Andrew enjoyed golfing, proudly displaying his hole-in-one commemorations in the farmhouse kitch en. He liked following the stock market, and spent much of his time tracing his genealogy back to distant cousins in Sweden. But Andy’s favorite pastime was his open-door policy. Whether he was wintering in Sun City West, Arizona or on the farm, anyone was welcome as long as they knocked hard enough on the door. He enjoyed talking about anything to anyone; newcomers were always asked where they were from and who they were related to, and Grandpa showed a keen interest in their occupations and lives. He also loved taking care of the farm; mowing the property and giving tours of all the buildings were a highlight of his day. The farm is quieter without his presence now.

Doug LICENSED & INSURED 3 Ways to Save the Planet in Your Own Backyard (StatePoint) “Think globally, act locally” is a motto that everyone should take to heart. It emphasizes the importance of real actions you can take at home and in your community, while stressing the fact that every creature on planet Earth is connected. With that in mind, here are three great ways to save the planet in your very own backyard this fall: 1. Save the lives of birds: Bird pop

or by simply letting your grass grow wild and free. Talk to your neighbors about your decision and

translucent glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds. The brand also makes WindowAlert UV Liquid, a high-tech liquid that offers even greater protection when applied between decals. Remember, wild birds migrate in fall, making it an especially important season to take this step. From humming birds to eagles, learn more about the beautiful birds you love and how to protect them by visiting WindowAlert.com.2.Startacompost bin: Compost ing food scraps and yard waste is one action you can take with multiple benefits. It’s not just an ex cellent way to reduce the amount of trash you send to the landfill, your finished compost can be added to your lawn and garden to help plants thrive without chemical fertilizers. While it sounds simple since time does most of the work, there are some important composting do’s and don’ts to consider. Be sure to read up on best practices before you get started so that you only toss compostable items into the mix, and so you strike the right balance between nitrogen and carbon. This will speed up the process and yield higher-quality compost.3.Golow maintenance: Accord ing to the Natural Resources De fense Council, Americans consume nearly 3 trillion gallons of water, 200 million gallons of gas, and 70 million pounds of pesticides on their lawns each year. You can reduce your contribution to the problem by swapping out your conventional lawn for a meadow (which is comprised of native plants already adapted to thrive in your region), xeriscaping (a drought-resistant option requiring no mowing and little to no irrigation)

ulations are in de cline due to a range of threats, including habitat loss and climate change. In fact, North America has lost more than one in four birds in the last 50 years, according to the Audubon Society.
Research shows that applying decals that reflect ultraviolent sunlight to your home’s windows can substantially reduce the likeli hood of this occurring. Check out the bird decals from WindowAlert, which feature patterns that give the appearance of slightly frosted

Amid this alarming trend, you can make the skies safer for birds by mitigating the chance of win dow strikes, one of the more common threats birds face. In the United States each year, 350 million or more wild birds are killed when striking windows.

1. MEASUREMENTS. Measure the space where you’ll be placing the fridge. Not only does your new fridge need to fit into this spot, but you also need clearance to open
(StatePoint) Shop

3. CAPACITY. Keep your shop ping and cooking habits in mind to ensure your fridge size meets your needs. Are you someone who buys a lot of fresh produce and goods? Do you tend to do big gro cery hauls? Then a large-capacity fridge is a must. If space is at a premium and you’re searching for something compact, yet still able to handle your needs, a 24-inch Bottom-Freezer Counter Depth Refrigerator may be the ideal fit. With two shelves, a spacious 4.2 cubic foot freezer with three draw ers, and a removable wine rack for quick and easy organization, this innovative space-saving model features well-designed storage solutions.
5 Factors to Consider When Buying a Fridge

2. FINISH. Consider giving your kitchen a cohesive look by matching the finish of your new refrigerator to your other current appliances. Stainless steel is par ticularly sleek and easy to clean. With a quick wipe-down, your fridge can look brand new. Ultimately, opt for a finish that you love and that ties your kitchen together.
4. FREEZER STYLE. There are three main freezer style options you may come across when looking for a new refrigerator: side-by-side, bottom-freezer, and top-freezer. Determining which style is right for you largely depends on what you want as your main focus. For example, if you use your refriger ator more often than the freezer, a bottom-freezer is a good choice, as it means that your refrigerator shelves will be at eye level.
Looking for a new fridge, or any major appliance for that matter, comes with challenges, but understanding the latest options available and how they relate to your needs can make the process smooth and simple.
home, consider these five factors:
A multipurpose flex drawer with four independently-controlled tem perature settings means you can optimize the storage of meats (30 degrees F) or use it as a beverage cooler (34 degrees F). The flex drawer can also be optimized for deli items and snacks (37 degrees F) or converted to a wine chiller (41 degrees F).

5. FEATURES. After the basics, such as capacity and finish, comes the fun stuff -- extra features. These extra features can really set one ap pliance apart from another. To get an idea of what’s available today, consider the Sharp SJG2254FS, a French Four Door Counter-Depth Refrigerator. A great bet for those who entertain or have growing families and changing needs, it features a triple cooling system that allows you to independently control the refrigerator, drawers, and ice maker for greater flexibility.

Think back to the last time you purchased a fresh Christmas tree. What is the key to ensuring it gets enough water while on display? You guessed it: making a fresh

GET THEM IN WATER QUICKLY

MAKE FRESH CUTS IN STEMS

The temperature of the water in the vase should coordinate with the flowers on display. Do not use hot water or the stems will cook. Room temperature is best for most flowers, except for blooms from bulbs that flower during cooler months, such as tulips and daffodils. They’ll be more likely to thrive in cooler water, according to Consumer Reports.
Place the flowers in a vase or other vessel with water promptly after making the cuts. Some flo rists like to cut the stems under water to prevent air bubbles from forming in the stems. Choose an arrangement first, then cut and place the flowers in water quickly. This gives fresh arrangements a good chance to last awhile.
The experts at FTD by Design tested various theories for keeping floral arrangements fresh, includ ing adding aspirin to the water or using sugar or concoctions that contain vodka. Sugar and vinegar served as a runner-up for long-lasting blooms, but the best solution for prolonging the flowers was putting the arrangement in the refrigerator each night for roughly eight hours.

MONITOR WATER TEMPERA TURE

Before placing cut flowers in a vase, remove extra leaves at the base of the stems that will fall un derneath the water line. This helps to limit bacteria growth in the water and cuts back on foul odors. Plus, removing foliage focuses flowers’ energy on the main blooms rather than the leaves.
These steps can add life to cut flowers, helping arrangements thrive in any home.

Continue this process every three days or so. The 45-degree angle prevents the stem from squishing during the cut and enables it to absorb more water.

• Broccoli: Fresh broccoli makes a healthy addition to any dinner table, and Pickyourown. org notes that broccoli can have a lengthy harvesting season. Ear ly harvesting may begin in May in some regions, though it’s still possible to pick fresh broccoli in late October. • Pumpkins: Thanks in part to Halloween decor and the popularity of pumpkin pie as a Thanksgiving dessert, pumpkins are synonymous with the fall harvest. And pumpkin picking season aligns perfectly with each of these holidays, typically begin ning in early or mid-September and extending deep into October.

• Cabbage: If you’re looking to do some late fall picking, cabbage might be for you. The online resource Harvest to Table notes that cabbage can survive under snow without being harmed, making it an ideal late fall vegetable. Spoiled outer leaves can be pulled away after harvesting without affecting the quality of the remaining cabbage.
Fall

Food is a big part of fall, and farms play a significant role in seasonal celebrations. Each fall, families plan apple picking excursions with their eyes on baking homemade apple pies.

And while Halloween is made even more fun when carving jacko’-lanterns, savvy celebrants know that carving sessions are not complete without some roasted pumpkin seeds.
• Peaches: People who can’t wait to whip up a peach cob bler may need to do so before fall even begins. According to Pickyourown.org, peaches can be ready for picking as early as July in the northeastern United States, and the picking season generally ends around mid-Sep tember. The season is even earlier in places like Georgia, a state known for its peaches where the picking season can begin in mid-May and extend through early August depending on the variety.

• Apples: Apple-picking season typically begins in late summer and extends into fall. Many farms offer a variety of apples, which may be harvested at dif ferent times. For example, in the northeastern United States, Gala apples tend to be harvested in late summer, while Granny Smith apples may be best picked in early October.

• Active benefits: Gardening exercises the body and clears the mind. Studies show that increased outdoor exposure leads to fewer long-term health problems, helping improve car diovascular fitness, flexibility, strength, and dexterity—all leading to better mental health. Simply planting, growing, har vesting and maintaining plants gives you a direct emotional boost. Why? Gardening helps foster nurturing instincts and restores a sense of hope and purpose, ultimately improving self-esteem.•Passivebenefits: Don’t have a green thumb? Don’t worry. Scientific evidence proves that just being in nature has positive impacts on stress levels and brain chemistry. It can also lower blood pressure, increase concentration and improve mood. What’s more, being out doors offers a deeper sense of belonging and a new sense of purpose outside the daily grind. Designing Your Garden Scott advises designing your garden to reflect how you want to live outside. He typically builds “rooms” connected by meandering paths for resting, unwinding, and feeling restored. However, your outdoor spaces don’t always need to be quiet. They can encourage activity as well. If you enjoy company, create gathering spaces. Or, if you have hobbies that can be done outdoors like exercising, painting or writing, you can set aside areas for them.

• Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried.
5. Smell: You may already use aromatherapy indoors. Take this concept outside by growing fragrant flowers and herbs, so you can literally “stop to smell theScottroses.”and Dooley offer more insights in “Garden Therapy,” a recent episode of “Done-In-AWeekend Projects,” an original series from lawn care equipment

• A season by any other name … Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest
moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

• Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those cen tenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early en vironment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenar ians were born between September and November.

• The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of day light decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.
For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on Sep tember 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as

satisfaction of a

autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall.

• Plant cool season vegetables You still have time to plant peas, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, leeks, lettuce, radish and onion. You may have to cover them for frost if you don’t have a cold frame, but if you get them in right away you should get a harvest if freeze isn’t early.
• Feed annuals Annuals need regular fertilizing for good bloom production, about every 4 weeks.
• Plant cool season annuals Plant cool season annuals and ornamentals such as pansies, violas, snapdragons and ornamental cabbage.
• Plant peonies Plant, or divide and transplant peonies between the end of August and October. September is usually perfect. Remember that peonies prefer not to be disturbed, so divide only if the clump has gotten way too large.
• Check for web worms Prune the web out of the trees if possible and destroy. Otherwise treat chemically.

• Needle drop Don’t be alarmed to see your evergreen drop some needles. Old inner needles will drop as new needles form on the branch tips.
• Check containers and baskets Container gardens, hanging baskets and window boxes dry out quickly and need frequent watering. They will also need to be fertilized regularly.
• Harvest September is often the big harvest time for tomatoes, peppers, and hot season vegetables.
• Be prepared to lift bulbs Tender bulbs should be lifted and stored next month. But if winter is coming early, you may need to get it done at the end of this month.
• Lower the blade You can begin lowering the blade on the lawn mower as temperatures cool. Lower slightly next month again too until you wind up mowing quite short the last time or two.
• De-thatch De-thatch the lawn every few years in September. Aerate if you didn’t do in spring.
• Lawn repair When summer starts to cool and the soil is still good and warm, which could be mid August or early September, lawn seed or sod will establish quickly. If you plant to overseed the whole lawn, de-thatch first.
• Be prepared for frost Zone 5 generally does not experience frost until next month, but it does happen in September occasionally. Be prepared to cover your tender plants and crops if frost is forecast.
• Plant perennials September is an excellent time to plant perennials. Days are warm and nights are cool, perfect for establishing roots.

• Dig in compost As you clean out the garden beds, dig in compost so the soil is ready in spring.
• Slugs are active September brings slugs out in full force. Apply diatomaceous earth or other slug controls.
• Plant bulbs Plant spring blooming bulbs in September or early October.
• Water Plants, shrubs, trees will need regular watering right up until frost, and diminished rainfall in autumn isn’t enough. Evergreens especially need lots of water to prepare for winter since they keep their needles green all winter. To prevent needle drop and burn, make sure they get plenty of water right up until the ground freezes if you can.
• Apply broadleaf weed control Fall brings a fresh crop of lawn weeds. Apply broadleaf weed control early in September. Although you can purchase fertilizer with broad leaf weed control, conditions should be ideal when you apply (read the package) for best results.
