Area You Deaths See Us Before Buy † COOPER Michael Lose! Lee Cooper, age 71, WeawayBoth † DOBIES Eugene (Gene) D. Dobies, ageor 79, passed of Muir, passed away Saturday,

on July 3, 2020 after a long illness. He was born on December 31, 1940 in Detroit, MIFree to Fred Same and Jean Dobies. He is survived by Lin, his wife of 43 years; daughters, Tracy (Chad) Dickinson and Tricia (Greg) Chismar; stepson, Brent (Deb) Radhs; grandchildren, Matthew and Abigail; his sister, Louise Wroblewski and her children Kim, Jason and James as well as their families. Everyone who knew Gene appreciated his big heart and generous spirit. Whether sharing his favorite Polish food or his latest jokes, he endeared himself to all. He was so proud of his grandchildren and wanted to instill in them the empathy and compassion he had for others. For some 50 years those qualities were also clearly evident as he shared comforting Bible truths with others as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. His family and friends will treasure his legacy of love and laughter. A Zoom funeral service will be held at a later date.

Wanda Faye Miller went to join the Lord on July 4th, 2020. She was born in Duquoin, IL on December 13th, 1931 to Bersha and Arthur Scarber. As a young girl, Wanda moved with her family in search of farm work, where she met the love of her life, Everett Harris. Both Wanda and Everett knew they would marry each other the first time they saw each other, and they did, in 1960. They had one daughter together, Roxann, and spent the next 22 years happily married until his passing in 1982. Wanda had a fulfilling career as a nurse’s aide in Belding, MI. She was known for her caring demeanor, compassion for others, and willingness to help those in need - traits treasured by her patients and family. She spent her retirement with her late husband Glen Miller, who proceeded her in death in 2018. They enjoyed a nearly 20-year long marriage living in Lake Odessa near their family. One of Wanda’s greatest pleasures was watching her four grandchildren grow and seeing her six great-grandchildren. Wanda will be remembered by her grandchildren for the time she spent with them making cookies, paper dolls, and spending endless hours entertaining them. Wanda was an avid reader, starting with a newspaper in the morning and ending the day with a book, but she also enjoyed watching westerns, completing word searches, and spending time with her beloved dog and her family. Wanda will be remembered by her daughter Roxann (Mike) Shepard; and her grandchildren Britney (Jarrod) Becht, Cody (Krystin) Orszula, Lacee Shepard, and Hailee Shepard. Wanda had a smile that would light up the room, and her kindness ensured she never met a stranger. She will be missed by her family, by her friends, and by everyone who was lucky enough to know her. A Funeral Service was held at 11 AM Thursday, July 9, 2020 at Living Gospel Church in Lake Odessa with visitation one hour prior to the service, (10AM-11AM). Joann had a passion for softball and played until the age of 40 while also continuing to coach girls’ youth softball for many years thereafter. Her many selfless acts of kindness and dedication will never be forgotten by all those whom she touched. Way back in March, before the library closed, we created what we called “Quarantine Survival Kits” to help keep everyone occupied during the stay-at-home order. Designed to contain only items that could be easily and thoroughly cleaned or that would be used up by patrons, they were a virus-free way to occupy your family’s time. Each kit contained a variety of art supplies, coloring sheets, Lego sets, books, activities, and more. We know that, even though the quarantine is over, you may still be struggling with boredom and a lack of things to do. You spent three months with your stuff, and you want something new! So we have freshened up these kits, renamed them “Pandemic Packs” and are ready to circulate them. Pick one that suits your interests and age level and let the fun begin! CHILDREN’S AND TEEN “Imagine Your Story” at the Portland District Library with this year’s Summer Reading Program. This year will look a bit different, but we hope that everyone in your family will have something to enjoy! The reading program will be available for all ages including the Littles (0-5), Middles (6-12), Teens (13-18), and Adults (18+). Registration for the reading program will begin on Monday, July 20th. Programming is going virtual this summer, so we are going to be launching a Youtube channel with all sorts of content available. A few programs that are already in the works include Busy Bees and Book Cubs Storytime and our ever popular STEM Club. Carol Hoppes retires from Mercantile Bank after nearly 44 years An extraordinary community banker recently retired quietly after a career that spanned 43 years, 10 months to fulfill her next mission, which is to be an extraordinary full-time grandmother. Little did Carol Hoppes dream that when she filled out a job application on August 11, 1976 and held a simple phone interview with ICNB Vice President Jerry Sydow that she would ease into a career at 302 W. Main Street that would span 4 decades. Equally quietly, Carol retired on June 12, 2020 from Mercantile Bank West Michigan, ending a work adventure that endeared her to her co-worker family, led her through numerous and varied positions, and earned her praises from supervisors and bank presidents alike. “I have worked for 3 great companies and I have been fortunate to be able to come to the same location every day. Banking has changed in many ways over the years, but one thing has stayed the same and that’s the family atmosphere that I have experienced and loved during my career.” Indeed, the Covid 19 situation was a factor in both Carol’s retirement and her quiet departure from Main Street Offices. Prior to Covid 19, Carol had contemplated retirement, but found herself melancholy at the thought of leaving her very special bank family. Forced to work from home during quarantine, away from daily interactions with close friends, Carol experienced more of life and decided it was time to join her husband, Randy in retirement and enjoy being a full time Mimi who can say YES whenever the grandkids ask to spend the night! Carol has served under Ionia County National Bank presidents Ron Story and Jim Fast; Firstbank West Michigan presidents Bill Benear and Clare Colwell; and most recently, Mercantile Bank West Michigan president Ray Reitsma. Through her distinguished career, Carol worked as bookkeeping clerk and supervisor, accounting clerk, compliance assistant, audit assistant, internal auditor and administrative assistant. She also held positions in Computer Operations, Loan Review, Human Resources, and Retail Loans. She earned a Certificate of Achievement from the National Bank of Detroit Audit School in 1985; a Certificate of Completion, Bank Auditors School, Robert M. Perry School of Banking, Central Michigan

In his letter accepting Carol’s retirement, Mr. Reitsma recognized Carol for her faithful service to Mercantile and the predecessor banks she served so well. “The fact that you capably filled these positions says a lot about the breadth of your skills and abilities. Thank you for bringing them to bear every day; your contributions are greatly appreciated.” “I loved my job and always wanted to go to work,” Carol noted. “There was hardly a day that I woke up and didn’t want to go to work.” That didn’t mean things were always easy. In an effort to add efficiency, Carol remembers weathering big changes in computer operations when ICNB decided to purchase equipment to process its own proof work. Remember Y2K? Carol and co-worker Chris Desgranges had a special job in the strategic plan – they personally counted by hand the $1 million the bank required for “cash on hand”, TWICE. Downturns in the economy and mergers brought staff reductions and consolidation of duties, requiring retraining and change of departments within the bank. Certainly Carol sees changes in technology as key. “When I graduated from Ionia High School in 1976, the two bank buildings on Main Street were iconic. Now people bank without brick and mortar.” Carol recalls how for years couriers physically transported checks to Grand Rapids for processing and it took 2-3 days for a check to clear. Today, checks deposited electronically are deposited to and cleared from accounts instantly.

Carol, of course, retires with great memories from the “community” side of her community bank service. Remember the ICNB Briefcase Brigade that participated in the parades for the Ionia Free Fair, Belding’s Labor Day and Saranac’s Festival. Carol marched as part of that team. Remember who’s recipe won Mercantile Bank the “best tasting chili dog” award in the 2010 Chili Dawg Challenge? Carol

Hoppes! Her reward was to prepare 30 pounds of chili sauce for the annual event downtown. Remember the effort to make Halloween special for bank customers to the point staff selected a theme and went full tilt to create amazing costumes! Remember the summer picnic/music on Main Street, with bank staff grilling hot dogs for hundreds who joined in for lunch. Carol was there representing the bank team. Carol also fondly remembers coordinating the final Classic Club trip to South Carolina, helping to prepare the bank’s float for annual Ionia Free Fair and Christmas

parades, and participating in Ionia County’s 24-Hour Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. Without much ado, Carol has slipped into the role of “Super Mimi” to her six grandchildren, ages 3 to 9 years. She and Randy, her husband of 42 years, will have more time to spend with the families of their daughter Stacey Hoppes-Smith, and two sons, Nicholas and Wesley as well as garden and enjoy their pool. Mr. Benear noted, “Carol was one of those rare individuals you might have the privilege of working with in your entire working career. I was so fortunate to have her as
