Dear Keene Township residents: My name is Ray Krieger and I am running for Keene Township Clerk. My wife, Linda and I live on and farm our property that has been owned by my family for 125 years. I’d like to think that I’m not running against anyone. Rather, I’m running for the residents of Keene Township and to protect their property rights. Keene Township is divided over landowners wanting to lease land for solar energy. People, including my opponent, want to stop or severely restrict property owners from doing so. I believe we will never end the division in our township if my opponent is elected and property rights become limited or taken away. I do believe that healing can come if property rights are preserved and protected.

I am asking for your vote on August, 6th for Keene Township Clerk and ask that you join me in supporting Corey Wojcik for supervisor, Tara Decker for treasurer, Jerrad Higgins and Chris Nelson for trustees.

WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN

TO GOOD PEOPLE, we are often left asking ourselves, “what now?” Or better yet, “what’s next?”

A year ago, the severe thunderstorms that spawned at least two tornadoes in western lower Michigan, was the result of an extremely unstable environment that also featured dew point readings (a measure of atmospheric moisture) around 80F, some of the highest seen in the last 60 years. In addition to the tornadoes, the thunderstorms produced numerous areas of 60 to 70 mph wind gusts and very high amounts of lighting. Power was wiped out to around 460,000 customers statewide.

This was not the first time that the people of Saranac faced such natural, or even manmade, disasters. Over the last 150+ years, they have witnessed tornadoes, floods, blizzards, ice storms, fires, bridges collapsing, dams breaking, even train crashes, of such a spectacular nature that none will soon be forgotten.

Saranac was incorporated as a village in 1869, but it was in 1857 that the first steam locomotive arrived. In August of 1900, a major train wreck happened in downtown Saranac at the original location of the Saranac Depot (on the north

end of Depot Street). Two train engines came together, head on. A local freight was standing on the main track, when No.66, a stock special, came along at a “thundering” 40 mph and crashed into the standing freight train. The pile of wrecked railroad cars had to be burned to clear the track.

The following July, 1901, a torrential downpour that lasted for more than 24 hours, caused streets to overflow, cellars to be flooded and two dams (Walter’s, one mile south of Saranac, and Huhn dam on South Bridge Street) to both give way at the same time.

The resulting floodwaters carried a steel bridge from the Huhn dam, which took down a wooden bridge, and ripped a barn off its foundation at the corner of Bridge and Division. Rivers of mud and twisted timber was held back, briefly, by the steel bridge on Mill Street before the Mill dam gave away too. The railroad

bridge held but was twisted and bent and weakened into an unsafe condition.

That was not the first such flood (the earliest one recorded was in 1883), nor was it the last. In June, 1905, both the Walter and Hunh dams gave way when a terrific cloudburst came and resulted in three bridges washing out. This time the railroad suffered more severe damage, with grading washouts that caused a few trains to derail. There was no train or mail service for several days.

Of course, floodwaters and dam breaks are not the only thing that can put a bridge out of commission. In May of 1969, the bridge over the Grand River – the north end – collapsed when a gravel truck crossed, with a car also crashing when the bridge gave way. There were no injuries but it was not until 1977 that the bridge was wholly restored.

But back to 2023’s extreme weather and resulting damage --- this happened Thursday evening, August 25, 2023 and was just before the annual Bridgefest celebration. What did the good people of Saranac do? They carried on as best as they could…as they always have in the past.
