IONIA, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital has honored Nurse Courtney Pett, BSN, RN, with a DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses in recognition of her patient-centered approach to care. The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. Pett, who works in Sparrow Ionia’s Surgery Department, was lauded for her professional and positive attitude, and always being willing to help wherever there is a need. Patients were quick to comment that she helped them relax before surgery and was helpful through their whole procedure. “Courtney is a great nurse who puts her patients’ priorities above her own. She is very deserving of this, and I am so happy she’s part of our great surgical team,” said Matt Gerred, BSN, RN, Manager of Surgical Services. Pett was presented the award in a recent ceremony. She has been employed at Sparrow Ionia since October 2016 and lives in the Lyons/
Muir area with her husband and three children. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is a national program created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999 of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, or ITP, at age 33. His family was overwhelmed by the skillful and compassionate nurses who cared for him, and the DAISY Foundation and Award were created in gratitude. Pett received a certificate, a DAISY pin, and a beautiful stone sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculpture depicts the embracing relationship Nurses have with their Patients. Other nominees were: May Finos, BSN, RN, Surgery Department; Brooke Jackson, RN, Med/Surg; Shannon Jones, BSN, RN, Infusion/ Oncology Department; Cara Miller, RN, Med/Surg; Hally Reule, RN, Med/Surg; Terri Rowley, RN, Surgery Department; and Victoria Stiffler, RN, Emergency Department.

– OBITUARIES – † CALKINS Susan “Sue” Calkins, age 66 passed away in the comfort of her home Monday July 27, 2020 after a courageous 10-year fight with cancer. She was born February 28, 1954 in Ionia the daughter of Gerald and Hazel (Bugner) Krywanski. Sue retired from Ionia Public Schools as a bus driver for those with special needs. She also worked part-time at the YMCA. She had many friends among the school community, and they were a great source of strength and support for her. She will be most remembered for her love of sewing. She painstakingly made beautiful and personal quilts by hand. Her work was impeccable and the love she put into each will be felt forever. Sue’s greatest love was the time spent with family on camping and fishing trips, boating, traveling out west and gardening. Sue will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Robert Calkins of Ionia who she married April 7, 1973. She will also be missed but always in the hearts of her two daughters Amy Calkins of Belding and Lesley Calkins of Lakeview. She is survived by her mother Hazel Krywaski of Ionia, brother Mike Krywanski (Polly) of Rockford and sister Bonnie Petersen of Greenville. She is proceeded in death by her father Gerald Krywanski. Most of all Sue was a kind and generous person that always made time for others. She left behind many wonderful memories for all those that knew her. Rhoda lived a life full of joy she enjoyed playing the organ, raising animals especially her cats. Sewing was one of her favorite past times,and helping others with the local food pantry and women’s abuse center. Rhoda was a very kind loving woman and touched everyone’s hearts she came in contact with. She was very deeply loved and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Survived by Step-Father Robert Culver of Lake Odessa; Brother Roger Taylor of Lakeview; Sisters Ruth Ann Hinkle of Arizona and Rosalee Brown of Iowa; Children Ricky & Donna Rybicki of Lake Odessa, Michael Rybicki Fiance Cristal Rolfe of Ionia, Tina & Scott Anderson of Orleans and Christopher Rybicki of Saranac. Several nieces,nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents Margaret E. Culver and Lawrence Taylor; Brothers Robert Taylor, Richard Taylor and Ronald Taylor; Son Timothy Rybicki. Cremation has taken place no services will be held upon Rhoda’s wishes. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Association. † SPRAGUE Trevor L. Sprague, 37, passed away July 26, 2020, with his family and friends by his side. He was honored as a Michigan Gift of Life Donor after a brief illness. He was born on January 17, 1983 to Brian and Dawn (Moore) Sprague. Trevor graduated from Ferris State University, where he met his wife Melissa Sprague and they married on July 23, 2005. He received a degree in criminal justice and served many years as a police officer in both Nebraska and Michigan. During his time as a deputy in Arenac County, he worked as a K9 officer with his dog Sonic. He found great purpose in helping others and serving his community. More recently, Trevor worked for EJD Transport in Standish Michigan where he loved his work as a Safety Director. Trevor was a strong and loving man, blessed with a compassionate and welcoming heart. Trevor loved to golf and travel with his family and friends. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed building and talking about guns. Most of all he loved spending time with his daughter Maddy and wife Melissa. He is survived by his Wife: Melissa Sprague; Daughter: Madelyn “Maddy” Sprague; Parents: Brian and Dawn (Moore) Sprague; Siblings: Ashley (Anthony) Belloir and Taylor Sprague; Mother-in-Law: Sue (David Meyers) Trudell; Brother-in-Law: Rob (Dana) Trudell; and many other friends and family. Funeral Services for Trevor will be held Friday, July 31, 2020 at 4:00 pm at the Lee Ramsay Funeral Home-STANDISH CHAPEL, Standish, Michigan with Pastor DeAnne Eddy officiating. Interment will follow in Sterling Cemetery, Sterling, Michigan. The family greeted family and friends from 10:00 am Friday, July 31 till time of service at 4:00 pm. Sparrow unveils new “Wear a mask. Save a life” campaign
LANSING, MI – Sparrow has kicked off a new public service campaign, “Wear a mask. Save a life,” designed to emphasize what’s at stake in protecting ourselves from the spread of COVID-19. Leading Sparrow clinicians urge everyone to follow expert-recommended safety protocols, including wearing a mask, to slow the spread of the virus and help avoid another deadly wave. “By covering your mouth, nose and chin, you’re significantly lowering the chances of spreading infection through small droplets that come out of your mouth when you talk, sneeze and cough,” said Karen Kent VanGorder, M.D., Sparrow’s Chief Medical and Quality Officer; Alan Vierling, DNP, MSN, RN, Sparrow Hospital President; and Denny Martin, M.D., FACOOG, Sparrow Hospital Chief Medical Officer. Everyone at a Sparrow site of care, whether it is patients, caregivers, visitors and executives, are required to wear a face mask. “Wearing a mask can be uncomfortable. It’s never been required in our lifetimes and it’s not natural to many of us,” the Sparrow clinical leaders said. “But our message is not going to change: Everyone who comes to Sparrow will be screened and you must wear a mask. But we’re not asking people to do it because it’s required, we’re asking them to do it to save the lives of their fellow human beings.” Sparrow has been a leader in providing personal protective equipment to our patients and caregivers during the pandemic and in testing the community.
