Mosquito Activity and Mosquito-borne Illness With mosquito activity on the rise, it is time for refresher on avoiding mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illness. Primary among these illnesses in Michigan are West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). Most people bitten by a WNV-infected mosquito show no symptoms of illness. However, some people develop mild flu-like symptoms which generally last a few days. These symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, and/or a body rash. An estimated 1 in 150 people infected with WNV will progress to a more severe infection. People 50 and older are more susceptible to severe WNV disease symptoms. Eastern Equine Encephalitis is a rare illness in humans. Most persons infected with EEE have no apparent illness. Severe cases of EEE (involving encephalitis, an inflammation of the brain) begin with the sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills, and vomiting. The illness may then progress into disorientation, seizures, or coma. Michigan residents should take the following precautions to avoid mosquito bites throughout the spring, summer, and fall months: 1) Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes out of buildings. 2) Empty water from mosquito
breeding sites such as buckets, unused kiddie pools, and old tires. Anything that holds standing water should be emptied if possible – some mosquito species can breed in a bottle cap full of water! 3) Apply an insect repellent that contains the active ingredient DEET (or other EPA approved repellent) to exposed skin or clothing - particularly during peak mosquito activity periods such as dusk and dawn. 4) If possible, stay indoors at dusk and dawn. 5) Wear light colored, longsleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. † MICK Ronald Alton Mick, age 75, of Sand Lake passed away July 20, 2021.
He was born on June 9, 1946 to Alton and Phyllis (Yeiter) Mick. Ron was raised on the family farm north of Clarksville and graduated from Saranac Community Schools, class of 1964. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division. During his tour of duty in Vietnam, Ron was the recipient of the Bronze Star for gallantry in action. Ron was an extremely loyal supporter of veteran’s groups and a huge fan of the University of Michigan football program. Ron was preceded in death by his parents Alton and Phyllis and his sister Joan (Mick) Bowen. Surviving are his brothers Steve (Barb) Mick of Nevada, Philip Mick of Grand Rapids and brother-in-law Dennis G. Bowen (Nanci L. Zeran) of Saranac. Ron had a special place in his heart for all of his nieces and nephews Steven (Kate) Mick, Tami (Steve) Reeves, Dennis A. (Dianna) Bowen, Lisa (Tim) Sitzer, Alton (Jennifer) Mick and great niece and nephews Eden Bowen, Alec Sitzer and Steven Reeves. Ron enjoyed his home on the lake and all his friends and neighbors in the area. The family would like to voice a special thanks to Jeff and Mimi Webster, the staffs of Spectrum Health Palliative Care and Spectrum Health Hospice and those who cared for Ron at Mission Point. You are all very special people and we greatly appreciate all you did for Ron. Funeral services for Ron are scheduled for Tuesday, July 27th at 11:00 a.m. at the Roth Gerst funeral home in Lowell. Visitation will be on Monday, July 26th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM. Internment will be in the Saranac Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the charity of your choice, in Ron’s name.

$13.99 † HEYBOER LAKE ODESSA — Alyce Banker Heyboer, who touched hundreds of lives as a VALUE schoolteacher in Western Michigan, died July 21, 2021 at Green Acres Lowell. She was 94 and had been in declining health since late last year. COUPON IS GOOD Although she lived some 60 years on a farm outside Lake Odessa, Mrs. Heyboer was adventurous, JULY 28 curious and engaged in the larger world. She was born on Nov. 24, 1926, to Wesleyan Methodist missionaries near Bombay, India. Educated at a boarding school in the Himalayas, she crossed the Pacific on a troop ship during World War II as she headed to the U.S. for college. Mrs. Heyboer graduated from Houghton College in upstate New York in 1945 and later earned her master’s at Michigan State University. She married a Grand Rapids Dutchman, Alvin L. Heyboer, in A WION 92.7 SPECIAL 11:00 - 9:00 1951. They lived in Grandville before moving several years later to the farm outside Lake Odessa. Mrs. Heyboer was a first-grade teacher in the Lakewood school system for 32 years. She was an extraordinary teacher who created special traditions such as taking kids to the Dairy Queen on their birthdays. † NORDHOF Tara Jean Nordhof 39 of Ionia, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday June 15, 2021. She was born in Greenville on July 13, 1982. The beloved daughter of Mark and Brenda Tomkinson. She married the love of her life Jim on august 11, 2007. Her life revolved around her husband and children. She captured and lived life to its fullest with shopping, concerts, vacations, movies, and spending time with her children, family and friends. Tara was loving, caring, and had a smile that could light up a room. She achieved her Master’s degree as a reading specialist from GVSU. She enjoyed teaching in the Greenville area for the last 16 years. She will be terribly missed by her devoted husband Jim, and beloved children Evan and Lilly. Her memory will continue to live on through them and by her loving parents Mark and Brenda, brother Brett (Kenzie) Tomkinson, Mother and Father-in-law Don and Mary Shattuck, Brothers in law Dan (Danette) Nordhof, Bill (Danielle) Nordhof, step siblings Donald (Jayme) Shattuck and Amanda (Aaron) Wolf along with several loved nieces and nephews. Sue and Gary were married on June 10, 1961 and raised their 5 children in Ionia. Rep. Calley’s plan to protect Michigan kids from cannabis products signed into law products to mimic the effects of marijuana. Without any regulations, kids could purchase delta-8 products to get high. “If our kids can walk to the corner store and purchase untested THC products that get them high, it gives them the false sense of security that delta-8 is safe for them to consume – and that’s not necessarily the case right now,” said Calley, of Portland. “Putting age limits and other reasonable policies in place will protect the
public from untested products and ensure that all THC products sold in Michigan adhere to the same testing and safety standards as those sold in the legal marijuana market.” House Bills 4517 and 4740-46 update the definition of industrial hemp in Michigan’s marijuana laws to include all THC – not just THC that derives from delta-9. This will subject delta-8 products to all the same rules and regulations as other products that contain 0.3 percent THC.
