Surgical nurse receives Sparrow Ionia Hospital DAISY Award IONIA, MI – Sparrow Ionia Hospital has honored surgical nurse Justin Thomas with the DAISY Award in recognition of his patient-centered approach to care. The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary, compassionate and skillful care given by nurses every day. Thomas has been a fixture and leader in Sparrow Ionia’s Surgical Service Department, able to handle the daily responsibilities of the department while mentoring new caregivers. “Justin has dedicated his career to providing compassionate care for the Ionia community. He quietly works behind the scenes to accomplish great things and provide excellent care for all. Justin is well deserving of this recognition,” said Tara Lanz, Emergency Department manager. Thomas began working in patient registration at Sparrow Ionia in 2008, worked hard to go to nursing school and became a nurse in the Emergency Department in 2012. He joined the surgical staff in 2015. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is a national program created in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died in 1999 of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura, or ITP, at age 33. His family was overwhelmed by the skillful and compassionate nurses who cared for him, and the DAI-
SY Foundation and Award were created as an expression of their gratitude. Thomas received a certificate, a DAISY pin, a beautiful stone sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, handcarved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculpture depicts the embracing relationship nurses have with their patients.

† COGGAN Susan “Susie” Marie Coggan age 46 of Lyons
passed away July 7, 2021 in Ionia. Susie was the second daughter of Alan and Pamela Coggan. She has three siblings, Kimberly Kelsey of Issaquah, Washington, Jennifer Van Loan of Sunfield, Michigan and John Coggan of Hastings, Michigan. Susie is survived by her parents and siblings, as well as several aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins. She had physical limitations all of her life and was cared for and received services from a number of outstanding facilities. She received physical therapy from Ingham Medical Hospital as an older infant and Ionia County Community Mental Health as an adult. She attended Freedom Acres School until she graduated at the age of 26. They provided wonderful experiences in her life, including free rides at the Fair, swimming and horseback riding. We will always be grateful for this and for the wonderful people who assisted with these programs. After graduation, Susie continued to reside at home and enjoyed family life. She recently resided at New Hope of Lake Odessa where she was loved and received excellent care. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Father Tom Brown officiating. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service at the church. 2021 when Shirley (Fuller) Hummel decided to enjoy an endless † YOUNGS Ultimate Feast in the sky and died peacefully in Charlotte, Michigan. Willard A. Youngs, age 88, of Shirley - also known as “Gram” by her granddaughters and “Great Shirley” by her great grandchildren - lived most of her life in Ionia, Belding, passed away Saturday, Michigan and forged an 86-year trail of feisty stubbornness, laughter, July 3, 2021. and deep love for her family. She will be sorely missed by her children Rob (Carolyn), Barbara (Rick), and David (LuAnn); her grandchildren Missy (Tim), Jamie (Tom), and Gabby; and great-grandchildren Audra, Finn, and Harper. Shirley also leaves behind dear siblings Barton Fuller and Dick Fuller, and special daughter-in-law Loretta Temple. After retiring from American Bumper in Ionia, Shirley basked in the glory of her post-work years fueled by coffee, cigarettes, Pepsi, and all of the sweet treats. She loved crossword puzzles, gambling at the casino, scratch-off tickets, butterflies, and watching tv at a ridiculously loud volume. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Leroy and Dorothy Fuller, siblings Jack Fuller, Rodrick Fuller, Ilene Hartman, and Marilyn Markle; first husband and father of her children, Robert Temple; beloved selectively-hard-of-hearing husband, Merlin “Buck” Hummel, and sweet puppers Buffy and Buster. † JORGENSEN Scott William Jorgensen, 47, of Portland, Michigan, passed away on June 22, 2021. He was born January 27, 1974 in Ionia, Michigan, son of James Scott and Judith Soules. Scott had earned an associate’s degree in HVAC from Lansing Community College; he also worked on the production line for Peckham. Scott enjoyed camping; listening to music; concerts such as Def Leppard; traveling to Nashville, Tennessee; attending and watching all sports, and was an avid MSU and Grand Ledge comets fan. Scott is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years Marcie; daughter Tennille Jorgensen; son Peyton Jorgensen; 7 siblings: Terri (Frank) Welch, Donald Alexander, April (Mike) Warpup, Michael (Alicia) Jorgensen, Michelle Petrovics, Marcelle Thompson, Cindy Jorgensen; stepfather John Jorgensen; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his Golden Doodles: Scarlett, Parker, and Olive. A memorial will be held on July 17th in Portland, MI at the Community Park from 4pm-6pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Scott Jorgensen to his Go Fund Me page called Scott Jorgensen’s Cremation and Memorial.

MSU Extension helps people improve their lives by bringing the vast knowledge sources of Michigan State University directly to individuals, communities and businesses. Partnering with the Ionia County Commissioners we are still providing those services, but at a new location. We are currently open for business at our new location at 101 W Main
Street, 2nd Floor in downtown Ionia. Our new location will provide the same services for the residents of Ionia that you have come to expect. Ionia MSU Extension programs create innovative opportunities for Michigan residents. Here are some brief reminders of the services offered to Ionia County residents:

4-H Youth Programs (ages 5-19): Ionia County 4-H is a great program to gain skills such as responsibility, leadership and organization. There are a variety of clubs offered, specializing in everything from crafts to foods and animals to global cultural education and more. 4-H also offers opportunities such as Exploration Days (aged 13-19 taking educational classes for 3 days on campus in the summer); 4-H Bake Off, 4-H Animal Science programs; access to online programming such as Farm Homegrown Gardening; Livestock Judging Contests, Cooking and more. Health & Nutrition Programs: We offer educational presentations and hands-on classes to limited resource families, individuals and classrooms promoting healthy food choices, menu planning, cooking skills, smart shopping and healthy snacks. This program focuses on food safety measures in the field and at harvest, learning proper food preparation &
food preservation techniques to strengthen access to healthy food supplies. As part of this program, we also will check your pressure canner to make sure it is viable to use for your canning needs. We have bulletins and literature on health & nutrition available for your review. Contact Tammy Fletcher, Community Nutrition Instructor for more information. Livestock/Beef Programs: Farm visits, office and phone consultations plus a variety of programs are offered to beef/ livestock farmers to review issues producers face in the industry. Offering advice on beef cow-calf and feedlot systems, bull evaluation at Breeding Soundness Clinics, Beef Quality Assurance Workshops and Ultrasound Scanning programs. We can also help you with livestock scales for rent for your beef cattle needs. Call the office and ask for Kevin Gould, MSU Livestock Specialist. CWD (Chronic Waste Disease) Education: Since discovered in Michigan in 2015, Michigan State University AgBioResearch scientists and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources have been working on a plan to identify areas of the state that are at high risk for CWD based on deer behavior. Ionia MSU Extension office is pleased to offer the citizens of Ionia the data to help manage this disease. Contact Katie Ockert at 616-527-8219 to answer any questions or see the progress being made on this disease. Housing Division: For years, MSU Extension has offered programs for your Money health and Home Education. Contact Brenda Long, Certified Finance and Homeownership Specialist, for more information about the programs offered including: •Homeownership Education & Housing Counseling: Make informed choices about the true costs of home ownership. Course completion can help you qualify for down-payments and other assistance programs. This course is also a great way to find out the pros and cons of owning your own home. •Money Management Programs: Learn about common money struggles and best practices for creating & managing a spending plan, credit and debit management. •Foreclosure and Post-Foreclosure: One on one mortgage or property tax foreclosure prevention services with Brenda who is a certified housing counselor. Along with resources to help homeowners who have experienced foreclosure. Home Horticulture: Services in our office like soil sampling for your home garden or commercial fields or help with your lawn, flowers, or vegetable gardens can be accessed through our local office. Do you have an insect or problem in your yard that you need identified? If you need guidance with home horticulture issues you can start with our office manager and Extension Master Gardener Janice Ransom. If Janice cannot help you, she will connect you with our MSU Extension horticultural educator team.
