† THELEN
Mary Ann was born August 3, 1930 to Oscar and Cornelia Fox in Pewamo, MI. She had fond memories of her years on the farm in Pewamo, especially her lambs named Jo-Jo and Snowball. Her family moved to Portland when she was 12. She attended Portland High School, where she participated in marching band, and graduated in 1948.
Mary Ann married Donald H. Thelen on August 3, 1949 at St. Patrick’s church in Portland. They were married for 58 years, until Donald’s passing in 2008. She was a devout Catholic and a dedicated member of St Patrick’s church, where she also served on the Altar Society for many years.
Mary Ann was a proud mother and homemaker for her 6 children: Pat (Louis-deceased) Koenigsknecht, Tom (Karen) Thelen, Denise (Jim) Anderton, Mary (Don-deceased) Anderson, Joe Thelen, and John (Lisa) Thelen
Mary Ann was a beloved grandmother to 10 grandchildren. She also had a way of adopting other grands as hers grew up. She was actually called “neighborhood grandma” by several children, including one named after her.
Mary Ann will be remembered for her kind, loving demeanor. One of her secrets was to always be ready to make French Toast for her “grands” whenever asked! Her famous apple sauce and full candy jars were also a hit with all of the kids. Her welcoming words when anyone arrived were “Hi – are you hungry?” Clearly – food was her “love language.” Mary Ann, in return, was much loved by all. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 4-7 p.m. with the rosary being prayed at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024 at the Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Mike Alber at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 13, 2024 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations should be directed to St. Patrick’s Parish in her honor. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.

In response to the question of how I voted on “abortion” since becoming a legislator, I feel the need to clarify the facts so everyone is clear – where I stand, how I voted, and what my views are on this topic. When opponents lie about the incumbent legislator they are running against, the truth must be told again. Here are the facts; not the hype, not vain rhetoric, and not lies.
I received the full exclusive endorsement of Right to Life of Michigan PAC (RTL). This endorsement is a SOLE endorsement by RTL. They did not endorse my opponent because he did not meet their criteria, established by RTL. It is their regular practice to send out candidate surveys and conduct interviews for all candidates in order to ensure the accuracy of their endorsements. And this is what they did all across Michigan and in this race. As well as conducting surveys and interviews, they also consider incumbents’ voting records and candidates’ personal and professional experiences in the pro-life arena.
The truth is that I voted NO on all abortion bills introduced in Michigan last year. I voted in alignment with my previous experiences and everything I have ever claimed. RTL endorsed me because I met their criteria and have been consistent to make every effort to protect and preserve life. Had I voted for abortion in any form since I was elected to office, they would have publicly rescinded their endorsement for me, as they have done in previous years when other legislators no longer upheld pro-life standards and no longer voted in accordance with them.
However, my opponent is saying that I voted FOR legalized abortion in Michigan. In response to not receiving this RTL endorsement, my opponent has manufactured false claims about me, about RTL, and about the integrity of their endorsement process. RTL has been endorsing (and not endorsing) candidates for over 40 years, and I have the utmost respect for their tireless efforts to protect life!
I would like my constituents to remember that it is factual PUBLIC RECORD that I have never supported abortion, and that I am yet the Executive Director of a Pro-Life pregnancy center in Eaton County where I revived it in 2020 after the previous Executive Director passed away. I have been a pro-life counselor intermittently for over 30 years, first trained in a pregnancy center located adjacent to the famous Harvard University where many young women came to discuss their difficult situations and life-altering decisions.
So, in this House District 78 race, which candidate can you trust to consistently tell you the truth – about herself/himself, about the realities in Michigan, about any topic that emerges in our community and state, and about actual problems with real solutions? I am the only one in this race that will tell you the truth!
If there are any questions about this or any other topic of interest, I hope you will contact me immediately. My personal cell phone number and email addresses are widely known and utilized, and that is what you hired me to do as your state representative. Please continue to use them when you need to know the truth or if you need assistance on any matter: 517-775-1637, gjohnsen@house. mi.gov or ginajohnsen@gmail.com. I will continue to do my best to help you, and I will always tell you the truth!

5 athletes to keep an eye on at this summer’s Olympic Games
Sports fans across the globe will be glued to their televisions this summer, when the historic city of Paris hosts the Olympic Games. Beginning with the Opening Ceremony on July 26, the 2024 Olympic Games is sure to feature awe-inspiring athletic accomplishments that mark the culmination of years of hard work on the part of competitors. Once the games commence, fans can keep an eye out for these five notable athletes who figure to put their stamp on this
summer’s competitions.
1. SIMONE BILES: Few athletes at this summer’s Games are as recognizable as American gymnast Simone Biles. Biles’s accomplishments are already too numerous to mention, but the 27-year-old can pad her legacy even further by earning just one more medal this summer in Paris. Should she accomplish that feat, Biles will have earned more Olympic medals than any American gymnast in the history of the Games.
2. DAIKI HASHIMOTO:
A two-time gold medal winner at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo (which were held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Hashimoto, who will turn 23 during this summer’s games, will be seen as the athlete to beat in men’s gymnastics. Hashimoto is a four-time world champion, and NBC Sports notes three of those titles were earned in 2023.
3. LEBRON JAMES: The National Basketball Association’s all-time leading scorer is no stranger to the Olympic Games, but the 39-year-old James has not played on the Olympic stage since 2012. Over the last several years, James made no secret of his desire to return to Olympic competition, suggesting this summer’s games will be the last time to see arguably the greatest player of all time compete at this level.
4. LÉON MARCHAND:
Born in Toulouse, France, in 2002, Marchand figures to be the center of attention this summer. Some suggest Marchand could put on a performance not unlike his fellow swimmer Michael Phelps’ efforts in the pool years ago, as the Frenchman is coached by Bob Bowman at Arizona
State University. Bowman famously coached Phelps during his time at the University of Michigan and beyond, and swimming fans will be curious to see how the hometown hero Marchand performs in the pools of Paris this summer.
5. SUMMER MCINTOSH: The pride of Canada made a name for herself at the tender age of 14 during the 2020 Games, where she was the youngest athlete named to the Canadian team. McIntosh finished fourth in the 400-meter freestyle in Tokyo, narrowly missing a medal in that event but still breaking the Canadian national record. Now a seasoned 17-year-old, McIntosh returns to the Olympic
stage this summer.
The Summer Olympics return this summer in Paris, and many talented,
exciting athletes figure to make this year’s competitions as exciting as ever. TF248198
