wife of 44 years Brenda Travis of Ionia.

Children; Lee Travis and Leisha Frost of Rockford and Jessica (Joe) Lafler of Ionia. Grandchildren; Brayden Lafler, Kierstyn Lafler and Jalynn Lafler. Mother in law Mary Esham and Ralph Bowerman of Ionia. Half-sister Janice (Joe) Kammers of Ionia. Aunts and Uncles; Bob and Jan Travis of Greenville, Vicki and Bernard Dailey of Hubbardston and Arlene Brown of Missouri. Several Cousins also survive.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents Velma and Arley Travis.

He served as a proud UAW Representative for 15 years and 15 years as a maintenance division employee for a total of 30 years with General Motors retiring in 2006. Joseph loved to hunt, fish, and go “RVing” with Charlene having traveled to all states except Hawaii. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlene whom he married October 20, 2001; son, Nick J. (Joelle) Zimmerman, Midland, MI; brother, James (Lauri) Zimmerman, Stanton, MI and sister Deb (Russ) Reist, Charlotte, MI; grandchildren, Vance Joseph and Kelly Marie Zimmerman, Midland, MI and Olivia Imhoff, Bentanvill, AR and various nieces and nephews. † JONES-HAUSSERMAN Cheryl Jones-Hausserman, age 60, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer. Cheryl was born on February 8, 1960, in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Dr. Ronald and Mary (VanSpronsen) VanValkenburg.

She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Ronald VanValkenburg, and her granddaughter, Bailey Marsman. Cheryl was a child of God, a loving wife, and the best mom! Cheryl cherished the time she spent with family. Cheryl found joy in fishing for bluegills at the end of her dock. She was a gifted artist, creating art throughout her lifetime; many pieces that family and friends will continue to enjoy. She loved the game of golf and the time she spent with her girlfriends on and off of the golf course. Cheryl found delight in all animals, especially their hunting dogs, Boone and Bear. Cheryl loved spending time with Ron at their home in Florida during the winter and at their cabin, training their dogs to hunt coyotes, in the Fall. Cheryl loved to laugh and left an impact on all who knew her. Homeowners can routinely check soil temperature to determine if their grasses have stopped growing.

Warm-season grasses tend to stop growing once the soil temperature is consistently at 55 F or below, while cool-season grasses tend to stop when temperatures are 45 F or lower.

Falling leaves have long been a barometer used by homeowners to determine if they need to keep mowing their lawns. That’s not necessarily a reliable metric, as grass can still keep growing even if leaves have been falling for weeks. In addition, using a mulching mower when leaves begin falling is a great way to provide the lawn with nutrients it can use throughout the winter. Some trees shed their leaves more quickly than others, but it’s a good rule of thumb that lawns will need to keep being mowed if trees are still retaining more than half their leaves.

Safe and effective ways to clean up leaves Removing leaves from the yard is a task that homeowners must perform each fall. Thousands upon thousands of leaves can drop from a single tree.

Multiply that by the number of trees on a property, and it’s no surprise the task of leaf cleanup can seem so daunting. Furthermore, not all leaves are shed at the same time, so several cleanup sessions may be necessary before the last leaf is banished from the yard.

Just like removing snow, leaf cleanup can be a taxing job if done by hand. For people unaccustomed to exercise, cleaning up leaves can turn into quite a workout. According to the Discovery Health Calorie Counter, raking leaves for one hour can burn nearly 292 calories.

Shoulders and arms will feel the burn. Raking leaves is considered moderate physical activity, similar to brisk walking. Those who find themselves straining or out of breath should

take a break, and these tips also make the job safer and easier.

• Wear layers when cleaning up leaves. It may be cool at first, but it’s easy to work up a sweat after raking for awhile. Layers can be peeled off so as not to get overheated or risk hypothermia from sweating in chilly temps.

• Pay attention to your

posture while raking.

James Weinstein, chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at Dartmouth Medical School, recommends forming a wide base with the feet and holding the rake slightly toward the end of the handle with one hand three-quarters of the way down the handle from the other. Do not twist the spine; move your entire

body. Avoid overuse of muscles on one side of the body by switching sides periodically.

• Do not try to rake or blow leaves on windy days. Wind will only make the task that much more difficult, which could lead to overworking oneself.

• Avoid overfilling bags.

For those who plan to mulch and bag leaves, remember that compressed leaves can get heavy pretty quickly.

Do not over-fill bags, as they can be hard to move or bring to a recycling center.

Using a leaf blower to push leaves into piles will reduce the strenuousness of the task, but leaf blowers can be heavy and noisy and gas-powered blowers can produce a considerable amount of exhaust.

Raking leaves can be quite a chore. It is important that homeowners take steps to prevent injury while cleaning up leaves in their yards.
