† KERR Rose Ann Kerr, 79, of Ionia, reunited with her loving husband in Heaven on Friday, July 12, 2024. She was born June 7, 1945, in Ionia, the daughter of Lucille (Donner) and Bud Montgomery. She was the baby sister of six children. Her siblings were very protective of her and they all remained very close throughout their lives. She was especially close to many nieces and nephews that she cared for in their younger years.
Rose met the love of her life, a military man with three young boys, in 1965. She described the moment as “love at first sight”. They married on April 17, 1965. They bought their first home on Johnson Street in 1966. She started an Adult Foster Care Home which gave her the ability to work from home while being able to care for her children. Along with Jimmy, Mike, and Allen, they welcomed Steven in 1966, Mary Ann in 1971, and Melissa in 1979. Rose operated her AFC home for over 45 years and was the recipient of the Governor Award in 2000. Rose was compassionate about helping people and her kindness and love shined through the many families she cared for over the years.
Rose was a fun person to be around and she enjoyed life. She loved to dress up for holidays and be a part of any time spent with her family. She enjoyed going to the casino and her trips to Las Vegas, Bingo, playing cards, going to yard sales, flea markets, shopping of any kind, camping, and the outdoors. She loved dancing and music, especially Elvis. Rose loved spending time with her sister and brother and the monthly cousin gatherings that would bring her back to her childhood. Rose was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was a positive role model and passionate about instilling family values and family traditions. She showed the women how to be strong and kind loving mothers and the men to be hard-working loving and loyal providers. She taught them all how to power shop, get the best deal, shop a clearance rack and save money. She was more than just a mother and grandma; she was a friend. Nothing gave her more joy than spoiling her family by cleaning their homes and toy rooms, mating their socks, giving special gifts, cooking for parties, and showing love. We will never forget her famous advice about the “Birds and the Bees” and the kids will always know to wear their hats, socks, and gloves. Rose leaves behind a legacy that cannot be matched. She loved with all her heart. She fostered a life of giving and loving. She was the first to volunteer to help and the last to quit. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Ionia Hospital. Anyone who met her quickly became family. She touched so many hearts by making her home open to anyone who needed a safe place to stay or a hot meal to enjoy. She adopted many of her children and grandchildren’s friends as her own. Many of these people still refer to her as mom and grandma today.
Despite her many hardships in life; a family house fire, a tragic car accident when she was just a teenager leaving her immobile for over a year, losing three sons, having to care for her husband who developed a brain injury and Parkinson’s Disease for over 21 years, and many serious health conditions of her own, she never complained and remained strong for her family and was a fighter to the end.
Preceding Rose in death are her husband James, her parents, sons James Jr., Michael and Allen, grandson, Steven Michael Jr., great-grandson, Ryder Vance, brothers, Bud and Bradley (Scotty) Montgomery, sisters, Esther Marie and Beverly Minaker, mother and father-in-law, Mary and Andrew Kerr, brother-in-law’s Raymond Kerr, Garland Morgan, and Casey Croff, sister-in-law, Alice Montgomery and nephew, Jimmy Montgomery.
Surviving are her children, Steven Kerr, Mary Ann (Michael) Owen, and Melissa (Steve) Barber. Grandchildren Michael Kerr, Christopher (Krista) Kerr, Courtney Vance, Dalton and Zackary Kerr, Matthew Denslow, Andrew (Karlee) and Maycee (Bryce) Ray, Steven, Makenzie and Carson Barber. Great grandchildren, Chloe, Remi, Brynlee, Siler, Barrett, James, Ellee and Greyson. Siblings, Barb (Maynard) Helmer, Barb Montgomery, and Billie Montgomery. In-laws, Barb Morgan, Andrew (Becky) Kerr, Carolyn Kerr, Valerie (Fred) Gave, David (Cindy) Kerr, Debbie Artis, Velma Croff, and her fur babies, Bear and Rosie.
Funeral Services officiated by Pastor Marilyn Danielson at Lehman Funeral Home on Friday, July 19th at 4pm. A gathering followed at the Ionia Moose. Feel free to wear purple in honor of Rose’s favorite color.
The family received friends and family on Thursday, July 18th from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm at Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St, Ionia, MI 48846. Online condolences may be made at lehmanfuneralhome.com.

Advanced Eyecare Professionals (AEP) is celebrating their 40th Anniversary of saving and improving vision locally! In July of 1984 ophthalmologist
Dr. Michael J. Flohr officially opened his practice, Thornapple Ophthalmology after being recruited by the Pennock Hospital Physician Recruitment Committee in Hastings, Michigan. The committee sought top ophthalmologist candidates to provide local ophthalmology care to the Barry County area so residents didn’t have to drive so far for care.
Dr. Flohr at the time had just completed his residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Maryland. Flohr said he was a newly trained ophthalmologist looking for work back in his home state of Wisconsin, but after being contacted by Pennock Hospital thought he should at least travel to Hastings to see what the area had to offer. Flohr was impressed with it. He said he loves the outdoors, and Hastings really spoke to that love. Dr. Flohr decided to move he and his young family to Hastings and open an ophthalmology practice there, a decision he said he’s never regretted.
AEP’s Hastings office is still located in its original spot in the professional building across from the Hospital (now the Corewell Health Pennock Hospital Care Center B building) and still offers complete full service eye care for all ages.
Over the years the practice has grown to service other communities' vision care needs as well, including full service offices in Lowell and Ionia. Since the office grew into other locations not by the Thornapple River which inspired the practice's original name Dr. Flohr decided to rename the practice Advanced Eyecare Professionals. After opening the second office in Lowell in April of 2002, Dr. Flohr was asked by Ionia County Memorial Hospital now Sparrow Ionia Hospital to start a specialty clinic to offer ophthalmology / cataract surgery locally in June of 2002.
The specialty clinic prospered so in July of 2006 Dr. Flohr opened a full service Advanced Eyecare Professionals office in downtown Ionia that later moved in July of 2012 to the state of the art Blue Water Medical building at 2001 E. Bluewater Hwy / Suite 100 in Ionia.
Dr. Flohr over the years has also built an eye care team of doctors that is as committed to eye care excellence as he is. Dr. David Harrell is the other ophthalmologist in the practice. Dr. Flohr and Dr. Harrell rotate between the locations to provide ophthalmology care more locally so that patients don’t have to drive as far to receive care. In addition to two ophthalmologists
AEP also has two optometrists, Dr. Brian Weller and Dr. Samuel McNeill.
All three Advanced Eyecare Professionals locations offer medical and routine eye care services, glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses for all ages.
In addition to those services in 2021 Dr. Flohr became trained

to perform retinal injections to provide a local option for patients needing specialized retinal injections for macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. Those services are offered at all three of the locations as well.
In addition to providing eye care in Hastings, Lowell, and Ionia, Flohr has been to Honduras and El Salvador on several mission trips with the Lions International to help with “medical management and doing cataract surgery.” Flohr said, “We do not live on an island, isolated and insulated from those around us. A doctor must give as well as receive. I am proud of the effort I have made to help my fellow man.” Dr. Flohr and his staff have also made other charitable contributions locally by having a special Community Eyecare program in each of their offices for the past 17 years. The program helps those in need who can not otherwise obtain adequate eye care locally within Barry, Ionia and Kent counties. Their Community Eyecare program has helped over 750 individuals receive a low cost/no cost eye exam and glasses.
Dr. Flohr said in closing, “I would like to personally thank all the patients, community members, associate businesses and hospitals that have helped Advanced Eyecare Professionals grow and prosper for the past 40 years!” With a smile Dr. Flohr also said “And for those wondering with this big milestone celebration, NO I do not plan to retire. I love what I do! The gift of sight is precious and helping people with their eye health and vision is something I enjoy. I do however take a little more time off to spend extra time with family and friends, so you may need to schedule further in advance if you want to see me personally, however AEP has a fantastic team of doctors that I trust and fully back to help with all your eye care needs. My wonderful team and I look forward to many more years of serving each community's vision care needs.”
As a thank you to the Hastings, Ionia and Lowell communities Advanced Eyecare Professionals is hosting a week long cookie treat in their waiting rooms the week of July 29th, 2024. Stop in anytime during normal office hours to enjoy a cookie. There will also be a card box for anyone wishing to leave Dr. Flohr and/ or AEP a note.

Are you ready to dig into a bowl of delicious blueberries? Perhaps you’re adding a handful to your morning smoothie? Regularly eating blueberries is not only tasty, it can be excellent for your overall health.
While the term “superfood” has become controversial because it is now seen as a marketing ploy and there’s no standardized list of criteria to designate a food as “super,” blueberries have often been touted as especially nutritious. That’s because blueberries are not only low in calories, they’re full of nutrients the body needs to thrive.
Healthline indicates blueberries are among the most nutrient-dense berries. A cup contains only 85 calories, and in that serving a person can enjoy 3.6 grams of fiber, 16 percent of the daily value (DV) of vitamin C; 24 percent of the DV of vitamin K; and 22 percent of the DV of manganese.
One of the main benefits of blueberries is that they are rich in antioxidants. Produced as a natural result of metabolism or exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke and alcohol, free radicals are molecules that damage cells over time. Antioxidants create barriers around cells to help protect them from damage by free radicals.
The Cleveland Clinic says that the high soluble fiber content of blueberries can make them strong allies in the fight against cholesterol. Soluble fiber
binds to bile in the gut. Bile is made of cholesterol and other substances that need to be removed from the body. Lowering cholesterol helps prevent or reduce risk of heart disease. In relation to heart health, blueberries also may help reduce blood pressure, which can be beneficial for the heart and brain. Healthline reports that in an eight-week study, people with obesity who had high risk of heart disease noted a 4 to 6 percent reduction in blood pressure after consuming two ounces of freeze-dried blueberries per day. Additional studies have uncovered similar blood pressure-lowering abilities of blueberries.
Individuals concerned with keeping their brains sharp may want to consider adding blueberries to the mix of foods they eat regularly. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition uncovered cognitive function improved when participants ate about 3⁄4 cup of blueberries per day. Since blueberries lower blood pressure, more blood can flow to the brain, which improves cognitive function.
BBC Good Food says blueberries also are low in sugar and high in fiber, which gives them a low glycemic index. This means blueberries can potentially control blood sugar levels.
Blueberries are powerhouses of nutrition and people of all ages can benefit from consuming them regularly. TF247127

The Saranac Trailhead Social District will allow patrons aged 21 and over to purchase alcoholic beverages from participating establishments (Social House and The American Legion) and enjoy them within designated outdoor areas. This initiative is designed to create a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere where residents and visitors can gather, socialize, and explore the unique offerings downtown Saranac

"We are thrilled to provide a space where people can come together in a fun and relaxing environment all while supporting our fantastic local businesses." said Sharon Darby, Saranac Village President.
The Social District will operate from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Monday through Friday, Saturday Noon to 10:00 PM, and Sundays Noon to 8:00 PM.
