– OBITUARIES –
† ARBOUR Della Joy Arbour age 82 of Ionia passed away July 15, 2022. She was born August 8, 1939 in Smith Center, Kansas the daughter of William Dick and Edna Margaret (Newbrey) Winkelmann. Della spent her first 16 years on the farm with her parents in Athol, Kansas. She moved to Gaylord, Kansas upon retirement of her father in 1956. Della spent her first two years in a country school, upon its closing she attended school at Cedar through the 8th grade and later went to Gaylord Highschool where she would graduate majoring in business courses. She would later attend Brown-Mackie Business College in Salina for one year. Following college Della went to work at the National Bank of America in Salina. Della would meet the love of her life Edwin Peter Arbour in March of 1959 and they married January 16, 1960 while Ed was in the Air Force. After Ed completed his 4 years in the service, they moved to Lansing, Michigan in September of 1960. To their union they were blessed with Six Children Jean, Karen, William, Jeffrey, Dale and Timothy. She accomplished her lifelong dream of owning her own Beauty Salon. Della operated the salon in her and Ed’s home in Mulliken, where she could fulfill her life as a wife, partner to Ed and Mother and Grandmother and in the process work to earn a few of the extras in life. Della believed God was her constant companion and friend. She loved outdoors and worked many hours to beautify their yard and home. Della loved her God, husband Ed, children, grandchildren and parents with all her heart. Surviving Della are her husband Edwin Arbour of Ionia. Children; Jean Hayes of Dewitt, Karen Cross of St. Helen, MI, William Arbour of Tennessee, Jeffrey Arbour of Virginia, Dale (Sarah) Arbour of Merrill and Timothy Arbour and Michelle Aldrich of Saranac. 13 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Funeral Mass was celebrated at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ionia Friday, July 22, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Tom Brown presiding. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to Shriners International or St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Arrangements in care of Lake Funeral Home in Ionia. He was born on March 29, 1942 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Ned and Lenore (Richardson) Berger Sr. Ned graduated from Ionia High School, Class of 1960, where he was a 4-sport standout athlete. He then graduated from MSU with a bachelor’s degree. Ned joined his father, Ned Sr., at a young age working around the dealership and later would continue the Berger dealership legacy until his retirement in 2016. Surviving Ned are his sons, Brett Berger of Ionia and Blake (Jill) Berger of Romeo; significate other, Maggie Kapp of Lake Odessa; grandchildren, Alex Berger, Brianna Berger, Bianca Berger and Brikelle Berger; great grandchild, Violet Berger; Maggies children, Spencer Everts, Mary Everts, Royce Everts and Alex Everts; Ex Wife, Suzanne (Ciangi) Kelly; sister-in-law, Linda Ciangi; nieces and nephews Taylor McGinn, Dana Stansel, Connie Ciangi (Derrick) Veale, Beth Ciangi (Chris) Robinson and Frank (Angel) Ciangi; great nieces and nephews, Maddie, Sarah, Francesca, Samantha and Gian-Luca. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Debe Berger-Sands and Diane Fosnow, nephew Devon Sands and brother-in-law Frank Ciangi. A memorial visitation will be held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Sunday July 31st from 2-4 pm with a celebration of life and light luncheon to follow at Steele St. Hall. He was born May 9, 1932 in Saginaw, Michigan, the son of Durward and Marguerite (Whitchurch) Bosley. Jim graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1950 where he played football. He attended Ferris State University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He serviced in the Army during the Korean War. He opened Bosley Pharmacy and served on the Board of Directors of Ionia County Memorial Hospital for several years. Jim’s enjoyments in life were time spent with family, friends, and football. After retirement he enjoyed traveling in his motor home and eventually spending the winters in Lake Placid, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; daughter, Tara Bosley of Houston, Texas; son, David (Brenda) Bosley of Ionia; granddaughter Amanda (Nick) Hull of Saranac; great-grandsons, Colton, Wyatt, and Liam Hull; step-granddaughter, Abby Leonard of Ionia; sister, Jackie Parham of North Carolina; brother-in-law, Rodger (Kathy) Montgomery of Lansing; sister-in-law, Janet Montgomery of Haslett; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Carole Hallett; brothers in law, Marv Hallett, Red Parham, Richard Montgomery, and David Paige; and sister-in-law, Mildred Paige. Visitation was held at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, and 1 hour prior to the funeral. Funeral Services for Jim were at the First Presbyterian Church in Ionia, Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 11 AM with Dr. Chris Dorn officiating. Interment with Military Honors to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Those wishing, may make Memorial Contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Ionia or a charity of choice. † MCGINN Our father, Steven George McGinn, 65, of Ionia, Michigan and Kempner, Texas, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 12, 2022. Steve was born on September 02, 1956 to George J. McGinn and Donna L. McGinn in Ionia, Michigan. Steve was a loving father to James (Jaimie), Kristan (Nick) and Jonathan (Kim). He loved his children with everything he had and was very proud of who they were. He loved to talk about his children to his friends and family and made sure his children knew just how proud he was. He was also a grandfather to Dylan, Ellerie, Haven, Veronica, Emma, Luke and Audrey. He loved those around him in his own Steve way and did what he could to make them feel his love. Steve spent most of his life between two states and cities, his home of Ionia, Michigan and with his children in Kempner, Texas. It always seemed he was buying plane tickets to go back and forth. In his hometown of Ionia, Steve spent all his time with his beloved siblings, Sheryl Rutherford (John), Russell McGinn (Shirley), Mark McGinn (Linda) and Christopher McGinn. He was very close to them all and treasured all the time he was with them. He loved to golf often with his family in Michigan. Steve and his brothers would go to the local Moose lodge of which Steve was a long-time member. He loved being part of the Moose and sharing this with his brothers. He talked about having some beers and playing keno with them, which was something they also loved to share. He would get so excited when they would win and would talk about it for days. Steve would also try to fly back to Ionia for the fair each summer. He would spend time with his family and friends in the beer tent and he always talked about the chili dogs. Steve was a diehard University of Michigan fan; you would rarely find him without a Michigan shirt or Michigan hat on. He loved Michigan football, basketball and baseball. He also enjoyed cheering for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions, many times you would find him yelling at the tv when his team was losing. He would turn it off and back on as he couldn’t handle watching his team losing. His love of sports was something he shared with his oldest son James. They would watch them together often. He also loved riding with James while James went on calls to fix golf carts. Every day he would check in with James to ask about the daily schedule. Steve had a very outgoing personality, back to childhood as friends and family would say. He loved to laugh, tell his stories of his adventures and make jokes when the time presented. He loved to meet new friends, near and far and always had so many people to talk to. Steve also loved to spend time at his daughter Kristan’s house. They moved frequently and he loved visiting the new states. The Seattle area was his favorite. His son Jonathan and him were constantly joking back and forth. It was a race to see who could get the first funny comment each day. They also enjoyed talking about wrestling together. Steve loved 70’s music and would listen to it all the time. His favorite song was Nights in White Satin, a song that was also his sister Nancy’s favorite as well. Nancy preceded Steve in death as well as his father George and mother Donna. There are so many things that we could say about Steve, it’s hard to sum up such a special person in very few words. We will cherish so many amazing memories that we have with him. We love our dad and will miss him greatly; we already do. A celebration of life for Steve will be held on August 4th, 2022, from 1 pm-4 pm at the Ionia Moose Club in Ionia, Michigan. Please come celebrate our dad’s life and tell us stories about him that you remember. A celebration and interment will also be held in Lampasas, Texas at Oak Hill Cemetery on August 20th, 2022, from 5:00-6:00 PM † MOURER Lavonnie (Bonnie) Lydia Mourer, age 90, of Lyons, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022. Bonnie was born on June 4, 1932, the daughter of Carl Cribbs and Mabel Clark Lowery. Bonnie loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed race walking, traveling the continental 48 states with her daughter and spending time at her home. She is survived by her loving husband of 74 years, Allen Mourer of Lyons; son, Mike (Vicki) Mourer of Florida; daughters, Kendra (Bill) Jones of New Mexico and Melody Mourer of New Mexico; grandchildren, Joshua (Lori) Mourer, Jessica (Jim) Haremza, Isaac (Kim) Jones and Sam Jones; great grandchildren, Bailey, Lilly, Trajan, Maggie, Hadyn and Genna; and great-great grandchildren, Sylas and Trinity, and many loved nieces and nephews. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Debra Jo; and granddaughters, Trinity Grace and Becky Jones; and 4 siblings, Herb Attenberger, Wiff Attenberger, Bea Robotham and Wilma Hartman. Tom was born on April 24, 1944 in Detroit to the late Ottis Helmer and Marjorie Marilyn (MaLaughlin) Streling. Tom graduated from Flat Rock High School and then enlisted in the United States Airforce. He served honorably from 1962 to 1966, spending most of his time in Elmendorf, Alaska. On June 7, 1980, Tom married Karol Anne Cavanary in Garden City. Following his time in the service he worked in the world of finance which led him to a career in vacuum sales. He was an incredible sales man who also had a knack for fixing and refurbishing machines. This led him to owning and operating his three stores in Ionia, Greenville and Charlotte. He could fix any make and model and his machines were always immaculate. A lifelong dream to move up north to Traverse City finally came true in 1993, when he found property on Union street. Here he owned and operated Grand Traverse Vacuum and Streling Antiques. Antiques became his passion, and soon he was renowned for his work with antiques. He and Karol made an incredible team and traveled all over the country participating in antique trade shows. He was an incredible man who enjoyed working hard and always showed up early for everything. He loved his Dodge Dually and was a master at packing it full to the brim. He enjoyed long distance driving and was a master at navigation. When he wasn’t restoring antiques he enjoyed reading and was quite knowledgeable about all things civil war related. He was respectful to all, kind and genuine. He will be so dearly missed. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, sister Katherine Carroll, sister Betty Ferkovich, brother Ottis Streling, and his son Tommy and wife Kathy in 1979. Tom is survived by his best friend, partner and wife of 42 years, Karol; his sisters Karen Caughey and Nancy Tobias both of Nevada; and many other extended family members and friends. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal services. Memorial contributions in his honor may be directed to American Cancer Society, Cherryland Humane Society or the a charity of one’s choice. The Value of Hard Work By Gina Johnsen
It’s amazing how much of our lives is spent dreading going to work, complaining about work, planning or counting down the days to retirement, and finding ways to get around going to work. Is the goal just to achieve enough funds to pay bills? If so, then why are we trying to live “without having to work”? The value of a “work” ethic is something we don’t talk about much today. And the shutdowns have encouraged a mindset that furthers this misunderstanding. At the same time that the federal government is trying to get us used to their financial hand-outs instead of working for a living, we are losing a labor force that used to be the shining example to the world of our productive “consumer-driven” society. In Michigan, over the past 2 years of government shutdown, we have lost over 23,000 businesses, and will suffer at least double that in population decline. Businesses close early these days because they can’t find enough workers to sustain normal business hours. Do you find yourself wondering how folks can suddenly survive without working? The rest of us have to pay bills just the same as before the shutdown. If we go back to the beginning of humanity, work existed before The Fall. It actually was a gift, a blessing. It was an opportunity to see how God designed each person, how His genius or creativity could be expressed through one’s own hands, mind, and body. There is dignity in expressing one’s self through what one could produce, serve, create, change, repair, or improve. There is a sense of accomplishment and a tremendous value in connecting others. We were made to
be interdependent with each other to produce and contribute to the world around us. We have overlooked this in the past years, as the Marxist idea of “all equal” has been promoted to our youth, for 2 generations now. We have crushed their ambition and allowed our children to be brought up in an attitude that says that no matter the degree of hard work, genius contribution, or sacrifice, all should receive the same paycheck, housing, education, and trophies. At the same time, demoralizing situations, stressful workloads, and the lack of purposedriven lives have overtaken the passion to enjoy the journey of working. Instead, this generation is fueled by an entertainment driven life not knowing that the end result is actually socialism, squashing independence, autonomy, and the incentive to thrive. Let’s restore the work ethic in our culture. Let’s appreciate the locally grown or made product, the hands that worked to bring it to market, and the fact that we get to do work and share our talents with each other. Let’s appreciate each other again and value our differences, trying not to be the same as everyone else. Let us value the work of our hands. After all, our Founding Fathers wrote in the Declaration of Independence that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Let’s enjoy the pursuit as well as life itself. Let’s ensure we have the liberties we need to fulfill our dreams for ourselves and our families’ future. Tell me what you think. A Dog Saved My Life By Gina Johnsen Today I met a woman who shared from her guts the deep concern she has for our state and nation. She can’t believe the sharp contrast between what we used to be and what we are now. She was angry about being put off when expressing concern to government officials. She couldn’t believe how her country and community had changed over the past couple years, and she fears for our future. She was truly grateful to have someone to listen to her. And I was honored that she would trust me enough to share all these thoughts and feelings. Through tears, she reviewed how tough the shutdown was for her, and how glad she was for the dog she rescued only 2 days before the shutdown began, March 2020. She said, “This dog saved my life.” Otherwise, she would have been devastated by being all alone for many months. There are so many folks who experienced extreme loneliness because of the government shutdown. I remember how a couple friends became trapped in isolation in nursing homes, retirement centers, and assisted living facilities. Their heartache for social contact with family and friends was not like anything they had ever experienced before in their lives. Others actually died at home from loneliness. One pastor remarked that although he had an older population in his church, no one died from Covid there. However, four people died of loneliness. They just quit caring. They quit eating…and died. They said that if they couldn’t see their families or friends, there was no point in living.
Prior to the shutdown in 2020, our culture was already experiencing a problem with loneliness. Our youth were better at social media and video games than actually being social. They lacked skills to make friends in person. They lacked passion for relationships and making commitments to each other. Their depression, anxiety, and suicide rates were the highest this nation has ever seen. Their sense of self-worth and respect for the world around them were, at best, underdeveloped. So how do we get our sense of humanity back? I don’t have simple answers for this, but I do think we have the power to change it. Even though we have gained more money and technology, we have not gained more happiness. We can choose to put people first - our neighbors, friends, and family. We can prioritize the little things in life – like sharing a card game together, sharing stories, playing music together…. And making people the priority again. We certainly can’t legislate it, but we can encourage it. As I visit the folks in our communities, I’m truly reminded that nothing matters more than a person valuing another person. We must get back to these basic values of life. We are made to need each other’s company. We are made for community, for family, for gathering. Let’s work on this together. Let’s value “customer service” where taking care of the customer really is the goal.
