† MIER Daniel J. Mier, 36, of Ionia, passed away unexpectedly Sunday July 19, 2020 in Grand
Rapids. Daniel was born on January 9, 1984 in Ionia, the son of Dan and Roxanne (Winnie) Mier. Dan attended Ionia High School and enjoyed hunting, fishing and car races. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He is loved and survived by his parents; Dan and Roxanne, siblings; Robert (Shannon) Mier of Ionia and extended siblings; Roshanda (Greg) Rashid of Kalamazoo, Sonya Bowling of Ionia, his nephew and nieces; Camden Mier, Mia Mier, Rave Mier, grandparents; Ray (Joyce) Winnie of Greenville, Rosemary Mellema of Ionia and aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents; Carl and Violet Mier. In keeping with his wish’s cremation has taken place. A time to celebrate Daniel’s life will be Sunday, July 26, 2020 from 1-3 PM at the “Auction Barn” M66 and Woods Rd. 6076 N. State Rd., Orleans, MI 48865. Memorials may be given to Ionia Area Hospice. Rep. Calley, Michigan House approve funding for Barry County recreation projects Rep. Julie Calley and the Michigan House this week approved funding for two Barry County recreation projects – helping extend the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail and adding a shooting range to the Barry State Game Area. The projects are included in recommendations from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. The recommendations are made to the Legislature, which is working to finalize and authorize the plan. “Barry County is beautiful, as anyone who has spent time on the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail or at the state game area knows well,” said Calley, of Portland. “They will become even better attractions with these enhancements.” The legislation authorizes $350,000 to acquire 26 acres to extend the Paul Henry-Thornapple Trail in Thornapple Township. The land includes 2.5 miles of abandoned rail bed, which will connect the north end of the trail in Barry County with the south end of Kent County’s system. Most of the property is natural
wildlife habitat, including frontage along the Thornapple River. At the Barry State Game Area, $200,000 would be allocated to build a new shooting range that incorporates sound abatement and other important elements. This new range will allow the Department of Natural Resources to close an existing, substandard location. Statewide, the measure approved by the House provides $28.7 million for 60 recreational development projects and 18 land acquisition projects. Money in the Natural Resources Trust Fund comes from the development of minerals on state land – not general tax money -- and is distributed on an annual basis in partnership with local governments. The money must be used for acquisition or recreational development projects, according to the Michigan Constitution. The Natural Resources Trust Fund program dates back to the 1970s. Senate Bill 145 returns to the Senate for further consideration.

Sparrow Ionia Hospital, Ionia County Health Department to hold COVID-19 testing in Lake Odessa Lake Odessa, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital and the Ionia County Health Department are combining to offer COVID-19 nasal swab testing at a special one-day event in Lake Odessa on Wednesday, July 29. The testing will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church – Family Center, 741 Washington Blvd., Lake Odessa. Attendees are asked to use the north parking lot off of Washington Boulevard. Our July 20,2020 American Red Cross Blood Drive at St. Anthony's Church was a warm, busy day! An amazing 54 units of life-saving blood were collected while everyone was wearing their masks their own or donated hand sewn masks. Four young people were first time donors - Spencer Stewart, Leah Rottier, Leslie Warner and Kotes Warner. Robert Straub donated his second gallon oflife saving blood. Letter to the Editor To whom it may concern, Every day, hospitals and healthcare teams across the country are learning new information about the spread of coronavirus and how to best protect the public from COVID-19. As our state gradually reopens, it’s crucial to follow expert-recommended safety protocols, including wearing a mask, to slow the spread of COVID-19 and help avoid another deadly wave. We at Sparrow Health System have launched the Wear a Mask, Save a Life campaign because we know that simply wearing a mask is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of the virus. By covering your mouth, nose and chin, you’re significantly lowering the chances of spreading infection through small droplets that come out of your mouth when you talk, sneeze and cough. Although they cannot be washed, disposable masks are fluid resistant and effective in providing some protection against the spread of infectious droplets from person to person. Wearing a mask can be uncomfortable. It’s never been required in our lifetimes and it’s not natural to many of us. But our message is not going to change: Everyone who comes to Sparrow will be screened and you must wear a mask. But we’re not asking people to do it because it’s required, we’re asking them to do it to save the lives of their fellow human beings. Everyone at Sparrow, from the CEO and governance board members on down, is modeling this behavior. It’s become more and more commonplace because wearing a mask is a better alternative than spreading a disease that may kill you or someone you love. Ultimately, it’s about protecting our patients, caregivers and community. While the risk of spreading COVID-19 is lower when at least one individual is wearing a mask, the probability is lowest (at least 70% less likely) when both (or all) parties are wearing masks while practicing physical distancing.
It was also found in a recent lab study that masks made of household materials such as cloth have up to a 60% filtration rate for droplets that are linked to spreading COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has provided guidance on how to make a mask with common household materials at www.cdc.gov/ coronavirus. It’s important to remember that many people who are COVID-19-positive don’t show symptoms, so the risk of the virus may be present to others, whether or not you realize you are sick. Wearing a mask protects yourself and others, especially vulnerable people, even if you consider yourself healthy or aren’t experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Additionally, wearing surgical masks does not have any consequential effects on respiration or lead to inhaling toxic levels of CO2. This was proven in a study conducted by members from the National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We appreciate all those doing their part to keep themselves and others safe as we navigate this evolving virus. To protect yourself, each other and to ensure our economy can remain open, please wear a mask or face covering. State Rep. Julie Calley today supported a plan to rectify the governor’s fatal error that may have contributed to the COVID-related deaths of at least some of the nearly 2,000 nursing home residents who have died in Michigan. Calley, of Portland, said the mandate to put COVID-19 patients into long-term care facilities alongside uninfected residents was decided by the governor alone, without any legislative input. The governor has chosen to continue the policy, despite evidence that it could be putting thousands of more lives at risk. “I cannot comprehend why anyone would think putting COVID-19 patients into our nursing homes under the same roof as our most vulnerable residents was a good idea,” Calley said. “How much longer must our loved ones be at risk before the governor agrees to end this policy?”
The plan requires the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Department (DHHS), along with the state department for Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, to complete an evaluation and report of the current policies regarding COVID-19 patients and nursing homes by Aug. 15. Additionally, the legislation requires DHHS to develop and implement a new plan by Sept. 1 creating at least one dedicated regional facility within each of the state’s eight health regions for use as COVID-19 patient facilities. Finally, Senate Bill 956, unlike the governor’s current plan, protects nursing home residents by prohibiting the placement of individuals with COVID-19 in any long-term care facility unless it has a separate dedicated building where infected patients can be properly cared for while quarantined.
