NEWS FROM THE DEPOT

Boston-Saranac Historical Society

WHAT IS BLACK AND WHITE and red (read) all over? A newspaper! I know, it is an old riddle but the history of newspapers is even older. They have existed in some form or other since Roman times. The first newspaper (59 BCE), Acta Diurna, or “daily doings”, is widely believed to have published chronicles of events, assemblies, births, deaths, and daily gossip. Sounds familiar, for the most part.

A. Potts became the owner, with William R. Payne, editor. His daughter, Lula E. Payne, assisted her father and after his death, became editor and remained editor throughout the Saranac Local’s existence.

continuing today with his son, John Brown.

HELP WANTED - Pet groomer. Must have two years of experience. Needed for part time or full time. Please call Particular Pets at 616-527-9337. Taking New Clients!

TICKETS!!!! We carry double roll raffle tickets for $9 + tax per roll at The Shoppers Guide. Also available: Custom printed tickets! Call for a quote. 616-642-9411. 13 N. Bridge Street, Saranac.

In Saranac, the first paper was the Grand River Valley Standard, which was published by N.T. Kinsey as a Democrat journal. After about six months its name changed to The Standard and a year later (1874) the paper was transferred to the town of Ionia where it was published for several years before it was purchased by the Ionia Sentinel, and became the Ionia Sentinel-Standard. But that did not herald the end of newspaper publishing in Saranac. In fact, it was only the beginning.

1876 – C.H. Smith published the Reporter, neutral in politics but sided with Republicanism before folding.

1877 – Johnson and Buchanan started their independent journal, the Saranac Local 1879 – F.T. Stevenson became publisher and F.H. Spencer, editor. Some time later, George

Happy 75th Birthday Betty

I had 4 baseball diamonds in my backyard.

I was the bat girl for the Wolverine Baseball Team. I picked up the equipment, retrieved bats, and warmed up the pitcher when the catcher was not ready.

On Saturday mornings, I would run to the major league diamond and chase foul balls. When they finished practicing, Mr. Skelding would let me pitch for a few minutes.

I got to play one inning on the major league diamond. Dr. Graham’s player was late. He asked my dad if I woulld fill in for him.

Most of my playing was done on the side yard between my house and the Ionia Township Hall. We used the hall for a backstop. My dad would pitch to 3 batters, and I would pitch to 3 batters (pretend batters).

We played a lot of football in the Fall.

On the other side of our house there was a one stall garage. Dad put a berry box up for a rim. The basketball was usually flat, but we played anyway.

There were little sports for girls all through my school years.

My senior year, a friend and I asked Superintendent Robert Boyce if we could play basketball. He said, “There is no place or time for you girls to play.”

After High School, I played a lot of slow pitch softball.

About 2 years after graduation, I was asked by Linda Yearby to play basketball for the Texas Cowgirls. They played all over the US and even Europe. As much as I love basketball, I declined.

Vince Nevins once said to me “ You are the best girl athlete to come out of this school, and you never played.” He will never know how much that meant to me.

When I watch how great these women athletes have become, it does not surprise me.

All they needed was a place and time.

1894 – Hiram T. Johnson started a republican news sheet, The Advertiser. Mr. Johnson was so strongly political in his editorials; his paper was often referred to as the “Republican Mouthpiece” of Ionia County. As the paper grew, more working space was required and the double store building at the corner of Bridge and Division streets was purchased. His son, Norton S. Johnson, carried on the publishing business until 1937.

1937 – Floyd A. Gibson took over The Advertiser as editor, and along with the business manager, K.L. Gibson, was responsible for publishing the “Saranac History and Directory (1941)”

1949 – Emerson McCarty purchased The Advertiser, making him at that time the youngest newspaper editor in Michigan.

Mid-1950’s – The Advertiser was sold, and the new editor was Russell Partridge, followed by the present owner’s family –starting with Dwight Brown, and

1960’s – Due to the changing newspaper industry, with many advertisers preferring a “bargain sheet” style of paper, the Advertiser Publishing Co. launched the Ionia County Shopper’s Guide, and in which you are presently reading a column about Saranac’s history.

In early 2024, the “Saranac-Clarksville District Library” donated to BSHS a framed copy of the Saranac Local’s front page of its first edition: Friday, October 19, 1877. It mentions Saranac had “…the unenviable reputation of being ‘a very bad market town,’ and truth compels us to say that this reputation was well deserved.” As well it shared how two locals were “…in town slightly embalanced (sic) by whiskey.” And possibly my favorite entertainment review ever, “…a new band in Belding, and after hearing them five minutes, the spectator feels like rushing forth and stabbing his mother-in-law and committing suicide with a glass of Greenville whiskey.” Just like in Roman times but with an 1877 twist and only found in your local paper. Follow us on Facebook ™ / Saranac Depot

and meet the candidates for Michigan House and the 2nd Congressional district! We should also have a representative from Elissa Slotkin's campaign. You never know who might be there!!
Story by: Betty (Bet) Lamphere.
Lula Payne, a former school teacher, was the last editor of the “Saranac Local” (first published October 1877)
