The family of Anita St John would like to say a special Thank You.....

August 17 was an emotional and beautiful day and we want to thank everyone for coming to the celebration of life for Anita St. John, along with all the calls, texts and cards to those that were not able to attend.

She was the best mom, sister, auntie and grandma ever and will be so dearly missed by everyone. I find comfort knowing she is now with the Lord and no more pain and suffering and joins my dad(Ron St. John) and sister (Brenda Lewis) in heaven.

Also a special "Thank You" to Colleen at Bluewater Cafe for letting us have her celebration at her favorite place and also to Louie Shafer & Brendan Silvernail for playing music, I know she was listening :).

Sincerely the Family of Anita St. John

University of Michigan Health-Sparrow hospitals receive five-star quality ratings

LANSING, MI – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Carson, Clinton and Ionia are among only a handful of hospitals statewide to earn the top five stars in national rankings for quality, safety, timeliness and value.

The three UM Health-Sparrow community hospitals were among only 14 of 149 Michigan hospitals to achieve the ranking from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

It is the first time Carson and Ionia have received the five-star ranking and the second time for Clinton.

“I am honored to be part of teams at both UM Health-Sparrow Carson and Clinton that have earned these prestigious rankings through their hard work and dedication to the people of

these communities. It is a good feeling to see that efforts from all the frontline team members are being recognized. I could not be prouder of the teams,” said Mark Brisboe, MBA, president of UM Health-Sparrow Carson and Clinton.

CMS uses 46 different types of data to determine the star ratings, including quality, safety, timeliness and value of care for adults, and ratings from patients themselves. Patients evaluate the hospitals on responsiveness to call lights, communication, cleanliness of the hospital and their likelihood of recommending the hospital.

“It is with great pride that UM Health-Sparrow Ionia received this designation of five stars from CMS for providing safe, effec-

tive care to the patients of our community,” said Linda Reetz, MBA, BSN, RN, president of UM Health-Sparrow Ionia. “Our team is committed to providing evidence-based, best practice care while ensuring a strong patient and family centered approach. This designation validates the steadfast efforts and dedication of our team members and their commitment to the highest level of quality care.”

UM Health-Sparrow is part of the U-M Health statewide network, which received the ranking of five stars for the sixth consecutive time. University of Michigan Health-West received four stars.

† O’MALLEY Margaret Ann O’Malley passed away on July 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 17, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to George Leo and Ellen (Mangham) Bowler. She was an extraordinary woman who dedicated her life to her family. After a long and courageous battle, she has peacefully departed from this world. Margaret married the love of her life, Richard J. UM Health-Sparrow Ionia team member honored with DAISY award

IONIA, MI – University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Ionia recently honored an emergency department nurse with the DAISY Award for providing compassionate, quality care for patients.

Courtney Vance, BSN, RN, was named DAISY Award honoree based on a team member nomination commending her skills with pediatric patients and explaining that her “calm, competent demeanor contributes greatly to smooth intubation and stabilization.” Vance has worked at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia since 2022.

“Courtney is dedicated to providing excellent care to our patients,” said Tara Lanz, emergency department manager at UM Health-Sparrow Ionia. “Courtney is particularly strong in critical events and her

performance has been noted by the team and her peers.”

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate, and skillful care given by nurses every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is a national program created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999 of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, or ITP, at age 33. His family was overwhelmed by the skillful and compassionate nurses who cared for him, and the DAISY Foundation and award were created as an expression of their gratitude.

For more information or to nominate a nurse, visit UofMHealthSparrow.org/DAISY.

Tips for a memorable Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend is widely considered the unofficial swan song of summer. Though millions of children return to school prior to Labor Day weekend, the final holiday of summer still marks an ending to the season of relaxation and a return to the hustle and bustle of life when the temperatures dip and schedules fill up. Perhaps because Labor Day has become synonymous with the end of summer, many people look to make the weekended preceding the holiday as fun as possible. People with such intentions can keep these tips in mind as they seek to plan a memorable Labor Day weekend

this year.

• WAKE UP EARLY IF YOU INTEND TO TRAVEL. Labor Day weekend should be memorable for all the right reasons and traffic is not one of them. A recent survey from the vacation planning experts at The Vacationer found that roughly 148 million people planned to travel over Labor Day weekend in 2023, which makes the three-day period a particularly busy time to be on the road or in the air. If you intend to fly this Labor Day weekend, try to book an early morning flight to reduce the risk of delays. If you’re driving, hitting the road before sunrise, particularly if you’re traveling a long distance, can help you avoid traffic jams.

• PLAN THE WEEKEND. It can be tempting to fly by the seat of your pants come Labor Day weekend, but it’s still best to book excursions and even dinner reservations in advance. The popularity of Labor Day weekend and its status as the unofficial end of

summer compels many people to get up and go over the three-day period, so theme parks, water parks, restaurants, and other attractions may be all booked in advance. Purchase tickets and make reservations months in advance to ensure you aren’t left with little to do and/or nothing to eat come Labor Day weekend.

• CREATE A BACKUP PLAN. Ideally the weather will cooperate and Labor Day celebrants will be able to spend the entire weekend outdoors if they so desire. But weather is unpredictable, so it pays to create a backup plan in advance. If you’re traveling for the weekend, look around for indoor entertainment spaces to spend the weekend if the weather is uncooperative. If you’re planning a backyard barbecue at home, arrange for some indoor activities or pick a rain date and let guests know. If the party is scheduled for the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, a Sunday rain date

might work.

• GO WITH A SUMMER THEME. Even if the kids are already back in school and your summer family vacation is a distant memory, that’s all the more reason to revive the spirit of summer one last time. If hosting at home, a Hawaiian luau theme complete with a pig roast or a final summer pool party is a great way to send summer off before welcoming fall into the fold. Encourage guests to

don summer attire and revive your summer playlist to get guests in the mood. If you’re traveling for the weekend, pick a sunny, sandy destination so you can squeeze every last drop out of summer. Labor Day weekend marks the perfect time to send summer off with a bang. Some pre-weekend planning can ensure everyone has a memorable final few days of summer.
