Donald William Melchert, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 surrounded by his family. Donald was a veteran of the U.S Navy serving during the Korean War aboard the USS Midway. He was a member of the American Legion and the Ionia Moose Lodge. Donald was an automobile mechanic for most of his life, served on the Muir Fire Dept. for several years, was an avid bowler, loved fishing, singing karaoke, and playing golf. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Marie (Bennett) Melchert in 1990; brothers, Arthur and Raymond; sisters, Virginia, Sylvia, and Mary. Donald is survived by his children, Donald (Bobbie Jo) Melchert and his children, Shannon Kay (Galyn) Walker and Danielle Nicole Melchert; son, Roy Melchert and his children, Cpt. Roy (Trish) Millwood and Amber Jurimello; daughter, Minnie Clark and her children, Lonnis W. Eavey, Holly Leone (Jimmy) Clack and Candis Yvonne Hantal-Eavey; son, Joseph (Rebecca) Melchert and their children, David Choinere, Christine Choinere, Irene Melchert, and Jessica Melchert; daughter, Christina Mae (Douglas) Furman and their children, Christopher Douglas Furman and Corinne Ann (Gary II) Daily; son, Otis (Tammy) Melchert and their children, Heather (Joe) Melchert and Nicholas (Kristy) Melchert; daughter, Julia Ann (Michael) Joseph and their children, Raymond Kolarik, Theodore Kolarik, Chad Kolarik, Phillip Kolarik, Tasheenia Joseph, and Jacob Joseph; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted by Roy Melchert (son) at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 23, 2024 at Tuttle Cemetery. The family will receive friends for lunch and sharing of memories on Friday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Ionia Moose Lodge. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. NORMINGTON Emma J. Normington, of Belding, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2024 at the age of 89. She was born in Riley Township on June 8, 1935 to Charles C. and Anna E. (Truesdell) Valentine. Emma married the love of her life, Lyman R. Normington on October 28, 1958 and they shared 65 years of marriage together. She was a devoted member of First Christian Church in Ionia for many years. Emma enjoyed reading, crafting, and sewing in her spare time. Above all, Emma was a proud homemaker, she spent countless hours making sure her family was well taken care of. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Preceding Emma in death are her parents; sisters, Mary Tasker, Susan Stowell, and Nancy Kirk; and brothers, Wayne Valentine, David Valentine, and Richard Valentine. Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband, Lyman Normington of Belding; sons, Ray (Holly) Normington of Rockford and David Normington of Belding; daughter, Susan (Ken) Crawford of Belding; six grandchildren: Taylor, Cody, Lindsey, Devin, Andy, and Sierra; great-grandchild, Jasper Normington; and brothers, Buster (Barbara) Valentine of Ionia and Clare (Viva) Valentine of Lowell.

The Funeral Service honoring Emma will be held at held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Muir. † OLSON Judy Kay Olson age 81 of Grand Rapids, MI passed away Saturday, August 3, 2024, after a long battle with Ovarian Cancer. She was born on February 6, 1943, in Ionia the daughter of Roy and Bernice (Wells) Lake. Judy married the love of her life Herbert “Herb” Olson on June 29, 1968, sharing 55 years of love and laughter together.

Surviving Judy are her children Mark Olson of Grand Rapids, Julie Olson of Bangor, MI, Tammy (Scott) Poling of Tecumseh and Dawn Olson of Grand Rapids. Grandchildren Jessica Burns, Joshua Olson, Stephanie Forbes (Lafata), Stacey Lafata, Emily Lafata, Nathan Reyes, Amber Reyes, Nicholas Reyes, Andrew Reyes, Rylan Kozak, Lillian Kozak, 8 great-grandchildren and many half siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Herb, son Douglas Badder and brother Gerald Lake. Judy was an amazing cook and could often be found in the kitchen whipping up a batch of her famous Christmas cookies which her children often volunteered her to make for their school holiday parties. (Don’t ask for the recipe as this is a family secret.) She would often take meals to friends or family if they were sick or in need. Judy also loved shopping, going to the casino, tending to the beautiful flower gardens that her husband created for her as well as birdwatching. A memorial service will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Saranac on Saturday, August 24th at 1:00 PM with Pastor Ryan Morter officiating. There will be a visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be a private family service at Easton Cemetery. For those who choose to do so, in lieu of flowers the family requests that you make memorial contributions to the Ovarian Cancer Association. to consist of the maintenance and operation of a fire department, including personnel, administration and the purchase of fire motor vehicles, apparatus, equipment, materials and housing as necessary to maintain and operate a fire department within the boundaries of the Township.

2. The Special Assessment District will consist of all land and premises within the boundaries of the Township as generally depicted in the map below and consisting generally of Bricker Road to the North, Bradley and Chickering Roads to the West, Woolridge and Cowan Roads to the South and M-66 (Green Arrow Rte) to the East; provided, however, that there shall be no assessment against property exempt under the General Property Tax Act, 1893 PA 206, MCL 211.1 to 211.155.

The annual estimate of the costs and expenses to maintain and operate a fire department, including personnel, administration and the purchase of fire motor vehicles, apparatus, equipment, materials and housing, is on file with the Township Clerk for public examination at Township Hall at 3077 Palmer Road, Orleans, MI 48865. Any property owner or party in interest wishing to examine such document should call the Township Clerk at (616) 761-3111 extension 3 for an appointment.

4. The Township Board of the Township of Orleans has determined that the costs and expenses to maintain and operate a fire department shall be assessed against the Special Assessment District consisting of all land and premises within the boundaries of the Township (provided, however, that there shall be no assessment against property exempt under the General Property Tax Act, 1893 PA 206, MCL 211.1 to 211.155).

5. The Township Board will hold a public hearing at Township Hall at 3077 Palmer Road, Orleans, MI 48865 on August 27, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. local time, on the annual estimate of costs and expenses, the question of creating the Special Assessment District and defraying the expenses of the Special Assessment District by special assessment on the property to be especially benefitted (except property exempt from the collection of taxes under the General Property Tax Act) and to hear and consider objections, if any, to the cost estimate and Special Assessment District therefor, and any other matters related thereto from persons interested in or liable to be assessed for the public improvement. Any persons objecting to any aspect of the public improvement shall file their objections thereto in writing with the Township Board at or before the close of the hearing.

SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRICT NO. 1

2024 SPECIAL ASSESSMENT ROLL NOTICE IS GIVEN:

1. That the Township Board of Berlin Township, in accordance with the laws in such case made and provided, will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at 7:00 p.m., at Berlin Orange Fire Hall, 265 W. David Highway, Ionia, Michigan 48846, to review and to hear any objections to the 2024 estimated costs and expenses and the 2024 Special Assessment Roll and the distribution of the levy for the BERLIN TOWNSHIP FIRE OPERATIONS AND EQUIPMENT SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRICT NO. 1.

That said improvement consists of the maintenance and operation of a fire department, including personnel, administration and the purchase of fire motor vehicles, apparatus, equipment, materials and housing as necessary to maintain and operate a fire department within the boundaries of the Township.

5. That the proposed costs and expenses and the proposed special assessment roll for 2024 is now on file with the Township Clerk for public inspection at Berlin Orange Fire Hall, 265 W. David Highway, Ionia, Michigan 48846. Any property owner or party in interest wishing to examine the proposed costs and expenses and the proposed special assessment roll should call the Township Clerk at (616) 527-9567 for an appointment.

6. If the proposed special assessment roll is confirmed, or is modified and confirmed, the special assessment will be collected in the same manner as property taxes as provided by law. This special assessment will be collected with the winter taxes.

7. Any person objecting to the special assessment roll shall file his/her objection thereto in writing with the Township Clerk before the close of the hearing. That any person objecting to the special assessment roll may file a written appeal with the State Tax Tribunal. The written appeal must be filed with the State Tax Tribunal within 30 days after confirmation of the roll. Appearance and protest at the hearing to confirm the special assessment roll is required in order to appeal the amount of the assessment to the State Tax Tribunal. An appearance may be in person, by agent, or by letter.
