† SIMON Michael J. Simon (Mike), age 80 of Lyons, passed away on Saturday June 1, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 21, 1944, in Lyons Township, the son of Clarence and Elda (Miller) Simon. Mike grew up on their family farm and farming continued to be a huge part of his life. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda (McCrumb) on October 1, 1966, and we know he is overjoyed to be reunited with her. He served in the National Guard and retired from General Motors after several years of service. Mike was a big fan of all car races, especially at I96 speedway, hunting, gardening and spending time with his family.

Preceding Mike in death are his wife of 45 years, Linda; his parents, Clarence and Elda; brothers David and James. Surviving are his children; Glenn (Cathy) Simon, Rhonda Rooks, Kristen (Marti) Schrauben and Melinda (Dan) Graham; grandchildren, Amanda (Matt) Stambaugh, Holly (Skyler) Wilmarth, Michael (Katelyn) Simon, Rhet (Emma) Schrauben, Alaina (John Schneider) Schrauben, Grace (Benjamin Kenning) Simon, Emily Simon, Macey Schrauben, Nicholas Rooks, Lilly Rooks, Faith Rooks, Lola Graham, Daniel Graham, Cora Graham and Michael Bo Graham; great grandchildren, Myla Dalman, Lilah Wilmarth and one on the way, Easton Schrauben; siblings, Rosemary Spitzley and Thomas (Germaine) Simon; brother-in-law Roy McCrumb; sister-in-law Janice Simon.

The Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 6th at St. Patrick Church in Portland. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery. The family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Wednesday, June 5th at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia and 1 hour before the service at St. Patrick Church in Portland. A rosary was prayed at 6pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. For those wishing, memorial contributions may be made to Portland Rite to Life or to the St. Patrick School Tuition Angels Fund https://portlandstpats.com/church/donate/ in memory of Michael J. Saranac Community School district residents will be voting for four Board of Education members on November 5, 2024. The current four year terms of Kevin Courtnay, Chad Elliott, Roy Hawkins and Brad Hesche expires on December 31, 2024.

Are you interested in being a board member? To be eligible for election, a person must be a citizen of the U.S., be at least 18 years of age, and be a resident of the Saranac Community School District for at least 30 days prior to November 5, 2024.

Interested persons who wish to have their names on the ballot must secure signatures from a minimum of 6 registered voters or a $100.00 nonrefundable fee may be filed in lieu of a petition. Petitions are available at the Superintendent’s Office, 225 Pleasant Street, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The deadline for candidates to file petitions is Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
