† BURHANS Linda Kay Burhans, age 77, of Ionia, Michigan passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022. Linda was born September 26, 1944 to Eugene W and Jessie Patrick in Emmalena, KY. Linda was a spectacular cook specializing in Biscuits-n-Gravy, Goulash and French Toast to die for. She also enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for any occasion. Linda was an avid fan of Channel 3 news. Never missed an episode of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. She was a very outspoken person and you always knew where you stood with her, meaning she was stubborn to the core. Linda always put others first and trying to take care of her kids, grandchildren or great grandchildren. She will be missed by her children Vern (Cindy) Stalter, Terry (Tina) Stalter, Duane Stalter, Larry (Shannon) Stalter, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, siblings Dewey (Judy) Patrick and Dave

Patrick. Preceded in death by; her parents, siblings Jim, Danny, Ron, Wendy Patrick, Valerie Stephens and Dottie Pline. † HESS Chances are, many of you have heard the name, Dave Hess. Those who were lucky to have him as your principal, teacher, substitute, colleague, friend, or family member, likely have many memories of him. When Dave told a story, he included every descriptive detail. He did this to ensure that everyone understood not only the narrative he was sharing but to paint a clear picture of the setting. Dave’s stories were incomplete without vivid descriptions of the date, the day of the week, and even the weather on that day! Regardless of whether the memory he was sharing took place in 1952 or 2022, Dave would even note the color of his shirt and what he had for breakfast that day. Therefore, it is essential to include an illustrative description of who he was and the impact that he had on his family, friends, and community. Dave was born in Momence, Illinois to his parents Roy and Kathleen Hess on July 22, 1936. A few years later, his younger sister, Judy Hemphill, who still resides in their hometown, was born. Both Dave and his sister followed in their mother’s footsteps and became educators. Dave treasured his hometown of Momence. Illinois and constantly reminisced on the days he spent working at the local lumber company with his dad. Early in his childhood, he developed his admiration of sports and began his lifelong fascination and devotion to the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He attended many games at Wrigley Field and was beaming with joy when his Cubbies won the World Series in 2016. After high school, Dave attended Michigan State University and graduated with a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in education. When he moved away from East Lansing, Dave decided that Michigan would be his forever home. He began teaching in Battle Creek and started writing a sports column for the Battle Creek Enquirer. Later, he moved to Ionia and started his lengthy career in the Ionia Public School System as a teacher at Emerson Elementary, where he later became principal. In 1968, he accepted a position as the first principal of Boyce Elementary School. During this time, Dave was the acting principal at both Emerson and Boyce. He retired as principal in 1994; however, Dave’s former students continue to share recollections of him and thank him for caring about their education. Although Dave was retired, he could not stay out of the classroom and decided to become a substitute teacher. When Mr. Hess was the substitute teacher, the students knew that the day would be exciting, filled with tales from his childhood, his neverending knowledge of sports facts, and guest appearances of his Michigan State Fight Song singing Sparty doll. When Dave was their substitute, teachers knew that their lesson plans would likely be set aside and forgotten. Dave’s grandchildren took significant pride when informing their friends that their grandpa was Mr. Hess, the beloved substitute teacher. Not long after Dave moved to Ionia, he started working for the Ionia Free Fair Public Relations Department. For over 40 years, he would travel all over the state with the Free Fair Queen and Biffy, the fair mascot, to attend fairs and festivals to promote the upcoming fair festivities. He also planned the Ionia Free Fair parade for years, made countless phone calls, wrote numerous letters, and traveled near and far to network with marching bands, clowns, entertainers, and antique car collectors, all to ensure that the celebration would be packed with exciting attractions. Every year, he aspired to make the parade larger and better than the previous year. He enjoyed working for the fair and loved to talk about his time spent with entertainers backstage. Specifically, Dave’s standout recollections were drinking beers with Willie Nelson and visiting with friends under the grandstand. To honor Dave for his years of dedication, the Ionia Free Fair Association asked Dave to serve as the parade Grand Marshal. More recently, in July 2021, Dave and his family were honored as the Fair Family of the Year. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing Dave also was aware of his admiration for sports. Not only did he enjoy attending sporting events and watching games on TV, but he also spent decades as a broadcaster for Lakewood High School basketball and football games. Hundreds of his broadcasts were streamed on WBCH Radio in Hastings. In addition to his sports broadcasts, he also hosted a radio show on Ionia-area WION called Viewpointe. Dave was an engaged member of his community and spent his free time participating in various philanthropic organizations. He was a longtime member of the Ionia Area Jaycees and proudly served as president of the chapter. During his time in the Jaycees, he made lifelong friends and continued to fondly reflect on the good ole’ Jaycee days. Dave was also a proud supporter of the Boy Scouts of America. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, an award for registered adult leaders who have impacted the lives of youth through service given to the council. While Dave was proud of his numerous accomplishments during his long life, he took the most pride and joy in his family. When he married his wife, Patricia Gilner on December 10, 1965, their families also united as one. Dave had a unique connection with each of his family members and valued every minute spent with them. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, son, Richie of Battle Creek, daughter, Kelly Arens and husband, Todd of Ionia, stepson, Mark Mojzak of Grand Haven, and stepdaughter, Susan Mojzak Knipper of Iowa. In addition, he was an incredible grandfather to Sydney Arens and fiance, Austin Carpenter of Colorado, Trevor and Tanner Arens of Ionia, Quint Mojzak, wife, Kelsey, and son, Jackson of Florida, and Corey, Emily and Beth Conner of Iowa. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Kathleen Hess, wife Pat, and brother-in-law Mike Hemphill. We invite the community to celebrate Dave’s life on Thursday, July 7th, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Lehman Funeral Home in Ionia. To commemorate his love of sports, we invite you to wear green and white or the colors of your favorite sports team. While maize and blue are not preferred, you are still welcome! In place of flowers, contributions in Dave’s honor can be made to the residential home where his son Richie has lived for almost 60 years: Kambly Living Center. † MEYERS George Dickinson Meyers age 78 of Ionia, MI passed away June 18, 2022. He was born on December 24, 1943 in Hastings, MI the son of August and Fern (Walker) Meyers. George graduated from Lakewood High School, class of 1962. He then married Carol O’Donnell on February 12, 1966 in Ionia. George worked as a postal carrier and clerk at the Ionia Post Office for many years. He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. George was a big fan of U of M and the New York Yankees; he enjoyed time with his family and playing games. He always had a positive outlook and had a great sense of humor. Surviving George is his wife of 56 years, Carol Meyers of Ionia; daughters, Missy Heckman of Ionia and Erin Meyers of Lansing; grandchildren, Alex (Natalie) Heckman of Fowler and Colton Heckman of Ionia along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. The former things have passed away.” † SHATTUCK Vernon Shattuck age 86 of Lyons passed away June 24, 2022. He was born November 7, 1935 in Orange township on Keefer Hwy, the son of Morris and Clara (Emelander) Shattuck. Vernon went on to marry Leota Guy at the age of 19 on August 6, 1955. He worked at Fisher Body for 16 years while working full time farming and also operating Lyons Stone and Gravel. Vernon and Leota raised 9 children together. He loved to go hunting up north at the Shattuck Cabin, and enjoyed camping and fishing from his childhood years until late in his life. Vernon liked mushroom hunting, going to the casino and playing Euchre at the senior citizens in Portland. Surviving Vernon are his wife of 66 years Leota Shattuck of Lyons. He was born on January 30, 1931 the oldest of four boys, to Robert G and Margarite (Bemis) White. Jerry graduated from Ionia High School with the Class of 1950, where he excelled in sports, especially football. He married his high school sweetheart, Joyce A Miller on August 14, 1950, she passed away March 9, 2016. Jerry retired from Chrysler, but also enjoyed his farm life. He enjoyed hunting, harness racing, casino trips with Joyce, watching sports, especially football and golf in his later years. He also enjoyed meeting with his breakfast group and his last few years at Valley View. His family was very important to him, as well as family reunions. Jerry is survived by his sons, Jerry (Danna) White of Cadillac and Patrick (Lorraine) White of Portland; grandchildren, Luke (Joy) White of Pentwater, Jeb White of Cadillac, Brad (Pauline) White of the Netherlands, and Sarah (Andrew) Ulfsax of Norton Shores; great grandchildren, Felica White and Keegan Ulfsax; brothers, Bob White of Ionia and Donald White of Greenville; brother-in-law, Rick (Pam) Miller of Ionia and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Margarite White; wife, Joyce White; brother, Gary and Virginia White; sisters-in-law, Dawn White and Shirley White. Tom worked at the Chrysler Trim Plant in Lyons and after it closed went on to work at Thornapple Valley Packaging. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and driving his Corvette enjoyed playing Pool in his younger years. Surviving Tom is his wife Clairalee Wilson of Ionia. Daughters; Theresa (Jeff) Porta of Ionia and Denise (Todd) Ward of Portland. 7 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Who decides the value of life? By Gina Johnsen

Over the past couple years with the controversial Covid culture, we have heard so many statements about how valuable life is and how careful we must be about preserving life. We were given new protocols regarding health. We were reminded to show compassion to everyone who might be at risk, and we were told to recognize and thank the healthcare heroes that were saving lives while risking theirs. We were told to lockdown and isolate to save lives. Life, Risk, Care, Health, Compassion, Shutdowns, Heroism, Safety, and Saving lives all became the buzz words of the day. This all took place while encouraging abortions that made several groups extremely wealthy. Planned Parenthood, a multi-billion dollar corporation, was open for business as usual during the Covid shutdown. The dichotomy was that in one building medical staff was trying to preserve life, and in the next building medical staff was profiting from ending life. How did we manage these opposing “values” in the same place, same brain, same conversation, and same society? I also don’t understand the supposed “empowering” messages women hear so often from abortion advocates: you CAN’T AFFORD a baby, you AREN’T CAPABLE of having a baby, you AREN’T SMART enough or STRONG enough or PREPARED enough to bring a human life into the world. If the abortionists are always trying to “empower” women, then why don’t they use words of possibility, capability, hope, and ‘can-do’ themes? This hypocrisy is extremely disturbing. Pro-abortionist group “Jane’s Revenge” has called for great violence against pregnancy centers across the nation, in anticipation of the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 abortion decision. In contrast, pregnancy centers are working hard to save moms and babies, with love, nurture, generosity, and kindness. Common sense would suggest that this prolife decision by the highest court in our land should be celebrated with great joy and thankfulness, not violence and hatred. When this Supreme Court decision becomes official, Michigan will regain its own voice – to preserve and defend life in the womb. We will be able to continue assisting moms (and dads) to do all they CAN to be the life-givers they CAN BE. They will be ABLE to support

life’s greatest resource: HUMAN LIFE. Michigan also needs to stand against the violent threat of “Jane’s Revenge”, and celebrate women’s abilities to have LIFE – for themselves and their babies. Thirty years ago, I was trained to be a lay counselor for a crisis pregnancy center. My goal was to help save babies, and try to make a small dent in the multi-billion dollar, life-ending abortion industry. Today, I am the volunteer Executive Director of a Crisis Pregnancy Center, and I am elated that we are finally at the point where we can preserve and defend life as a state. Michigan will now have the opportunity and responsibility to stand up for LIFE again, instead of funding an industry that only provides plans toward death, deception, and theft of our future generation. So, if we are honest as individuals and as a culture, would we say that every life HAS VALUE, and that EVERY LIFE is worth saving? Is it appropriate for us to say that as a government, as a society, as individuals we have made a big mistake by allowing the abortion industry to make billions of dollars from lying to women, placing their lives at great risk (cancer, infertility, mental and emotional health, and death), and killing over 60 million babies? Isn’t it time to admit we were wrong, forgive ourselves and each other, and receive forgiveness from God Himself? Isn’t it time to reject the business of abortion and accept our opportunities and responsibilities to raise the next generation toward its fullest potential? __________________________ Every time I speak or share on the topic of abortion, I have to give credence to the great guilt many women (and men) feel after having abortions. Everyone has sinned, and we all have regrets – some really big and some small – but we ALL wish we could do some things over again. No sin or regret is unforgivable. The saving forgiveness offered by Jesus Christ is truly enough to cover all our regret and shame. It is enough to make up for every abortion and every horrible decision we’ve made. VILLAGE MARKET of Muir Absentee ballots for August 2nd primary election now available Absentee ballots for the Tuesday, Aug. 2 statewide primary election are now available at local clerk offices and will soon be mailed to voters who have already applied to vote absentee. “Voters have numerous secure options for how to cast their ballots this August,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. “Whether they choose to vote from home, by mail, via secure drop box, in person by absentee ballot at their local clerk office, or at their polling location on Election Day, Michigan voters can be confident their vote will be counted and their voice will be heard.” Voters on the permanent absentee list have been mailed applications by their local clerk and some clerks may mail applications to all registered voters in their jurisdiction. Regardless of if they have received an application in the mail, voters can apply to vote absentee at Michigan.gov/ Vote. At the same site, voters who have already submitted their application can track that it has been received and track the mailing of their ballot. Voters on the permanent absentee application list will receive their application at the last address the clerk has on file. Political parties, candidates and partisan and nonpartisan organizations also frequently mail absentee applications directly to voters. Clerks only provide one absentee ballot to each

voter, and only after verifying the signature on the application matches the voter’s signature the clerk has on file. Voters who wish to request and submit their absentee ballot in person may now do so at their local city or township clerk offices. Voters can find their clerk’s office information at Michigan. gov/Vote. Absentee ballots are available at local clerk offices across Michigan, except for in Genesee County, where staff vacancies resulted in the county clerk’s office failing to prepare and print the ballots in time to have them in local clerk offices today. The county clerk’s office acknowledged they missed mandatory deadlines in an email sent yesterday to all city and township clerks in the county. The Michigan Bureau of Elections has directed the office to fill its vacant positions and make additional hires as necessary as soon as possible, and has urged the county administration to support such expedited hiring in order to prevent future violations of the state constitution that deny Genesee residents the ability to fully exercise their voting rights. The bureau also continues to support the staff currently working at the county clerk’s office.
