† BRIGGS Dennis Nyle Briggs, age 64, of Ionia passed away August 1, 2022. He was born
February 27, 1958 to James and Ardyce (Southern) Briggs. Denny would go on to marry Vicki Lynn Dilley August 4, 1995. Together, they raised two daughters. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters, grandkids, family and friends. He loved motorcycles and NASCAR and was always the life of the party. He also enjoyed his work at Impact Operations in Saranac. He is survived by his wife, Vicki; daughters, Kalie Briggs (Tyler Dawson) and Audrey Briggs (Patrick O’Connell); grandchildren, Ellee, Ezra, Nyle, and Dakota all of Ionia; siblings, Rod (Rhonda) Briggs of Ionia, Brad (Kathy) Briggs of Dimondale, Terri (Dan) Barnes of Ionia, Karen Taylor of Byron Center, Scott (Diana) Briggs of Clarksville, and Chris (Kim) Rowley of Ionia; mother and father-in-law, Floyd and Marilyn Dilley; sister-in-law, Connie Schrauben; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews. Denny was preceded in death by his parents. Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Denny’s Life held at the Ionia Moose Lodge, 869 E. Lincoln (M-21) in Ionia, on Friday, August 12 from 11-2pm.
† COULSON Robert H. Coulson age 86 of Saranac was reunited with the love of his life
Karen Coulson on July 28, 2022. He was born July 31, 1935 in Ionia the son of John H. and Teresa M. (Zanto) Coulson. Bob married Karen Peterson on December 26, 1958 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He served in the United States Army while stationed in Germany from 1958-1960. Bob worked for the State of Michigan as a Corrections Officer, first at the Michigan Reformatory on the farm and later moved to Transportation at Riverside Correctional Facility working for 28 years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and a life time member of the Boston Saranac Historical Society. Bob drove bus for Saranac Schools, volunteered as a Little League Coach and Chain Gang for Football Games. He was proud to have donated over 2 gallons of blood to the Red Cross. Bob enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska and Panama and enjoyed 30 winters in Haines City, Florida. He was an avid Tiger’s Fan and especially enjoyed watching his own children and grandchildren play sports. Surviving Bob are his children; Chris (Tami) Coulson of Saranac, Craig (Maureen) Coulson of Grand Rapids and Kim Coulson of Ionia. Grandchildren; Amanda (Bryan) Stratton, Kelli (Jeff) Moore, Chad (Jennah) Coulson, Kaleigh Coulson, Matt (Lauren) Coulson and Nick Coulson. Great grandchildren; Kennidy, Collin, Rhett, Maebry, Charlotte and Theo. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Karen and sister Mary Lou Coulson. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Saranac, Monday August 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Michael Goodwin presiding. Visitation was 1 hour prior to services at the Church. Services will be live streamed on Lake Funeral Homes Facebook page and will be ongoing available. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Saranac Fire Department, Boston Saranac Historical Society or charity of your choice. † JONES Robert Lewis Jones passed away peacefully on August 2, 2022 surrounded by family. He was born on March 5, 1927, the son of Lewis W. and Bessie M. Jones. He attended Collins Country School and graduated from Portland High School. He attended Grand Rapids Junior College, Grand Rapids School of Horology and the Chicago School of Watch Making. He served his country in the United States Army from 1945 through 1946 at Camp Gordon in Georgia and Camp Pickett in Virginia. From 1951-1956 he worked as an apprentice for Carl Heitman at his jewelry store in Ionia. Heeding his father’s words of advice while growing up that in order to never have any regrets you should try something different, something you always wanted to do, so in 1957 Bob attended the Michigan State Police Recruitment School and was a Michigan State police officer in Battle Creek, Clinton, Blissfield and Jackson, Michigan from 1957-1961. Upon the sudden death of Carl Heitman in 1961, his widow, Irma, asked Bob if he would be interested in purchasing her husband’s business so it could remain a viable business in downtown Ionia, considering him to be a person of dignity and integrity to carry on her husband’s work. He continued the business of R. L. Jones Jewelers until 1999, when he sold it to Barry Trierweiler, who had been his apprentice, and it then became Trier Jewelers. In 2017 the jewelry store, which had been on Main Street for 93 years, closed. Bob was a member of the Ionia Rotary for 25 plus years, Treasurer of the American Red Cross, member of the Ionia Community Chest, Chamber of Commerce as President and Director and the Michigan Retail Jewelers Association have been President from 1991-1993. He enjoyed golf, gardening, playing bridge, swimming and woodworking. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 Years, Diana (Maroulis) Jones, of Ionia and his daughter, Jennifer Jones, of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Elizabeth Jones Tyler and his son, Robert L. Jones, Jr. in 2005. Bob was very fond of his Gregory cousins (Marion Jones Gregory was the sister to his father) Rus, Larry, Lois, Carol, Jerry, Norma, Perry and Richard and had many special memories of time spent with them. Horology is defined as “the science of measuring time, the art of making instruments for indicating time”. Time served R. L. Jones well, a life with no regrets. In Lieu of flowers it was Bob’s wish that donations be made in his memory to the Mid-Michigan Honor Flight, a non-profit organization that honors American veterans for their sacrifices by flying them to visit memorials in Washington D.C. He was fortunate to have taken this trip with his daughter Jennifer in 2017. Larry Sinclair Melcher was born to Raymond Fredrick Melcher and Clara Adelaid (Lewis) Melcher on June 21, 1938 in Motley, MN. Larry met his beautiful wife, Nancy Louise (Hand) Melcher on a blind date, because his and her friends knew they would be perfect for each other. They married on June 23, 1962 and went on to have 4 children, Larry Lee (Barbara), James (Charen), Richard (Kelli) and Mary Jane and resided in Saranac Michigan. In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband and father, Larry also loved traveling (especially to historical sites), playing the piano, painting, and riding the golf cart around property. Throughout his entire life, he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. Larry joins his mother, father, and siblings Sharon (Rudy) Martha (Bill) and sister-in-law, Diane, along with many friends and extended family in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Nancy. His children and daughter-in-laws: Larry Lee, Barbara, James, Charen, Richard, Kelli, and Mary Jane. Grandchildren: Shianne (Josh), Jonathan, Melanie (Jesse), Kelsea, Katelyn, Jared, and Lillee. Great Grandchildren: McKenzie, Savannah, Alex, Henry, Ellery, Sawyer and Enslee. Visitation will be held from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Galilee Baptist Church, 291 Orchard Street, Saranac. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 5, 2022, at the church with a luncheon to follow. Red Cross Blood Drive
Forty-six units of life-saving blood were collected at Saranac's Red Cross Blood Drive at St. Anthony's Church on July 25. Julie Hartman and Kenneth Raymond received their one gallon pins, Annmarie Vanderziel received her 2 gallon pin, Christine Parks received her 4 gallon pin, Susan Peacock received her 5 gallon pin, Timothy McCrackin received his 14 gallon pin, William Garland received his 15 gallon pin and Bruce Chadwick received his 17 gallon pin. Michigan is blessed with such healthy, willing donors! Double Red donors were Bruce Chadwick, Curtiss Chadwick, James Meyer and Daniel Kaufman. † WILSON Phebe Wilson, age 98, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at Hathaway Hills in Greenville. An active and lifelong resident of the Sheridan area, Phebe has been a fixture in the community. She and her late husband, Frank, owned and operated Wilson Farms since 1942, they also sold Pioneer Seed Corn and Badger Farm Equipment for many years. Phebe and Frank were instrumental in introducing the registered Holstein breed to the Central Michigan area. She was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and Michigan Holstein Association. Phebe served as the Bushnell Township Clerk for over 45 years, was a lifelong Republican, volunteered at Sheridan Community Hospital, and was also a 4-H Leader. She was the longest surviving member of the Michigan Farm Bureau, having been a member for 80+ years, and was also a member of Montcalm County Farm Bureau. Phebe was a member of the Montcalm and Michigan Township Associations. She was a member and attended Fenwick United Methodist Church her entire life. Phebe Wilson left the world and Sheridan area better than she found it; everyone in the community is a little better off because of Phebe. Surviving Phebe are her daughters, Avis (Dennis) Jensen of Levering and Judy (Jerry) Emmons of Sheridan; grandchildren, Kirsten (Eric) Guenther of Hubbard Lake, Jill (Chad) Harms of Granger, Indiana, Heather Emmons (Rob Drew) of Grand Rapids, Chad (Lesley) Emmons of Byron Center, Tyler (Andrea) Emmons of Rockford; great grandchildren, Cailey (Nick) Jones of Petoskey, Logan Guenther of Hubbard Lake, Jensen Harms, Ava Harms, and Maryn Harms, all of Granger, Indiana, Kennedy Emmons, Keegan Emmons, and Andrew Emmons, all of Byron Center, Kelly Emmons and Daniel Emmons, both of Rockford; and her nieces and nephews, Karene Cooper, Connie Howes, Tom Worden, Ellen McGowan, Jane Worden, and Donna Wilson; and her cousin, Robert Worden. Phebe was preceded in death by her parents, Frank & Laura (Johnson) Worden; husband, Frank Wilson; sister, Helen (Howard) McGowen; brothers, Paul (Bea) Worden, Robert (Bea) Worden, and a brother-in-law, Don (Isabelle) Wilson. Every year for decades now – on the fourth Saturday of August, downtown Saranac invites everyone to this festival in celebration of the bridge crossing the Grand River. The Saranac Community Association is responsible for the organizing of the festival but why is “bridge” part of the name? Michigan has over thirty-six thousand beautiful square miles of rivers, creeks, and streams. Environmental water quality affects people other than those directly surrounding the waterways. Chemical run-off, trash, and debris are all items that can be found in waterways, placed there either by accident or human-error. All these pollutants can travel from their point of origin through the various streams, creeks, and rivers ultimately to inevitably end up conglomerating in our Great Lakes. Less than one-percent of all the planet’s fresh water is accessible to us. Pollution is a serious issue that affects truly everyone. British poet W. H. Auden once noted, “thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” Yet while we all know that water is both limited and crucial for life, we trash it anyway. One local company in Saranac, Michigan recently decided to do something about it. CHO Provisioning, located at 75 N. Bridge St, decided to act against the pollution of the local stream (named Lake Creek) in town that runs behind their cannabis retail store. CHO Provisioning spent nearly a month gathering support from volunteers to sign up to assist with the local creek clean up, organized by CHO team leader Brandon Priebe. “Lake Creek is part of the Tyler Creek Watershed, and it is a vital part of the community’s ecosystem. CHO made the decision to sponsor the creek as an effort to both pay respects to the community, and the natural landscape that it is a part of”, noted Brandon. After an outpouring of support from clients and other members of
the community, volunteers were carefully selected to help with this important undertaking. In the early morning of Sunday, May 29th 2022, employees from CHO Provisioning (and a few carefully selected volunteers) put on their swimming trunks, sandals, hats, and rubber waders to enter Lake Creek in Saranac. “From the moment we started, it was no easy feat! We entered Lake Creek at about the worst possible point. I almost drowned. It was a good day”, commented Daniel, manager of CHO Provisioning. “Overall, we chose the hardest part to start in because we are not afraid of a challenge and are always going the extra mile when nobody else will – for our customers, and for our community. We want to support the community that supported us”. Armed with six five-gallon buckets and some debris nets, the team from CHO Provisioning and its volunteers were able to make it through a grueling and treacherous 1,373ft worth of Lake Creek before having to call it a day and go
back in time to open the cannabis retail dispensary. At the end of the clean-up, all the five-gallon buckets had been filled with trash, garbage, and debris collected out of the Lake Creek stream. After disposing of the collected trash safely and appropriately, the team and its volunteers headed home and called it a day. Malcolm Culmer, owner of CHO Provisioning, made note to mention that “knocking out the creek clean-up was a new experience for most, and felt very fulfilling for the team here at CHO. This event, I can say, has
reminded us that this is just the beginning of making an impact on the supporting communities that we touch as we grow. We would like to stand out and offer more than just the tax dollars within every community that welcomes us. May I repeat – this is just the beginning”. ART IN THE PARK RETURNS TO LAKE ODESSA ON AUGUST 6 LAKE ODESSA, MI: Art in the Park is back, and marking its 47th year. The fun -- the browsing, the ability to see and buy various forms of art and crafts from local and regional artists and artisans -- takes place on Saturday, August 6th in Lake Odessa's shady and picturesque Village Park, beginning at 9 a.m. The annual tradition is hosted by the Lake Odessa Area Arts Commission. Whether people are in the market for a unique piece of jewelry, pebble art, painting, home décor, folk art or apparel, there will be plenty to spark the imagination, and organizers expect a good turnout of vendors and people coming to look and buy this year. Organizers say more than 5,000 people attend Art in the Park, where more than 70 artists and crafters display a rich variety of crafts and artwork, along with vendors offering food and drink. Throughout the day visitors will be treated to the sounds of some favorite Michigan-area musicians. This year's entertainment line-up includes: • 9:00 AM - Opening Flag Ceremony: Veterans from VFW Post 4461 and a local Boy Scout troop present the colors, followed by Metro Johnny, playing favorites from the ‘70s to today, in an easygoing and fun style. • 10:15 AM - The Wild Honey Collective: A five-piece acoustic ensemble performing original songs and traditional American folk music. • 11:30 AM - Punch Drunk: A band with Moxie, they are diverse in the music and instruments that they play, from Tin Pan Alley to 80's Pop to Folk and beyond. • 12:45 PM - Michigan Mafia String Band: Featuring a vast repertoire of styles, from blues to country to bluegrass. • 2:00 PM - Michigan Mafia String Band. • 3:15 PM - Center Stage Dance Academy: Students showcase the dance skills they’ve learned throughout the year • 4:00 PM - Door Prize Announcements In addition to great musical entertainment, activities for children of all ages will be available at the Kids' Zone from 11 AM to 3 PM. Children
will be able to enjoy a variety of make-and-take craft projects and balloon animals. For adults, "Art of the Vine," a wine-tasting venue, returns for its second year. "In 2021 we just decided we would try something new as a way to celebrate this opportunity to gather together again following COVID," said Arts Commission chair Meg Hermes. A variety of wines from Michigan vintners will be available for sampling, and a limited number of commemorative glasses will be available for guests. Tickets for guests 21 years of age and older may be purchased at the entrance to the wine-tasting venue, which will be open from noon to 4 p.m. While strolling the park and browsing the various booths, visitors will want to take time to relax and enjoy a snack or meal.
