BELDING AREA COMMUNITY FUND A determined steering committee assembled summoned by the pursuit to answer the question, why not Belding. Community Funds play a key role in identifying and addressing community concerns. Surrounding communities have been reaping the benefits of community funds for decades. The stars have aligned and the opportunity to create an impactful legacy for Belding has been cultivated to fruition. We have been blessed with a $25,000 donation from Lisa and Bradley Ratliff, former Belding business owners. The Belding Area Community Fund is established and is currently taking the steps to become a recognized 501(c) (3) with the Internal Revenue Services.
Belding Area Community Fund is organized exclusively for charitable, religious, education and scientific purposes under section 501(C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or corresponding section of any future federal tax code. And more specifically, to promote initiatives, programs and projects that improve the quality of life in the Belding Community Area, and in particular, but not by way of limitation thereof, to solicit and receive gifts, devises, bequests, or otherwise any money or other property, absolutely or in trust, to be used, including principal and/or income, for that purpose. † FISHER Terry Kenneth Fisher, age 78, of Saranac, went to be with the LORD, September 4, 2021, after his journey with Dementia. He was born March 3, 1943, in Hastings, Michigan, the son of Kenneth F and Atheline (Litchfield) Fisher. Terry married Beverly E. Noon on June 8, 1963 in Saranac & together they raised four children. Terry farmed all of his life. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, cows & horses. He also raised fox, elk, whitetail deer & buffalo. He enjoyed harvesting seasonal fruit to share with all. He worked at Attwood in Lowell until his retirement in 2002. He attended Galilee Baptist Church with his wife, Beverly. Surviving Terry is his loving wife of 58 years Beverly; children Laura (Steve) Mallon of Spring Green, Wisconsin, Lisa (Scott) Ferguson of Lowell, Kevin (Tina) Fisher of Saranac and David Fisher (Sandy Smith) of Wyoming, Michigan; grandchildren Samantha Mallon, Aundrea (Jordan) Dennis, Angela (Ronel) Race, Abigale Ferguson, Tristin Fisher (Cole Stearns), Bryce Fisher, Brenton Fisher (Katrina Preston) and Brooklyn Fisher (Kenny Mcbain); 10 great grandchildren; sister Judy Dausmann of Saranac and brother John (Barbie) Fisher of Saranac; and several nieces & nephews. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, sister Joan McCaul and brother-in-law Dale McCaul, sister-in-law Diane (Dee) Fisher, brother-in-law Bob Dausman, granddaughter Erika Lopez-Fisher. Funeral services for Terry were held at Galilee Baptist Church in Saranac, Friday, September 10th at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Brent Bowden and Pastor James Frank officiating. Procession to & interment at Pinckney Cemetery with luncheon followed at the church. Visitation was at the church Thursday from 4-7 pm & 1 hour prior to the funeral service. He was born February 20, 1954 in Lansing, Michigan the son of Emmit and Matilda (Gensterblum) Fowler. Many years owned and operated the Oakwood Lounge in Pewamo with his wife Penny. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Michael was an excellent cook and enjoyed watching birds in his later years. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Surviving Michael are his children; Tracy (Brandon) Devereaux of Big Rapids, Ryan (Sarah) Fowler of Muir and Nicole (Andrew) Arens of Westphalia. She was born February 16, 1924 in Lowell, MI, the daughter of Smith and Lois (Morrill) Kyser. Lucille travelled the United States in her early years with her parents while her father sold things that he had invented. She finally settled in Ionia when she was in the 6th grade. She married Gayle E. Leslie August 16, 1944 in Ionia. He preceded her in death on January 28, 2011 after 66 years of marriage. Lucille worked at American Anodco for 2 years, then later worked at the Friend of the Court office as a secretary for 10 years. Following the retirement of Mrs. Bird, she took over the position of Friend of the Court working under Judge Bebeau for 12 years until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ionia. Surviving are her daughter, Sharon (Dallas) Houghton of Ionia, daughter-in-law Teresa Leslie, Grandchildren; Michael (Amanda) Leslie of Muskegon, Laura (Joe) Lutz of Grand Haven, Thomas (Stacie) Houghton of Saranac, Nathan (Naomi) Houghton of Haslett and Casey (Nicole) Houghton of Fenwick. Great grandchildren; Peyton Houghton, Cooper Houghton, Noelle Leslie, Lucas (Britany) Leslie, Matthew Leslie, David Leslie, Braden Leslie, Allison Lutz, Alex Lutz, Benjamin Lutz and Hannah Lutz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gayle and her son Thomas. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com. † ROSS Howard Charles Ross Sr. – March 25, 1938 - September 4, 2021 Howard Ross beloved husband, father, grandpa and papa was called to heaven on September 4, 2021. He was born in Ionia to Thomas and Bertha (Jensen) Ross. After attending Ionia High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Serving from 1956 through 1960 as a “Seabee” stationed on Adak, Alaska and Okinawa, Japan. Howard returned to Ionia and married the love of his life, Ruth Ann (Jesko) on March 5, 1960. They have two children, Howard Jr. (Mary) Ross and Roxann (Walter) Wiles. He worked hard and took great care of his family, often working two jobs including at Oldsmobile, Associated Truck Lines, Ionia State Hospital, Ionia Auto Glass, Ionia County Road Commission, and Ionia Ford. He retired from the road commission in 2000 to spend more time with his “Ruthie”. Along with his wife and children, he will be dearly missed by their grandchildren, Corey (Paige) Peterson, Gentry (Tony) Nnadi, Rachel (Don) Leslie, and Matthew Lewis. They all grew up listening to grandpa’s stories and appreciating how they became more elaborate as the years went on. His greatest joy in recent years was being papa to their great grandchildren. Teaching his “favorite girl” Adanna Nnadi about “bear traps” and how to speak Japanese. Spending time with Everett Peterson “high fiving” and playing skid loader. Enjoying holiday visits with Levi and Oliver Leslie. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Tom (Buster) and Bob, sisters Virginia, Shirley, and Helen (John) Hague. Also, his mother and father-in-law Joseph (Theresa) Jesko who he enjoyed a very close relationship with. In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, he is survived by his sister Pearl (Bob) McLeod, his brother-in-law and good friend Joe (Sandy) Jesko, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a family viewing at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Wednesday, September 8th. † RUTZ Charlett Maryann Rutz age 78 of Saranac passed away September 3, 2021. She was born March 16, 1943 in Saranac the daughter of Gerald J. and Eloyce (Guernsey) Robinson II. Charlett married Jack C. Rutz August 6, 1966 in Saranac together they raised four children and several foster children. She loved country music, flea markets, garage sales and auctions. Charlett was an avid collector including several pieces of jewelry. Surviving Charlett are her children, Tracy (Rob) Bussa of Clarksville, Kelli (Rich) Melcher of Saranac, Ron C. Rutz of Lowell, Annie (Greg) Koomen of Grand Rapids. Daughter-in-law, Kim Rutz of Saranac. Grandchildren, Tiffany (Tyler) Quillan, Kelsea Melcher, Jared Melcher, Kyrsten Rutz, Levi Koomen, Brooklyn Koomen, Cody Bussa, Katie Lower and Maddie Bussa. Online condolences may be made at www.lakefuneralhomes.com † WIRTZ Debbie passed away August 13, 2021, in the home she lived in when she was born, surrounded by family and friends. Debbie came into this world on February 19, 1956, at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital, the first of five children of Marion and Gene McPherson. A few hours later, she met her husband, Scott, born on February 20, 1956, in the same hospital. Debbie was there to welcome Scott into this world; Scott was there when Debbie left this world. Debbie was raised on the McPherson Dairy Farm north of Ionia. At an early age, Debbie developed a respect and love of nature and animals. Debbie adored dogs and had many throughout her life, but Cuddles was her favorite. Debbie attended Hubbell Country School, Ionia Junior High and High School, Class of 1974. Debbie excelled in Art and was recognize so with an award her senior year at Ionia. Debbie went on to get her degree in Graphic/Commercial Art at Ferris State University. Being the big sister of four siblings, early on Debbie developed a strong maternal instinct, which she had to have when her mother, Marion passed away in 1969. Debbie raised her son, James, alone from infancy. James and Debbie went through many lean and good times together. James was the light of Debbie’s life. Debbie also took care of her youngest sister for the last 25 years. Debbie and her sister, Julie, were as close as two humans could be, they were best friends. They endured the deaths of their mom, 1969, dad, 1975, and stepmom, 1974. But they also had many good times and were always there for each other. Debbie was a natural gardener who planted and tended, not only an annual vegetable garden, but also beautiful flower gardens that adorned her home and property. The gardens were havens for hummingbirds and butterflies, which she adored, but also deer and pesky woodchucks, which she wasn’t shy about dispatching with her trusty pellet gun. Debbie always wanted to be a beekeeper; several years ago, she and Scott became beekeepers which she loved. Debbie loved to travel. Be it a day trip close to home or a long journey like her many trips to Hawaii with her longtime friend Joni Krause-Robinson. Joni’s Hawaiian relatives loved Debbie, saying she was Ohana, meaning family. Debbie went across the “Big Mac” for the first time, the summer of 2015, with Scott and she fell in love with the Upper Peninsula. Annual summer trips to the UP were mandatory after 2015. Debbie loved to workout, doing jazzercise and Zumba with instructor and close friend Connie Struyk. Debbie and Connie had many adventures including performing Zumba routines in Chicago and the Silver Dome and trips to Mexico, Florida, and Connie’s cottage in St. Charles. Debbie was a great friend, always willing to help. Be it creating a rock garden, painting, cleaning, or photographing events for family or friends. Debbie was quick to volunteer; she helped organize several 1974 class reunions and was treasurer of the Ionia High School All Class Reunion. Debbie and Scott first connected their junior year and became a couple. Going into their senior year, Scott messed up and they split up. Over the years they would run into each other and catch up with each other’s lives. During these encounters, circumstances in their lives were not right to get back together. But finally, in 2014, at their 40th class reunion, they reconnected and within 4 months they became husband and wife in a dream ceremony on the beach, on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. In short, Debbie was Scotts first girlfriend and finally his wife. It was an epic love story beginning at birth and interrupted by Debbie’s passing. Debbie leaves behind: husband, Scott Wirtz; son, James Tingley; stepdaughter, Aime Wirtz; brother, Pat (Gina) McPherson; nieces, Ashley (BJ) Oaks and Paige (Josh) Burch; grandnieces, Avery, Harper, and Berklee; and grandnephew, Tyler; brother, Tom (Laurie) McPherson; nieces, Melissa (Jose) Esquivel and Monica (Lukas) Buxton; grandnieces, Emma, Rajalyaj, Aliyah, Sophia; nephews, Jose Jr., and Tayvn; sister, Julie (Dana) Pierson; niece, Angela (Brian) McCoy; nephew, Cody (Kelsey) Pierson; grandnieces, Kiera, Kenadie; grandnephews, Keattan, and Gabe; sister, Lisa McPherson; in-laws, Jack and Mary Jo Wirtz; brother in-law, Craig Wirtz; niece, Hannah; step-sisters, Debbie Perrien, Brenda Perrien, and Jan (Jim) Buskirk; step-brother Phil (Mary) Perrien; step-daughter Jackie (Jerron) Crawford; stepson, Teddy (Erika) Edlin; step-granddaughters, Savanna, Aubrey, and Erika; step grandsons, Casai and Hunter. Debbie was preceded in death by her mother, Marion (Hoppes) McPherson; father, Gene McPherson; stepmother, Maxine Perrien; and bonus-mom Patricia Roundtree. Saranac Area Musicians and Singers, SAMS... We're Back!!! After a year and a half break, your SAMS group is back to bring music to the Saranac Community! Because of the Covid Pandemic, we were not able to practice or perform our annual Christmas Dinner Concert or the Spring Concerts for 2020 and 2021. We are so excited to get back to our practices. One note of importance is, that for the sake of keeping everyone safe and healthy, we will not have a meal with the Christmas concert this year. Look forward to that coming back for the Christmas 2022 concert. Enter the Saranac High School band room on any given Thursday night during the school year and your ears will be welcomed to the pleasant sound of music. The SAMS choir and band meet there to make music from their heart to share with the community. You may ask, 'how did this happen'? Well, here is the story! Back in 1998, the late Chris Jerue came up with an idea to "bring people together that worked and lived in the Saranac area, as well as alumni, thereof to make music of the generations for the generations", a direct quote from their original mission statement. He shared this idea with a group of friends and SCAMM (Saranac Community & Alumni Music Makers) was born. Their first performance goal was to sing and play at the Saranac Bridgefest in August of 1998. This was followed by a concert at Christmas. Chris was directing the choir, accompanied by Sondra Ward. Seeing a need for instrumental music, the band, directed by June Truswell, was formed in 1999. SCAMM was deemed a huge success and was off and running. They became a non-profit organization in 1999 with the following board of directors: President-Chris Jerue, Vice President-Jodi White, Secretary- Sue Priest, Treasurer-Alice Hill, and Trustees Caresse Jerue, Dorrell Priest, and June Truswell. Their vision was to present 3 concerts a year as well as educational opportunities in vocal techniques, note reading, and music appreciation. SCAMM continued to perform and was very well received but, as Chris stated in a letter to the board," The only thing certain in life is change, and SCAMM needs to change in order to grow and be alive", So change did indeed take place. In 2003, the group became known as SAMS which stands for Saranac Area Musicians and Singers. We maintained most of the original by laws and goals and continued to be a non-profit group with the mission of "providing music of the generations, for the generations" for our community. Over the last 23 years, SAMS has participated in many projects. We were instrumental in the dedication of the new Saranac Community School Performing Arts Auditorium. Tom Hagen was commissioned to compose a piece for the dedication. Saranac Community Schools and SAMS felt it was necessary to honor Chris J erue at the dedication, because he had been instrumental in the planning stages for the new auditorium. Chris's death had been a hard time for all of us involved with SCAMM or SAMS and we felt that he needed to be a part of the dedication of a project that was near and dear to his heart.

As part of our mission to bring educational opportunities to the Saranac community, SAMS has brought talented musical groups to perform for the students as well as the community. We have helped them experience things like opera, folk singing, and strings and percussion groups. SAMS also supports the musical arts of Saranac Schools by purchasing items from their wish lists. Examples of that would be the band banner, items for the elementary music program and technical support for the auditorium. We have also performed for the residents at the Veterans Home in Grand Rapids and the Laurels of Kent in Lowell. We are open to invitations from other groups to perform for them. SAMS continues to present 2 concerts a year as well as performing at the Saranac Bridgefest in August. Our Christmas concert has become a dinner concert. We enjoy presenting a delicious meal to our guests followed by an entertaining night of music. In the spring, we perform a concert using a variety of themes and often have guest performers. The SAMS band has always been and continues to be directed by June Truswell. We thank her for her years of dedication to SAMS and SCAMM. Currently the director of the choir is Tom Hagen. He was preceded by Randy Masterson, Milo Brooks, and Ruth Murphy. Our children's choir was, for many years, directed by Tammi Kneale. We are currently in need of a children's choir director. For many years Sondra Ward accompanied our choir. Now Tom Hagen directs and plays for the choir. All of these directors have put their heart and soul into our group and we thank them. If you are interested in music and want to perform with a fun loving and caring group, come and join us in Saranac at SAMS. Thursday, September 16, 2021 will be our first practice. Choir practices at 6:00P.M. and the band at 7:00P.M. This first meeting of the year will include a membership meeting from 6:45 until 7:00. The greatest thing about music is that you can do it for your whole life. We have young musicians from age 3 up to young-at-heart musicians who are 80+. So come and join us, we would love to have you. The current SAMS board is President-Kathy Maatman, Vice President-Tammi Kneale, Secretary-Amara Edwards, Treasurer Lynda Richter, and Trustees
