† MILLER Gary Leon Miller, age 61, of Portland, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021.

† RAFFLER Elwyn Raffler, age 89, of Wood† DOWNS DeWayne Curtis Downs 87 of Saranac passed away Thursday, July 29th, 2021 in Ionia. DeWayne was born February land, passed away Thursday, July 18, 1934 in Ithaca, the son of Clarence and Nyda (Dailey) Downs. 29, 2021. DeWayne grew up in North Star with his siblings. He graduated from † SALGADO Ithaca High School in 1951. DeWayne lived in the Ionia/Saranac area Tracey Ann Salgado, age 59, of most of his life, operating The Downs Agency, selling insurance and Saranac, passed away Tuesday, real estate. He participated in many community organizations, such August 3, 2021. as Jaycees and Sons of the American Legion. DeWayne enjoyed his years spent at Snow Lake, where he extended his hospitality to † WILLETT family and friends to join for frequent gatherings. He was a dedicated Paul David Willett, age 44, Michigan State Spartan Fan, who took advantage of season tickets of Lake Odessa, passed away and loved to tailgate with other fans. He and his siblings were very Monday, August 2, 2021. close, and their tradition of holding large family reunions will continue. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed organizing group outings for family and friends. DeWayne is survived by his children, Debra Downs and David (Nancy) Downs; grandchildren, James (Heather) Bledsoe, Matthew (Jennifer) Bledsoe, Erin (Andrew) Paiz, Allison Downs, Lucas (Sara) Higgins, Andrew Downs, Nathan (Sarah) Downs, and Daniel Barnick; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. DeWayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia (Patti) Lea Allen Downs; his parents; his daughter, Denise Downs; granddaughter, Barbara Barnick; sisters, Audrey Jean Shaw and Evelyn Curtis; brothers, Ira Downs and William (Bill) Downs, and finally, his loyal dog, Sparty. Memorial services will be noon on Friday, August 13, 2021 at Saranac Community Church. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Saranac Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Saranac Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the church and or Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding where funeral care has been entrusted. Minutes published on July 17th found to have two corrections. The minutes should have read “Berlin Township Board Minutes” instead of “Berlin Township Special Meeting Minutes” and “July 6th, 2021” not “July 7th, 2021”. Further minutes were approved as read. Treasurer’s report was approved as read. Reviewed Ionia County Economic Alliance. Motion made by W Vaarberg and supported by R Alexander to renew John Gussenbauer for a new term for 2021-2025 as Trustee for Berlin Township for Saranac Clarksville District Library. State Rep. Julie Calley and the Michigan House approved the Unlock Michigan citizens’ initiative to repeal the unconstitutional state law Gov. Gretchen Whitmer used to hold unilateral power over the people of Michigan during the early portion of the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure received bipartisan support. “I’m proud of the many, many Michiganders who stood up and took action to make certain that such a power grab never happens again,” said Calley, of Portland. “The people of our state are much better off when our government leaders work collaboratively to solve our state’s problems.” During the pandemic, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer used the 1945 Emergency Powers of the Gov-

ernor Act (EPGA) as justification to indefinitely extend Michigan’s state of emergency and the executive powers she used to issue broad and sweeping orders. The Michigan Supreme Court declared the EPGA unconstitutional last October and the Legislature voted in December to remove the unconstitutional law from the books. However, Gov. Whitmer vetoed the measure. Even before the Supreme Court decision was issued, concerned citizens started the Unlock Michigan petition to repeal the EPGA, submitting more than half a million signatures in October. After several delays, the initiative finally reached the Legislature this month. Now that both the House and Senate have approved the measure, the law will be repealed.
