Barry County’s 800-megahertz public safety radio system was implemented in the early 2000s. Because the number of users has increased substantially over the last 21 years, the system is now overloaded, putting it at risk. Additional tower sites will increase the system’s capacity, improve coverage, and support the sharing of additional infor mation and data to better meet the needs of police, firefighters, emergency medical responders and the Barry County families they“Thisserve.equipment upgrade will help first responders serve their communities and make them safer places to live,” said Albert, who as chair of the House Appropriations Committee plays a lead role in developing the state budget.

Calley, Albert help secure funding for Barry County public safety project

New tower will improve reliability of 911, first responder communications Barry County Central Dispatch and Emergency Management will soon receive state funding to build an additional emergency communications tower, thanks to a grant secured by state Reps. Julie Calley and Thomas Albert. The $3 million project is includ ed in the new state budget for the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1. “The public safety radio system is a vital tool that connects first responders with residents, dispatchers and each other,” Calley said. “If the system isn’t properly supported, there’s a risk it will fail, leaving residents and emergency responders without this vital lifeline during an emer gency. Furthermore, additional radio upgrades are delayed until adequate communications towers are installed to allow for the increased connectivity.”

NEWS FROM THE DEPOT

The more I looked into his life story, the more surprises (and questions) I came across. Did you know that he was one of the many soldiers to shake the hand of then President Abraham Lincoln just before the (second) battle of Bull Run? Did you know that there were two (2) battles of Bull Run? How did his last name lose an “s”? How did an Ohio lad end up with a Michigan unit? …the same unit that at one time was under the command of General George A. Custer?

Sheldon Russell Curtiss is one of twelve featured life stories that are to be told by reen actors during the upcoming, and first ever, Boston-Saranac Historical Society’s “SARANAC CEMETERY TOUR” – Sunday af

Boston-Saranac Historical Society – September 2022 SAY! Not only is “say” an ex clamation expressing surprise, or a way to draw attention to an important statement --- it turns out that it is the nickname of one of Saranac’s past residents, Sheldon Russell Curtiss. I know this from reading the children’s book, “Pink and Say,” which describes Say Curtis’ meeting with Pinkus (“Pink”) Aylee, a black soldier, during the Civil War, their capture by Confederate troops, and eventual internment near An dersonville, GA, the infamous Camp Sumter. He was 15 years old. Born in 1839 in Ohio, the “book” refers to “Say” as hav ing been with the Ohio 24th Infantry. The story explains that he was left for dead in a muddy, blood-soaked pasture somewhere in Georgia, when “Pink” rescues him. After his release from Andersonville at the end of 1864, he was not discharged until October 1865 at which time he settled in the Saranac area until his death in 1924 at the age of 84. In an online memorial of his death, it was noted that he had been a Private with Co. M, 6th Mich igan Cavalry??

LANSING, MI – For the fifth year in a row, E.W. Sparrow Hospital and its Compre hensive Stroke Center has received the highest level of recognition for stroke care nationally and, for only the second time, we have been honored for our care of Type 2 diabetes patients who have hadThestrokes.StrokeCenter has been honored by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association with the Get with the Guidelines®-Stroke GOLD PLUS achievement award and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus for performance during 2021. Sparrow’s diabetes program has been recognized with the AHA/ASA’s Get with the Guidelines® Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll. These awards mean Sparrow meets the rigid standards set by the Get with the Guide lines® initiative and that we provide the most up-to-date treatment, with improved care andStrokeoutcomes.isthe number five cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.GetWith The Guidelines® puts the expertise of the Amer ican Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nation wide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest research- and evidence-based guidelines.Toqualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award hospitals must meet specific criteria that reduce the time between a patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster drug, alteplase. The hospital also received the American Heart Associa tion’s Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll, which aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke. Stroke and specifically stroke care for diabetes patients are critical healthcare issues in our community. To achieve the stroke and diabetes awards, hospitals are assessed based on such factors as the proper use of medications and utiliza tion of the latest treatments ofSparrowcare. is the region’s only hospital to be designated as a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission. The designation – given to an elite network of facilities nationwide – rec ognizes centers that make exceptional efforts toward de livering the best care possible to "complex stroke" patients.
