† MERKLINGER Harvey Kevin Merklinger age 61 of Lowell passed away June 27, 2021. He was born June 17, 1960 in Grand Rapids, Michigan the son of Harvey H. and Carolynn N. (Walker) Merklinger. Harvey married Dee August 16, 2003 in Lowell. He was a member of the Ionia Moose Lodge. Harvey loved the outdoors, hunting and tinkering in the garage. He had a great sense of humor and was loved by all. Surviving is his wife Dee Husted-Merklinger of Lowell; mother, Carolynn Merklinger of Rockford; step-children, Candace (Joey) Shattuck of Ionia and Michael (Melody) Husted of Ionia; grandchildren, Shelby (Jack Lilly) Meeuwsen of Mulliken and Dennis Husted of Ionia; special great grandson Owen Craig Lilly; siblings, Charmaine (Glenn) Beimers of Lowell, Lorraine (Jeff) Bailey of Lowell, Belinda (Don) Case of Howard City and Mylena (David) Rowe of Jenison; brothers-in-law, Michael (Danna) Fuller of Ionia and Joe Fuller of Grand Rapids; sister-in-law, Paula (Geno) Dugger of Georgia and several nieces and nephews. John served his county during the Korean War - 1950 to 1953. He and many others were captured late in November 1950. For the next 33 months John suffered and ultimately survived the grueling torture that the Chinese and North Koreans put upon him and the thousands of other POWs. Many died of dysentery, starvation and exposure. John talks of the ‘death march’ making the men walk for days without food or water. Eating snow was their way to stay hydrated. John, now 91 years young, lives in Lowell with his wife Lucille.

Summer Reading Program which will run until Friday, July 30th. Patrons can decide between using PDL’s virtual reading tracker, Beanstack, or picking up a traditional paper tracker at the library. Adults will get a prize for unlocking their first badge and then can enter to win one of 9 prize baskets at the end of the summer. Youth readers, ages 18 and under, will earn a prize for every badge they unlock and also earn an entry into one of the many grand prize packs for each age group: Littles (ages 0-5), Middles (ages 6-12), and Teens (ages 13-18). This all-ages, month-long program will have you searching the library for clues, unlocking suspect and witness interview videos, and collecting evidence. Patrons will have until July 29 to collect their evidence and take a guess at who is guilty and what their motive was. One lucky family will go home with a grand prize fit for the best sleuths!

Defers the due date of the SUMMER taxes without penalty or interest charges until February 15. (Must be received by February 14).
